Memoirs of a Jew who was born as Emanuel Tenenwurzel in 1928 in Vilna and moved to Miechów as a child. The Polish antisemitism he experienced before the war worsened under German occupation. In early 1941 his family was interned in the Miechów ghetto, whose Judenrat he depicts as facilitating Jewish survival. His family escaped deportation and he hid in a Catholic monastery. He was sexually abused by a monk there, then hidden by a member of the Polish underground in a village. From there a good German helped him get to Kraków, where his mother and sister hid. After escaping to Hungary, he was caught trying to emigrate to Eretz Israel. He was briefly incarcerated in Yugoslavia and then in Budapest, where he met the paratrooper Peretz Goldstein, who had been sent to occupied Europe from Palestine. Claims that the paratroopers did not strengthen Jewish resistance, but increased the risk to the local Jewish underground. Under the Arrow Cross regime, he managed to obtain "Aryan" papers. After the war he encountered anti-Jewish hostility in Miechów and learned that his father had perished; he lived for some time in Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1952. Framed by discussion of literary testimony, with Wiesel's literary memoir Night as an entry point, this innovative study explores the blurred boundary of fact and fiction in Holocaust literature. It asks whether there is a poetics of the Holocaust and what might be the criteria for literary witnessing. Most Polish Jews who survived the Second World War did not go to concentration camps, but were banished by Stalin to the remote prison settlements and Gulags of the Soviet Union. Less than ten percent of Polish Jews came out of the war alive—the largest population of Jews who endured—for whom Soviet exile was the main chance for survival. Ellen G. Friedman’s The Seven, A Family Holocaust Story is an account of this displacement. Friedman always knew that she was born to Polish-Jewish parents on the run from Hitler, but her family did not describe themselves as Holocaust survivors since that label seemed only to apply only to those who came out of the concentration camps with numbers tattooed on their arms. The title of the book comes from the closeness that set seven individuals apart from the hundreds of thousands of other refugees in the Gulags of the USSR. The Seven—a name given to them by their fellow refugees—were Polish Jews from Warsaw, most of them related. Smolar (b. 1905 in Poland) was in 1941-42 a leader of the Jewish underground resistance organization in the ghetto of Minsk, and later fought in a partisan unit in the Minsk area. His memoirs describe the first days of the war; the establishment of the ghetto in Minsk; the creation of the two underground organizations in the ghetto, one by refugees from Poland, the other - by native Jews, and their subsequent unification; Nazi mass murders of Jews in the ghetto in 1941-42; the flight of ghetto Jews to the forests in order to join the Soviet partisans; partisan warfare. Smolar, as well as other Jews who fought with the partisans, were shocked by the antisemitism of some their non-Jewish comrades in arms. Antisemitism became a habitual phenomenon in the postwar USSR.
