To escape his troubled past, Norman heads to the desert to lose himself in his work. He has just received a research grant to study the ghost towns and abandoned mines that litter the landscape. But when he comes across a group of desert-dwelling outcasts and is taken captive by their charismatic leader Jacoby, he is introduced to an alternative way of life: one that both repulses and mesmerizes. As he struggles to make sense of this strange new world – with its perverse and unorthodox practices – Norman begins to realize he must either yield to the ever-watchful Jacoby, or take his chances and run. Ireland’s refined and sparse style cuts through to the dark heart of the American dream in this chilling novel about the thin lines that separate the civilized from the primitive, and the living from the dead.

Duncan’s ambitions have been destroyed. Removed as High Priest, he and his pregnant lover have been exiled to the wastelands, a land so desolate that it’s merely a matter of days before their dried-up shriveled bodies are food for the jackals. Unable to save Duncan, Alexis retreats to the Tarrac pastures only to discover her adoptive father Menec has decided he’s had enough of palace intrigue and is off to the far north to find out what happened to his father all those years ago. Unfortunately, as the new Tarrac Master and nation’s Berserker, Alexis’ loyalty and obedience are demanded by the very man who sent Duncan to his death. However, things aren’t going too well for King Diad as he finally realizes he has run out of time and quickly discovers he doesn’t have the necessary forces to prevent his brother’s quest to rule Gambria. With his brother marching on Mull, Diad must find a way to save himself. Back in the Temple, life seems to have returned to the dark days when Vix was High Priest as Cattwg has finally achieved his greatest ambition. Yet there are many in the Temple who remember the vibrance of life during the brief time when Duncan was in charge. Though they are silent, their thoughts are the same – if only Duncan was still here.

In the darkness of night, a haunting, reddish-orange moon slowly creeps up into the sky as a whisper of gray smoke slithers up through the rocky, dry soil covering a make shift grave, growing as it rises, slowly taking form. Long fingernails curving downward, looking more like claws than fingernails, rise up out of the grave as her midnight black hair glistens in the moonlight, her arms and hands spreading outward, pushing her upward. Her skin now pale with a grayish tint, rotting and sunken in around her neck, cheeks and eye sockets, pulls tightly against her skull, emphasizing its bony structure and looking more like a skull than a face. The cut on her lower jaw and chin ripped open, exposing her jawbone, the grave taking its toll. Rising up, the gold colored dress with black lace now fully visible, she raises her hands towards the full moon, an eerie, moaning sound filling the night as tears of blood drip down from dark, black holes where her eyes once were. Softly touching her face, standing above the arroyo where her body is buried, she realizes this is where it happened, right on this spot. In flashes, she sees him hitting her, tastes the blood in her mouth and feels him ripping her eyes from her skull, as her world turns dark.

“A haunting story about the long reach of the past.”—Maureen Corrigan, NPR’S Fresh Air “In this intriguing book, [Nordhaus] shares her journey to discover who her immigrant ancestor really was—and what strange alchemy made the idea of her linger long after she was gone.” —People La Posada—“place of rest”—was once a grand Santa Fe mansion. It belonged to Abraham and Julia Staab, who emigrated from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. After they died, the house became a hotel. And in the 1970s, the hotel acquired a resident ghost—a sad, dark-eyed woman in a long gown. Strange things began to happen there: vases moved, glasses flew, blankets were ripped from beds. Julia Staab died in 1896—but her ghost, they say, lives on. In American Ghost, Julia’s great-great-granddaughter, Hannah Nordhaus, traces her ancestor’s transfiguration from nineteenth-century Jewish bride to modern phantom. Family diaries, photographs, and newspaper clippings take her on a riveting journey through three hundred years of German history and the American immigrant experience. With the help of historians, genealogists, family members, and ghost hunters, she weaves a masterful, moving story of fin-de-siècle Europe and pioneer life, villains and visionaries, medicine and spiritualism, imagination and truth, exploring how lives become legends, and what those legends tell us about who we are.
