It was the summer of 1863 at the height of the U.S. Civil War. Federal troops fanned across Tennessee, the final state to secede from the Union, and emancipated its slaves. By July they reached Giles County and the slaves belonging to the extended family of the Abernathys, Easons, Rivers, and Tarpleys. While some chose to remain on those plantations, at least 59 of their slave men enlisted to the Union Army. They were divided among 6 colored regiments, provided essential services, participated in 12 battles and skirmishes, and were mistreated by Confederates for 9 months as prisoners of war. Many of their stories are told in their own words. It is from their military service records and pension files that their stories of slavery, family, bravery, suffering, love, and loss are revealed. This book honors their lives and is dedicated to their descendants. This book is intended to be a tool to help African-Americans break through the genealogical brick wall of slavery. At the time of the Civil War, Cullman County did not exist. It was carved mostly from the East side of Winston and the West side of Blount in 1877. This book attempts to identify all of the Confederate soldiers originating from the area which became Cullman County, as well as those who migrated to the county after the War. The book also contains rare first person accounts of the war as told by Cullman County residents George Martin Holcombe and Elijah Wilson Harper and printed in the Cullman Alabama Tribune. This book is important to the genealogy and history of Cullman County and contains much previously unpublished information on the old soldiers. It contains service records, pension applications, births, deaths, marriages, and obituaries.

On October 8, 1862, forty thousand Union and Confederate soldiers clashed at Perryville, Kentucky, in the state's largest Civil War battle. Of those who fought, none endured as much as the Tennessee and Georgia soldiers who composed Brigadier General George Maney's brigade. The Confederate unit entered the fray to save other Southern regiments and, in doing so, experienced deadly resistance. Many of those involved called the brigade's encounter the toughest of the Civil War, as several of Maney's regiments suffered casualties of 50 percent or greater. Despite relentless fighting, the Confederates were unable to break the Union line, and the Bluegrass State remained in Federal control. Join author Stuart W. Sanders as he chronicles Maney's brigade in the Battle of Perryville.
