It has been said that the future will never be the same again, which is undoubtedly true, as is the statement that learning will never the same again. Many of the old rules of learning are being swept away and it is increasingly realised that knowledge of “fact” is less important than understanding of situations. It is now well established that understanding can be facilitated by simulation, which is one of the principles on which games-based learning is founded. Games-based learning is also important because there is so much pressure on the teaching resources available. Demand for learning has never been greater and it is likely to continue to grow exponentially. In this environment games-based learning has come into its own. It has always been true that there has been much to learn from games. Both competitiveness and team work have traditionally be learnt on the playing fields of schools around the world. Strategic thinking has been learnt from games such as Chess, even Checkers, and in a more sophisticated way the board game Diplomacy. With the power available through ICT entirely new games are possible that have a much richer and more engaging potential for learners. This is transforming learning and opening up new avenues for both learners and those who are helping them learn. This book represents some of the leading edge thinking in this field and is highly recommended to academics and training practitioners.

In this book we aim to discuss and reflect on how HEIs are coping with the demands placed on them and how the various dimensions of change are intertwined. In particular, we aim to discuss the following questions: How do governance regimes steer higher education institutions? This part of the book focuses its attention on how higher education and research institutions operate under different governance regimes at international, regional and national levels, and how that context shapes governance and management arrangements at institutional level. How are institutions managing their quality and performance? This part deals with the systems institutions are developing to manage their quality and their wider performance to cope with the internal and external forces pressing them to constantly improve their levels of quality and wider performance in teaching, research and third mission. How are higher education professionals responding to the transformations? This part is devoted to investigate the ways academic and non-academic professionals working in higher education and research institutions respond to the transformations occurring in their organisations, and changes in practices and functions performed by those working in higher education. It also explores the implication of higher education transformations on students.

Perspectives On Educational Quality written by Jaap Scheerens and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-29 with Education categories.

The quality of education is a term that is frequently used in public debates. Understood in the sense of education being “generally okay” , or rather, most frequently, as “not okay”. Perhaps there is an overruling nostalgic view that formerly education was better than today. In scholarly discourse there are those who maintain that the quality of education is an illusive term, with varying interpretations in different settings and by different stakeholders. In this book the complexity of the concept of education quality is recognized, but a conceptual framework is presented that makes quality, despite its complexity, amenable to rational and empirical analysis. Productivity, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and responsiveness of education systems are seen as key facets of quality. A concrete set of indicators is presented that makes for the measurement of these quality facets. In the second part of the book the quality framework is applied to an analysis of the quality of education in the Netherlands. Common sense in the Netherlands is dominated by the view that the quality of education is a course for serious concern. Some recent quality reviews take the same pessimistic outlook. However, the current overview of indicators on the Dutch system, seen from an international perspective, presents a picture that is much more positive. Still there is always room for improvement, in the case of the Netherlands this should probably be sought in diminishing the selectivity of the system as a way to improve participation in higher education.

School Size Effects Revisited written by Hans Luyten and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-26 with Education categories.

This book provides a thorough review of the research literature on the effect of school size in primary and secondary education on three types of outcomes: student achievement, non-cognitive outcomes and costs per student. Based on 84 scientific publications and several prior reviews, the book discusses four main areas: the impact of school size on cognitive learning outcomes and non-cognitive outcomes; the "state of the art" of empirical research on economies of size; the direct and indirect impact of school size, conditioned by other school context variables on student performance and the specific position of the Netherlands in an international perspective. The book presents summaries of the results and main conclusions found and discusses these with respect to their relevance for educational policy in general and for the Netherlands in particular. The book concludes with suggestions for future research on school size.
