This latest installment of the popular, action-packed series follows Coco as her fortunes take a turn for the worse as she faces a looming threat while on the brink of fame. Simultaneously struggling with her own potential handicap and her mother's precarious sobriety, Coco calls on Deedee to help decode an enigmatic message from Miss Katie. In this Seal Studies title, author and professor Maythee Rojas offers a look at the intricate crossroads of being a woman of color. Women of Color and Feminism tackles the question of how women of color experience feminism, and how race and socioeconomics can alter this experience. Rojas explores the feminist woman of color's identity and how it relates to mainstream culture and feminism. Featuring profiles of historical women of color (including Hottentot Venus, Josefa Loaiza, and Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash), a discussion of the arts, and a vision for developing a feminist movement built on love and community healing, Rojas examines the intersectional nature of being a woman of color and a feminist. Covering a range of topics, including sexuality, gender politics, violence, stereotypes, and reproductive rights, Women of Color and Feminism offers a far-reaching view of this multilayered identity. This powerful study strives to rewrite race and feminism, encouraging women to ''take back the body'' in a world of new activism. Women of Color and Feminism encourages a broad conversation about race, class, and gender and creates a discourse that brings together feminism and racial justice movements.

Ever since this country came into being, women have waged battles for rights in the pages of their plays, and on the stages where those plays were performed. - FROM THE PREFACE BY SHIRLEY LAURO Front Lines is a pathbreaking collection of the most important, critically acclaimed plays written by the country's leading contemporary female playwrights. Including seven full scripts and accompanying materials, Front Lines provides both major examples of the playwright's craft and an essential introduction to the politically inspired work of female dramatists of the twenty-first century. Here is Jessica Blank's widely heralded The Exonerated (written with Erik Jensen), based on interviews with American prisoners incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Also included is Nilaja Sun's outstanding No Child . . ., winner of the Outer Critics Circle's 2007 John Gassner Award for Best New Play - a funny, stirring one-woman show centering on an inner-city teacher's success at involving her rebellious students in their own education by putting on a play. Rounding out the collection are Emily Mann's Mrs. Packard, Paula Vogel's Hot 'n' Throbbing, Shirley Lauro's Clarence Darrow's Last Trial, Quiara Alegra Hudes's Eliot: A Soldier's Fugue, and Cindy Cooper's Words of Choice. With a preface by distinguished playwright Shirley Lauro and an introduction by theater critic Alexis Greene, Front Lines also includes short biographies of the playwrights and a production photo of each play.

Fire, one of three new QUEER FILM CLASSICS this fall, delves into the controversial 1996 lesbian love story by Indian-born director Deepa Mehta. Set in a contemporary middle-class Hindu household in the heart of Delhi, Fire is the story of Radha and Sita, the wives of two brothers, who fall in love with one another. Crisis overtakes the extended family when a servant discovers the relationship and tells one of the husbands; overcoming both a literal and allegorical 'trial by fire,' the two women leave their marriages to make a life together. The film premiered to great acclaim in 1996, and travelled the international circuit before being finally released in India in 1999. The consequences of the films Indian premiere were both profound and provocative: outraged by the film's explicit depiction of a lesbian relationship, protesters went on a rampage, tearing down posters, vandalizing cinemas showing the film, and disrupting screenings in Delhi and Bombay, setting off a maelstrom of public discourse on issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech in India. Director Deepa Mehta and the two leading actresses were targeted for attack and harassment by extremists of the Hindu Right. This book examines the controversy that divided a nation, but which ultimately led to counter protests among the films supporters, resulting in its successful and uninterrupted run in Indian theaters. The book also considers Fire's scathing attack on both heterosexism and Hindu practices in India that oppress and marginalize women, as well as its revolutionary treatment of female characters, whose traditional duties are imbued with an unprecedented sensuality.

From The Bottom Of The Heap written by Robert Hillary King and has been published by ReadHowYouWant.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Winner of the 2008 PASS Award (Prevention for a Safer Society) from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In 1970, a jury convicted Robert Hillary King of a crime he did not commit and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. He became a member of the Black Panther Party while in Angola State Penitentiary, successfully organizing prisoners to improve conditions. In return, prison authorities beat him, starved him, and gave him life without parole after framing him for a second crime. He was thrown into solitary confinement, where he remained in a six by nine foot cell for 29 years as one of the Angola 3. In 2001, the state grudgingly acknowledged his innocence and set him free. This is his story. It begins at the beginning; born black, born poor, born in Louisiana in1942, King journeyed to Chicago as a hobo at the age of 15. He married and had a child, and briefly pursued a semi-pro boxing career to help provide for his family. Just a teenager when he entered the Louisiana penal system for the first time, King tells of his attempts to break out of this system, and his persistent pursuit of justice where there is none. Yet this remains a story of inspiration and courage, and the triumph of the human spirit. The conditions in Angola almost defy description, yet King never gave up his humanity, or the work towards justice for all prisoners that he continues to do today. From the Bottom of the Heap, so simply and humbly told, strips bare the economic and social injustices inherent in our society, while continuing to be a powerful literary testimony to our own strength and capacity to overcome.

Dread written by Philip Alcabes and has been published by ReadHowYouWant.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07 with Health & Fitness categories.

The average individual is far more likely to die in a car accident than from a communicable disease yet we are still much more fearful of the epidemic. Even at our most level-headed, the thought of an epidemic can inspire terror. As Philip Alcabes persuasively argues in Dread, our anxieties about epidemics are created not so much by the germ or microbe in question - or the actual risks of contagion - but by the unknown, the undesirable, and the misunderstood. Alcabes examines epidemics through history to show how they reflect the particular social and cultural anxieties of their times. From Typhoid Mary to bioterrorism, as new outbreaks are unleashed or imagined, new fears surface, new enemies are born, and new behaviors emerge. Dread dissects the fascinating story of the imagined epidemic: the one that we think is happening, or might happen; the one that disguises moral judgments and political agendas, the one that ultimately expresses our deepest fears.
