Physische Gewalt ist eine Universalie der Kulturen und zu allen Zeiten zu beobachten. Besserung im Sinne einer Mäßigung oder einer Abnahme von Gewalt ist in der bisherigen Geschichte der Menschheit nicht festzustellen. Die Formen und der Umfang, in dem sie ausgeübt wird, sind aber einem historischen Wandel unterworfen. Dieser Wandel selbst ist für den Historiker und Kulturwissenschaftler von Interesse, denn jede Zeit findet zugleich besondere Ausdrucksformen, in denen sie über physische Gewalt kommuniziert. Diese mediale Verständigung über physische Gewalt ist ein zentraler Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Kulturen. Die Art und Weise, in der extreme Formen von Gewalt verboten, zugelassen und in Bildern wie Texten thematisiert werden, offenbart zeit- und kulturspezifische Regeln und Ordnungsmuster. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge versuchen, dies anhand verschiedener Kulturen des Altertums zu verdeutlichen. Dabei geht es auch, aber nicht in erster Linie um eine Rekonstruktion der Gewaltexzesse, sondern um die Frage, ob und wie diese in den Medien der Zeit wiedergegeben werden und welche Informationen sich daraus für die jeweiligen Kulturen der Antike gewinnen lassen.

Violence had long been central to the experience of Hellenistic Greek cities and to their civic discourses. This volume asks how these discourses were shaped and how they functioned within the particular cultural constructs of the Hellenistic world. It was a period in which warfare became more professionalised, and wars increasingly ubiquitous. The period also saw major changes in political structures that led to political and cultural experimentation and transformation in which the political and cultural heritage of the classical city-state encountered the new political principles and cosmopolitan cultures of Hellenism. Finally, and in a similar way, it saw expanded opportunities for cultural transfer in cities through (re)constructions of urban space. Violence thus entered the city through external military and political shocks, as well as within emerging social hierarchies and civic institutions. Such factors also inflected economic activity, religious practices and rituals, and the artistic, literary and philosophical life of the polis.

Privacy is a widely debated concept today, and a paramount concern for modern societies: the ideas and prerogatives that it encapsulates are considered, nowadays, to be essential human rights and key issues when defining the mutual relationship between the individual and society at large. In order to investigate the boundaries and nuances of privacy in the Roman society, the city of Pompeii provides a rare case in point, due to the extraordinary concentration and readability of contextual archaeological data. The aim of this volume which originated from an International Workshop held at the Center for Advanced Studies of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, is to contribute to a better knowledge of the domestic space in Pompeii and other cities of the Roman world as mirrored by the interplay between individual and social spaces.
