"This fully revised edition of Early Years Practice: Getting It Right from the Start integrates theory and practice and expands on the topics of early childhood practice as located within the context of international curriculum frameworks including Aistear, the Irish framework. With two new chapters it introduces readers to the complexities and possibilities of a play-based pedagogy and the importance of pedagogical leadership. Drawing on recent international scholarship the book pays particular attention to role of outdoor play and learning and the impact of digital technologies. It considers how best to manage the competing demands, challenges and tensions that affect the daily experiences of educators and children in contemporary society. This new edition also revises the original text with expanded references on topics such as the ecology of early childhood settings, education for sustainability, developmental psychology, education and neuroscience. This timely text also reviews international literature from both research and practice, strengthens understandings of the key role of relationships to quality practice and the effects on the development and learning of young children. All the chapters provide specific examples of good practice with strategies and suggestions aimed at enhancing the overall experience of early childhood settings for both educators and children. The information collected and explored in the book can be used by lecturers and educators alike to stimulate conversation, guide reflection and support the profession of early childhood educators to collectively work towards achieving, supporting and sustaining high quality early years practice that adds constructively the lives of babies and young children"--

Getting It Right is the story of Kara and Alex, half-sisters who have never met―one the product of an abusive foster-care setting, the other of dysfunctional privilege. Haunted by crippling memories, Kara falls for the wrong men, tries to help her foster-care siblings suffering from PTSD, and longs for the father and half-sister she only knows from a photograph. Alex, meanwhile, struggles to keep her younger sisters out of trouble, her mother sane, and her marketing business afloat. Now Alex has a new responsibility: from his hospital bed, her father tasks her with finding Kara, the mixed-race child he abandoned. Alex is stunned to learn of Kara's existence but reluctantly agrees. To make things more complicated, Kara loves a married man whom the FBI is pursuing for insider trading. When Alex eventually finds her half-sister, she becomes embroiled in Kara's dangers, which threaten to drag them both down. If Kara doesn't help the FBI, she could face prosecution and possible incarceration, and if Alex can't persuade Kara to meet their father, she will let him down during the final days of his life. Set in Harlem, the Bronx, and the wealthy community of Bedford, New York, during two weeks in March, Getting It Right explores grit and resilience, evolving definitions of race and family, and the ultimate power of redemption and forgiveness.

This is the second edition of a book about a little understood subject, the dramatic reform of the American military, and particularly the U.S. Army, between the end of the Vietnam war and the Persian Gulf war of 1990-91. The second edition material carries the study through the 1990s and a few years beyond. We cover a lot of subjects that few Americans are familiar with. The reforms after Vietnam were more driven by the results of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and paid for by defense spending increases begun by president Carter. The end of the Cold War ended up creating a need for more reforms.

From the author of Gillis Huckabee comes Sean Conway's powerful first collection of short stories. In storySouth Magazine's Million Writer's Award-nominated "Scratch," a divorced man tries to control a raging breakout of poison ivy while his personal life erupts violently out of control. In "Ashes, Ashes" an unemployed laborer is unable to look forward, so consumed by his role in devastating events of the past. And in "January Thaw" a single mother struggles to let go of the life she once envisioned for the uncharted path of her present when her recently-widowed father moves in with her and her young son. Despite its title, The Slowpoke's Guide to Getting It Right is not, in fact, a guide. It is not a how-to book. If anything, these stories combine to form a how-not-to guide. Sean Conway's characters distract themselves from facing truths; they blame others for their own tragic decisions; they find themselves suddenly unprepared, face-to-face with life situations that they should have seen coming a mile away, but, like many of us, missed. Like many of us-perhaps even all of us-they're slowpokes.

Getting It Right is the first "insider's" account of this period of regional development in Canada. Harley McGee draws on his experience with the government at senior regional and departmental levels, and on primary and secondary sources, to examine the evolution of federal regional development policies and the structures developed between 1970 and 1991 to implement them. He dispels some of the myths and challenges some of the perceptions about the manner in which regional development has been tackled by governments in Canada. He explores the federal-provincial dimensions of regional development, as well as the difficulty of reconciling the perceived dichotomy between national and regional policies. McGee argues that the 1982 move away from the DREE model of regional development was a mistake, and suggests that the predilection of governments for reorganising existing instruments of regional development policy and creating new ones has been detrimental to regional economies. Mindful of the new realities of the global economy within which Canada and its regions must compete, and of the promise/threat of rapidly changing technology, McGee identifies the need for a new order of priorities with which governments can meet these challenges and opportunities.
