Spaemann, mit dem Titel: Rechte für Embryonen? – Die Menschenwürde lässt sich nicht alleine auf die biologische Zugehörigkeit zur Menschheit gründen.

How does biotechnology touch on human destiny? What are its promises and challenges? In search for a response, the present volume turns to the thought of Hans Jonas, one of the pioneers and founding fathers of bioethics. The continued relevance of his ideas is exemplified by the way Jurgen Habermas applies them to the current debate. The chief promise of biotechnology is to increase our freedom by overcoming the limits of the human condition. The main risk of biotechnology, as both Jonas and Habermas seeit, is to diminish or outright abolish our capacity for responsibility and morality. It is argued that the greater freedom is not simply freedom from constraints but freedom for our destiny: the freedom to be the benevolent, responsible, and spontaneous authors of our lives, capable of communion and love. The touchstone for evaluating any biotechnological procedure has to be this greater freedom.

CHRISTOPH REHMANN-SUTTER, MARCUS DÜWELL, DIETMAR MIETH When we placed “finitude”, “limits of human existence” as a motto over a round of discussion on biomedicine and bioethics (which led to this collection of essays) we did not know how far this would lead us into methodological quandaries. However, we felt intuitively that an interdisciplinary approach including social and cultural sciences would have an advantage over a solely disciplinary (philosophical or theological) analysis. Bioethics, if it is to have adequate discriminatory power, should include sensitivity to the cultural contexts of biomedicine, and also to the cultural contexts of bioethics itself. Context awareness, of course, is not foreign to philosophical or theological bioethics, for the simple reason that the issues tackled in the debates (as in other fields of ethics) could not be adequately understood outside their contexts. Moral issues are always accompanied by contexts. When we try to unpack them – which is necessary to make them accessible to ethical discussion – we are regularly confronted with the fact that in removing too much of the context we do not clarify an issue, but make it less comprehensible. The context – at least some essential parts of it – is intrinsic to the issue. Unpacking in ethics is therefore a different procedure. It does not mean peeling the context off, but rather identifying which contextual elements are essential for an understanding of the key moral aspects of the issue, and explaining how they establish its particular character.

Die Kirchengeschichte Theodorets, die mit dem Aufkommen des Arianismus beginnt und mit dem Tod Theodorets im Jahr 429 endet (obwohl sie 449-450 fertiggestellt wurde), unterscheidet sich in ihrem Stil stark von denen des Sokrates Scholasticus und des Sozomen. Sie enthält viele Quellen, die sonst verloren gegangen wären, insbesondere Briefe über die arianische Kontroverse; das Buch ist jedoch extrem parteiisch, die Häretiker werden durchweg angeschwärzt und als von der "arianischen Pest" befallen beschrieben. Die Erzählung ist komprimierter als bei den anderen Historikern, und Theodoret reiht oft Dokumente aneinander, mit nur kurzen Kommentaren dazwischen. Ursprüngliches Material mit Informationen über Antiochia wird vor allem in den letzteren Büchern beschrieben.
