Getting to Good Friday intertwines literary analysis and narrative history in an accessible account of the shifts in thinking and talking about Northern Ireland's divided society that brought thirty years of political violence to a close with the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. Drawing on decades of reading, researching, and teaching Northern Irish literature and talking and corresponding with Northern Irish writers, Marilynn Richtarik describes literary reactions and contributions to the peace process during the fifteen years preceding the Agreement and in the immediate post-conflict era. Progress in this period hinged on negotiators' ability to revise the terms used to discuss the conflict. As poet Michael Longley commented in 1998, 'In its language the Good Friday Agreement depended on an almost poetic precision and suggestiveness to get its complicated message across.' Interpreting selected literary works by Brian Friel, Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Deirdre Madden, Seamus Deane, Bernard MacLaverty, Colum McCann, and David Park within a detailed historical frame, Richtarik demonstrates the extent to which authors were motivated by a desire both to comment on and to intervene in unfolding political situations. Getting to Good Friday suggests that literature as literature-that is, in its formal properties in addition to anything it might have to 'say' about a given subject-can enrich readers' historical understanding. Through Richtarik's engaging narrative, creative writing emerges as both the medium of and a metaphor for the peace process itself.

This book could save you $1 million! OK, maybe not - but some school districts have spent that much defending themselves (and not always successfully) in First Amendment lawsuits brought by students and their parents. First Amendment litigation is on the rise across the nation, and as any principal who has sat through a deposition in one of those cases can tell you, the raw emotions and zealous anger that fuels such disputes can become a massive distraction from your real job of running a school. The Oldest Rule is a comprehensive examination of the different First Amendment issues involving students that public school administrators and attorneys are increasingly facing on daily basis. We will look at such topics as school prayer, dress codes, student threats and cyberbullying, the distribution of literature, the use of public facilities by outside groups, the celebration of religious holidays, and the rise of esoteric religions and their impact in the public schools. Written by Chris Gilbert, an attorney with over twenty-one years' experience advising and representing school districts - big and small, urban and rural -- this book combines discussions of the legal standards and key case decisions with practical advice and hypotheticals.

People of faith are very much a part of the masses of people engaging in social media today as a way of life. Culturally ingrained as a method of quick and succinct communication is the advent of text messaging, which seemingly has begun to replace routine telephone communication for many. Yet the greatest message of all was sent thousands of years ago to humankind and remains accessible to everyone who desires to read it. It is God’s text message written in the scriptures for our daily use. Gotta Text! is a thirty-one-day devotional that members of the body of Christ can use to encourage one another. It becomes a vehicle to connect people to the Gospel message through everyday encounters. This book is an interactive devotional in which the reader has an opportunity to “text” a friend or group of friends with a selected verse of a scripture-inspired message that compliments the devotional of the day.

It has never been easy to preach about the cross and resurrection of Jesus, but difficulties today are particularly challenging. Hearers ask tough questions of the church and the Christian faith, and they are not satisfied by formulaic answers. People are often suspicious of doctrine and are attracted to a broad but vague or pluralistic spirituality rather than the classical claims of Christianity. In this climate, preachers often see preaching on the central events of the Christian story, the crucifixion and resurrection, as more of a problem than a possibility, more of a burden than a joy. They wonder not only how to preach the "old, old story" of cross and resurrection but whether they should preach these themes at all. This book addresses these concerns and shows preachers how to preach the cross and resurrection in fresh, culturally relevant ways that deepen Christian discipleship. Each chapter shows the relevance of preaching the cross for addressing a particular congregational concern. What has ironically become a stumbling block in the pulpit, the stone that preachers often reject--preaching on the cross and resurrection of Jesus--can serve as the cornerstone for building up the congregation for discipleship in our world.

In recent years, not only in Spain but in the West in general, we have been witnesses to a war against phenomena broadly grouped together under the heading of "terrorism," and yet the problem not only continues, but moreover, there does not appear to be any major signal that would indicate to us that those who belong to "the other side"—the "terrorists"—may be weakening. Just as in Afghanistan, President Obama's administration appears to have settled on a policy of separating the moderates from the radicals within the ranks of the Taliban and seeing into the possibilities of negotiating with them. In Spain too, various administrations, ever since democracy returned to Spain with the death of Franco on November 20, 1975, and the promulgation of a new constitution on December 6, 1977, have tried to negotiate with Euskadi eta Askatasuna—ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom in the Basque language)—in order to end the problem of nationalist-separatist political violence in the Basque Country in northern Spain, including the provinces of Araba, Gipúzkoa, Navarre, and Bizkaia.

This collection offers a detailed assessment of the varied ways in which President Barack Obama was received by audiences beyond America's borders and assesses what effect this had on his foreign policy initiatives. The book approaches international perceptions of President Obama through specific case study examinations of his most significant state visits, offering original insights into Obama's reception in Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa. Chapters on Europe explore the complex relationship that Obama shared with both British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Northern Ireland's fragile executive. The papal visit is also examined as well as Obama's image in Russia, which explores the varied ways in which state-controlled media attempted to portray Obama as an enemy of Russia. Chapters on the Middle East address the various shifts that occurred in America's relationship with Iran under Obama, Israeli hostilities towards Obama, and Turkey's more assertive foreign policy. Other contributions include analysis of Obama's visits to Ghana and Kenya, providing important insights into US-Africa relations under his administration and Obama's historic visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan. Together, these essays provide a detailed and comprehensive assessment of Obama's state visits, with much needed insight into how the perceptions of Obama, formed by these visits, affected the US' diplomatic and foreign policy initiatives under his administration.
