Named one of "22 new books…that you should consider reading before the year is out" by Fortune "This practical and empathetic guide to taking the high road is worth a look for workers lost in conflict." — Publisher's Weekly A research-based, practical guide for how to handle difficult people at work. Work relationships can be hard. The stress of dealing with difficult people dampens our creativity and productivity, degrades our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions, and causes us to disengage. We might lie awake at night worrying, withdraw from work, or react in ways we later regret—rolling our eyes in a meeting, snapping at colleagues, or staying silent when we should speak up. Too often we grin and bear it as if we have no choice. Or throw up our hands because one-size-fits-all solutions haven't worked. But you can only endure so much thoughtless, irrational, or malicious behavior—there's your sanity to consider, and your career. In Getting Along, workplace expert and Harvard Business Review podcast host Amy Gallo identifies eight familiar types of difficult coworkers—the insecure boss, the passive-aggressive peer, the know-it-all, the biased coworker, and others—and provides strategies tailored to dealing constructively with each one. She also shares principles that will help you turn things around, no matter who you're at odds with. Taking the high road isn't easy, but Gallo offers a crucial perspective on how work relationships really matter, as well as the compassion, encouragement, and tools you need to prevail—on your terms. She answers questions such as: Why can't I stop thinking about that nasty email?! What's behind my problem colleague's behavior? How can I fix things if they won't cooperate? I've tried everything—what now? Full of relatable, sometimes cringe-worthy examples, the latest behavioral science research, and practical advice you can use right now, Getting Along is an indispensable guide to navigating your toughest relationships at work—and building interpersonal resilience in the process.

And now to a book that exhorts us to turn off our televisions ... Practical and witty, written with a light touch but always deeply felt, Janice Krasnow's remarkable little book lays out a series of specific steps to help readers make meaningful connections with other human beings. The book combines invaluable suggestions and insights ("give up the comparison mode for good"; "life is disturbing, and it should be") with a series of specific exercises that lead to genuine communication and interaction. These include temporary withdrawal from the media and a program to break through the conversational cliches that allow us to maintain a destructive distance. With a list of things not to say (from "You look good!" to "Take care of yourself!") to suggestions for getting along with people you know well (but ought to know better), this is a social survival guide for the 21st century.

It Did What? 37 Secrets about Getting Along With PeopleIn this book, I have detailed my perception of how to get along with almost anyone. Read along the practical thirty-seven secrets in order to get along with anyone and everyone. To get the best out of this book you need to implement the sentences written in bold letters and also carry out the activities detailed in the "Activities to build your muscle" section. Apart from that there is also a Summary section after every chapter and at the conclusion you have a sample plan suitable for one month.IntroductionMost people get along with others. We live in a civilized society where interpersonal relationships are important. There might be the odd bit of friction between a single person and two, but for the most part, most people get along.Remember the Golden Rule: As long as the other person feels significant, you can get along well with almost anyone. No one likes to feel insignificant. Several conflicts occur when the other person feels less important or is given no importance. Avoid those actions that make the person diminish or feel small. We need to do more and more of replacing these actions to build them up. There is a sub-group of people however, that do not seem to get along with almost anyone. These people tend to project blame onto others for their conflict and may also cause others to feel guilty for not meeting expectations in the relationship. Some people are loud or dramatic, others cause rifts in relationships, some may flaunt the law, believing it is their right to do so and others make everything seem resonating, harping and revolving only about them and around them. Mindfulness is the antidote to toxic people. Dealing with someone who rubs you the wrong way can have a negative effect on your own emotions. A toxic person can drive you crazy if you let them. Remember, only you have power over your emotional state. Do not allow a negative or a toxic person to influence your state of mind. That doesn't mean that you ignore the person or disregard how they make you feel. You first need to recognize that your emotions, such as irritation and annoyance, are scaling up. If someone is making you angry, you need to let yourself feel that emotion and then let those feelings dissipate. Sometimes all you need to do is smile and nod. There would be no need to engage in a worthless conversation. There are several behaviours that can break down relationships. Some of which are mentioned below: -Acting annoyed-Being disrespectful with your words or actions-Not paying attention to someone who is speaking to you-Raising your voice-Being unresponsive-Undermining other people-Speaking negatively of others-Unfairly criticizing the other person-Sabotaging someone's reputationChapter One: Secrets on Self1. Accept nobody likes everybody. The first step when dealing with a cantankerous individual is accepting that you are not going to get along with some people, and that's perfectly alright. Not liking them doesn't make you a bad person -- nor does it make the other person fundamentally awful. But, we all have to find a way to get along and work with each other. Acknowledging that you clash with someone, without judging who is right or wrong, can remove the strong emotions that often accompany difficult relationships. For example, there are complex people around us and there are those who for no reason seem to detest our openness to interact with them. We can approach them from our side, but also know that it is not necessary that the other person too accepts our friendship in the same level of openness. It isn't likely that everyone likes you; however, you need to feel at peace that it is quite normal. 2. Believe in the best. If you approach any relationship believing the two of you will strike up a close friendship, chances are good that you will.

How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.
