Ogni città italiana dopo la guerra ha dedicato una via, un corso o una piazza, spesso centrale, a Giacomo Matteotti, deputato del Psi dal 1919 al 1922, e poi – poco prima della Marcia su Roma – segretario del Partito socialista unitario di Filippo Turati e Claudio Treves. Fin dagli esordi del fascismo, Matteotti fu considerato un nume tutelare dagli oppositori del regime, «perché non transigeva e perché aveva un coraggio che mancava a troppi altri», come scrisse il foglio clandestino «Non mollare» nel 1925, poco dopo il suo omicidio. Ma a dispetto dell’importanza della figura di Matteotti per la storia italiana, la sua memoria è ancora sostanzialmente legata solo al suo assassinio per mano dei fascisti e alle vicende politiche che ne seguirono. A parte la toponomastica, poco è stato tramandato nel nostro immaginario collettivo dell’uomo di pensiero e d’azione, del suo riformismo, della sua idea di politica, di giustizia sociale, di libertà e di avversione alla guerra. Giacomo Matteotti fu un attore di primissimo piano nella sinistra italiana di inizio Novecento, tanto che «il mito popolare di Matteotti, coltivato clandestinamente durante il ventennio fascista non solo dai fuoriusciti ma anche dalla gente comune, contribuì certamente al sorprendente risultato dei socialisti nelle elezioni per l’Assemblea Costituente del 2 giugno 1946». L’Italia migliore si rispecchiava in lui e nel suo riformismo intransigente. A cento anni dalla morte, in un contesto politico nel quale si fa sempre più strada, pericolosamente, una certa strisciante relativizzazione della dittatura fascista di Mussolini, Federico Fornaro scrive la biografia completa e aggiornata di un politico scomodo, dai suoi esordi nel Polesine fino al suo tragico epilogo, per analizzarne il pensiero e la statura morale, andando oltre la sterile celebrazione del martire. Ne esce un ritratto a tutto tondo, che in parte spiega questa sorta di «amnesia» che pare aver colto l’Italia per un secolo intero.
