Why do modern poets quote from dictionaries in their poems? How has the tape recorder changed the poet's voice? What has shopping to do with Gertrude Stein's aesthetics? These and other questions form the core of Ghostlier Demarcations, a study of modern poetry as a material medium. One of today's most respected critics of twentieth-century poetry and poetics, Michael Davidson argues that literary materiality has been dominated by an ideology of modernism, based on the ideal of the autonomous work of art, which has hindered our ability to read poetry as a socially critical medium. By focusing on writing as a palimpsest involving numerous layers of materiality—from the holograph manuscript to the printed book—Davidson exposes modern poetry's engagement with larger historical forces. The palimpsest that results is less a poem than an arrested stage of writing in whose layers can be discerned ghostly traces of other texts. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1997.

Ghostlier Demarcations written by Richard Stuecker and has been published by Kelsay Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-24 with Poetry categories.

In the powerful and thought-provoking poems that make up Ghostlier Demarcations, Richard Stuecker establishes ethereal lines that mark the shadowy boundaries between the secular, spiritual, and profound aspects of our lives. Stuecker then masterfully blurs those lines as he moves from observations of daily life ("On evening walks, I rediscover / where I live, whom I live among"), to reflections on a life lived ("Must I meet everyone I knew alive?") to meditations on existence and identity ("I am a tourist in a life-long search for connection to myself"). Stuecker lulls readers into feeling a sense of security in the certainty of their own identities, and then holds mirrors-in the forms of Mark Rothko's monolithic paintings ("pulling me into my center, like a remembered dream")-to their faces so that they have no choice but to stare deeply into their own reflections and confront who they really are. - Kip Knott, author of Tragedy, Ecstasy, Doom, and so on Richard Stuecker's Ghostlier Demarcations bears the marks of pandemic, of a consciousness moving through a world heavy with hauntings. These poems come to anchor in the land, in memory rich with its seasonal shifting, arrival of signs, philosophical questions as we move among the living and the dead. Like a film in the dream space between, the poems in Ghostlier Demarcations interrogate religious shadows, moments passing, the "mirror maze" of the everyday woven into the mystery, and ultimately, the artform itself into which the poet vanishes. - Doug Cole The poems of Ghostlier Demarcations search for the still point beneath which great movement occurs - a moment in an experienced life when "we always turn / toward where we come from, / against chill reminiscence / rising less and less, more and more / we lock the door to still the night." Here we find the importance in the immediacy of simple but deep connections, such as friendships made and sustained over coffee, the passing of a mother, the daily reacquaintance with a neighborhood turned stranger. In a meditative approach, Stuecker seeks a more direct and eternal connection with the world through mediums such as memory and the contemplation of Mark Rothko paintings. These poems search for a sustainable resolution to such contradictions in a time when death looms ever larger: "Death quickens my search / for connection to compassion: all in this moment / a possibility, a promise to lift us like blue herons, / wide wings spread against the sun." - Joshua Bridgwater Hamilton

This is both the lightest and the darkest Angel novel. The love scenes are sweet, poignant, and steamy, but there are infinitely more painful scenes which will wrench your heart. The crescendo of the book is reached nearly two hundred pages before the conclusion, and the emotions and intellect of the reader will be challenged on every page. More than the other two novels, Ghostlier Demarcations has mutliple chapters from the perspectives of Maggie, Wanda, and the unbelievable Rose. Their love for Angel and their other, new loves, are rendered completely from their points of view. This novel should come with a ‘hotness’ warning....

In these essays some of today's leading literary scholars and cultural critics re-examine major writers, genres, and themes in relation to their traditional period affiliations. The essays cover a broad range of writers and periods from the Middle Ages to the present, grouped in two main areas: Chaucer and Medieval and Renaissance studies (Larry D. Benson, Heiko A. Oberman, Lee Patterson, and Aldo Scaglione), and English and American literary history (Sanford Budick, H. M. Daleski, Denis Donoghue, Robert J. Griffin, Geoffrey Hartman, J. Hillis Miller, Jerome McGann, and Helen Vendler). In addition to shedding new light on a specific author, each essay also refines or reinvigorates critical approaches to specific periods. The analyses illuminate and clarify our understanding of what are traditionally but problematically called the Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Romantic, Modern, and Postmodern eras in European cultural history.

Painting Words written by Beatriz Dr Gonzalez Moreno and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

Painting Words: Aesthetics and the Relationship between Image and Text addresses the importance of dialogue between art and literature, text and image in our image-saturated era. In a globalized world, isolation and compartmentalization hinder us back, whereas the Romantic idea of belonging urges us to look beyond and to build bridges. Bearing this Romantic spirit in mind, rather than focusing on a traditional paragonal approach, this book puts forward the benefits of alliance by offering an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective. Illustrations are included to guide the reader into comparativism and intermedial encounters, while providing an inspiring overview of the literary and visual department both in Europe and America from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The different essays lead us through an aesthetic exploratory journey by the hand of Cervantes, Shakespeare, Felicia Hemans, Emily Eden, William Wordsworth, Edgar A. Poe, Flannery O’Connor, N. Scott Momaday, José Joaquín de Mora, Wallace Stevens and José Ángel Valente, among others. Editors, Beatriz González Moreno and Fernando González Moreno have brought together an international group of scholars around the idea of "painting words," which they define as the pictorial ability of language to stir the reader’s imagination and the way illustrators have "read" literary works over the course of centuries. Many traditional comparative studies examine literature belonging to specific time periods or movements, far less frequently do they bridge visual culture with text-- Painting Words: Aesthetics and the Relationship between Image and Text aims to do just that.

The rapprochement of anthropology and literary studies, begun nearly fifteen years ago by such pioneering scholars as Clifford Geertz, Edward Said, and James Clifford, has led not only to the creation of the new scholarly domain of cultural studies but to the deepening and widening of both original fields. Literary critics have learned to "anthropologize" their studies--to ask questions about the construction of meanings under historical conditions and reflect on cultural "situatedness." Anthropologists have discovered narratives other than the master narratives of disciplinary social science that need to be drawn on to compose ethnographies. Culture/Contexture brings together for the first time literature and anthropology scholars to reflect on the antidisciplinary urge that has made the creative borrowing between their two fields both possible and necessary. Critically expanding on such pathbreaking works as James Clifford and George Marcus's Writing Culture and Marcus and Michael M. J. Fischer's Anthropology as Cultural Critique, contributors explore the fascination that draws the disciplines together and the fears that keep them apart. Their topics demonstrate the rich intersection of anthropology and literary studies, ranging from reading and race to writing and representation, incest and violence, and travel and time.
