A tour of the publishing plant and editorial offices of a city news paper was led by a man who, in addition to being on the staff of the newspaper, is pastor of a church. He and many of the other pastors must supplement the income from their churches with income from commercial enterprises. Under the circumstances, this is not dis honorable, but it is unfortunate. In one of the most helpful services of worship, the music was led by a choir directed by a missionary who, with his wife, is giving full time to music. Both are graduates of a well-known choir college. In their short time in Brazil, they have demonstrated the possibility of transforming group singing into a beautiful and uplifting element in public worship. It is intended primarily to furnish a means of access to the various aspects of development of those states which are collectively termed Latin America. Until lately little attempt has been made to study the evolution and international importance of our southern neighbors, as the paucity of comprehensive works on Hispanic America witnesses. Only with the increasing com mercial importance of these states have we become aware of the existence of a number of large and potentially wealthy and pow erful nations at our very door; and it must be confessed that as the origin of this interest was commercial, the basis of our concern continues to be primarily economic. Hence, we have been studying latin-american social and cultural development largely for the purpose of understanding latin-american busi ness methods and opportunities. We are coming to realize, however, that these southern te publics have more to offer than mere opportunities for commer cial and financial exploitation. It becomes increasingly evident that here are great nations in the making, having their own distinct types of institutions and culture, their own likes and dislikes, and, withal, a growing consciousness of self-depend ence and strength which makes them constantly more worthy of consideration as friends or foes. In a careful, sympathetic study of these budding nations we have the true germs of genuine pan-americanism. Only by thorough mutual understanding can all the nations of the western hemisphere develop a spirit of international coopera tion based no longer on diplomatic expression of good will, but upon the recognition of common aims and interests toward'the promotion of the common welfare. The reader must search among a multitude of articles and rare publications for the scattered information which will give a picture of the whole. Many items included here may seem out side the subject; but Latin American art is an undeveloped field, and we must look to authors writing on other matters for information and suggestions. For example, there is not one book or article which deals thoroughly with the colonial art of Bolivia, although Bolivia in that period produced some of the most original and interesting work of the whole Spanish American empire. In such a situation, any publication which contains good photographs or exact descriptions, or which can shed light on any aspect of colonial life in Bolivia, is valuable. In this larger sense, there is a good deal of information available in print, and the size of this bibliography - already selective - has surprised the editors. Naturally the principle of selection has varied for each country with the material available in the field of art, and such collateral reading has been admitted more sparingly in the case of countries like Mexico and the Argentine which ofier richer bibliographies of art.
