Ghetto veac XX prezinta „viata romantata a lui Baruch Landau, care e, se pare, mai putin viata lui, cat viata epocii sale si a evreilor.” (Ury Benador) Romanul debuteaza abrupt, cu marea calatorie din 1930 a „financiarului” Baruch Landau, soldata cu disparitia sa socanta, apoi anul 1925, an de cotitura, cand, casatorit cu Mira fiica unui rabin, cauta sa plece la Bucuresti pentru a iesi din saracie. Epopeea familiei Landau incepe in ghetoul din Dorohoi, continua la Braila unde tatal, croitorul Mendl Landau, decide sa se mute pentru a scapa de saracie. In copilarie, Baruch face cunostinta cu antisemitismul in mai multe forme, de la framantarile din 1907, cand taranii rasculati se dezlantuie impotriva evreilor, sau cand sustine examenul la liceu, la care obtine nota 8,33 dar nu este primit deoarece locurile fusesera completate cu „neevrei”. Neavand bani pentru o scoala particulara, se angajeaza mai intai ucenic la un fotograf, apoi functionar la o societate comerciala. Se apropie de miscarea socialista, fiind fascinat de Stefan Gheorghiu sau Panait Istrati. Baruch devine obsedat de problema evreiasca, incearca sa scoata o gazeta in idis si chiar sa lanseze o miscare de popularizare a limbii si literaturii idis. Romanul se incheie brusc prin seducerea brutala a Mirei. Ghetto veac XX a fost prima parte a unei trilogii planuite de Benador, in care urmatoarele volume ar fi fost Mal si bezna, si Urcus in gol. Acestea insa n-au vazut niciodata lumina tiparului.
