"The publication is the first comprehensive study of Baruchello's relationship with the moving image from the sixties on. Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Gianfranco Baruchello: Cold Cinema. Film, video e opere 1960-1999, held at La Triennale di Milano in 2014 and 2015, the book opens with a densely packed montage of Baruchello's own notes, images, and documents, presented by means of a medium dear to the artist, photocopies. An essay by Alessandro Rabottini takes us through the rooms of the exhibition at La Triennale di Milano, while a conversation between Baruchello and Massimiliano Gioni highlights some key aspects of his ideas about cinema. Carla Subrizi's text winds its way through his entire production of films and videos, whereas an essay by Philippe-Alain Michaud examines some of the historical roots of Verifica incerta (1964-65). The heart of the publication catalogues the artist's complete oeuvre, with a synopsis by Carla Subrizi of every single filmic work, a history of their screenings reconstructed by Daniela Zanoletti, and a selection of stills. The book ends with a critical anthology of texts that Baruchello has written during the course of his career. This section, which is edited by Carla Subrizi, is accompanied by an ample bibliography."--Publisher's description.

Medical Humanity and Inhumanity in the German-Speaking World is the first volume dedicated to exploring the interface of medicine, the human and the humane in the German-speaking lands. The volume tracks the designation and making through medicine of the human and inhuman, and the humane and inhumane, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Eight individual chapters undertake explorations into ways in which theories and practices of medicine in the German-speaking world have come to define the human, and highlight how such theories and practices have consolidated, or undermined, notions of humane behaviour. Cultural analysis is central to this investigation, foregrounding the reflection, refraction and indeed creation of these theories and practices in literature, life-writing and other discourses and media. Contributors bring to bear perspectives from literary studies, film studies, critical theory, cultural studies, history, and the history of medicine and psychiatry. Thus, this collection is historical in the most expansive sense, for it debates not only what historical accounts bring to our understanding of this topic. It encompasses too investigation of life-writing, documentary, and theory and literary works to bring to light elusive, paradoxical, underexplored – yet vital – issues in history and culture.

This volume explores the Italian contribution to the current global phenomenon of a “return to reality” by examining the country’s rich cultural production in literature and cinema. The focus is particularly on works from the period spanning the Nineties to the present day which offer alternatives to notions of reality as manufactured by the collusion between the neo-liberal state and the media. The book also discusses Italy’s relationship with its own cultural past by investigating how Italian authors deal with the return of the specter of Neorealism as it haunts the modern artistic imagination in this new epoch of crisis. Furthermore, the volume engages in dialogue with previous works of criticism on contemporary Italian realism, while going beyond them in devoting equal attention to cinema and literature. The resulting interactions will aid the reader in understanding how the critical arts respond to the triumph of hyperrealism in the current era of the virtual spectacle as they seek new ways to promote cognitive transformations and foster ethical interventions.

New Theatre In Italy written by Valentina Valentini and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-22 with Drama categories.

New Theatre in Italy 1963-2013 makes the case for the centrality of late-millennium Italian avant-garde theatre in the development of the new forms of performance that have emerged in the 21st Century. Starting in the Sixties, young artists and militants in Italy reacted to the violence in their streets and ruptures in the family unit that are now recognized as having been harbingers of the end of the global post-war system. As traditional rituals of State and Church faltered, a new generation of cultural operators, largely untrained and driven away from political activism, formed collectives to explore new ways of speaking theatrically, new ways to create and experience performance, and new relationships between performer and spectator. Although the vast majority of the works created were transient, like all performance, their aesthetic and social effects continue to surface today across media on a global scale, affecting visual art, cinema, television and the behavioural aesthetics of social networks.

From the Booker-shortlisted author of The Mars Room, a career-spanning collection of spectacular essays about politics and culture. In The Hard Crowd, Rachel Kushner gathers a selection of her writing from over the course of the last twenty years that addresses the most pressing political, artistic, and cultural issues of our times - and illuminates the themes and real-life terrain that underpin her fiction. In razor-sharp essays spanning literary journalism, memoir, cultural criticism, and writing about art and literature, Kushner takes us from Jeff Koons and Marguerite Duras to a Palestinian refugee camp, from her love of classic cars to her young life in the music scene of San Francisco. The closing, eponymous essay is her manifesto on nostalgia, doom, and writing. 'I'm glad to taste something this sharp, this smart' Olivia Laing 'Wild, wide-ranging and unsparingly intelligent throughout' Vogue 'An exciting book... Kushner writes from the inside out and gives us the true story, the real deal' Kevin Barry, New Statesman, Books of the Year

Filmmaker, film essayist, installation artist, writer: the Berlin artist Harun Farocki has devoted his life to the power of images. Over the thirty-plus years of his career, Farocki has explored not the images of life but rather the life of images that surrounds us in newspapers, cinema, books, television, and advertising. Harun Farocki examines, from different critical perspectives, his vast oeuvre, which includes three feature films, critical media pieces, children’s television features, “learning films” in the tradition of Brecht, and installation pieces. Interviews, a selection of Farocki’s own writings, and an annotated filmography complete a valuable biography of this pioneering artist and his legendary career.

"The films that Andy Warhol made in the 1960s are now recognized as among the most important works of his career. One of the most ambitious projects of Warhol's cinema is the Screen Tests, a series of 472 short, black-and-white portraits of Warhol's friends, colleagues, and acquaintances filmed over a period of three years, from 1964 through 1966." "Taken as a whole, the Screen Tests are a conceptual portrait of a New York era - the complex, interconnected avant-garde art world of the mid-1960s. They also offer a reflected portrait of Warhol himself - his friendships and connections, his egalitarianism and his ambition, his fascination with personality and the human face, his eye for talent and for beauty, his mastery of the photographic, cinematic image."--BOOK JACKET.
