In tutti i tempi è stato comune destino dei grandi leader essere al tempo stesso osannati e violentemente denigrati. Si pensi a Giulio Cesare, Cromwell, Robespierre, Napoleone, Bismarck, Lenin, Stalin, Hit ler; per l’Italia, a Cavour, Crispi, Mussolini e De Gasperi. E, nel nostro caso, a Giovanni Giolitti, uno dei maggiori statisti della storia dello Stato unitario. Ripetutamente presidente del Consiglio tra il 1892 e il 1921, egli ha lasciato un’orma profonda nel nostro paese. Ebbe la soddisfazione di vedere l’Italia conoscere uno sviluppo che è stato definito «una primavera economica». Eppure, la sua figura ha suscitato polemiche accesissime, generando immagini estremamente controverse, tanto da indurre Massimo L. Salvadori a parlare di una delle grandi «polemiche» del Novecento italiano.Giolitti ha diviso i suoi contemporanei e gli storici in correnti opposte: da un lato i suoi intransigenti detrattori, fra i quali spiccano Salvemini, Sturzo, Einaudi, Gramsci, che lo definirono cinico, corruttore, dittatore, un inveterato nemico del Mezzogiorno, il «ministro della mala vita», il «Giovanni Battista del fascismo», i nazionalisti che lo accusarono di essere un «criptosocialista»; dall’altro i suoi estimatori come Croce, Salvatorelli, Natale, Ansaldo, che lo considerarono un nuovo Cavour, il «ministro della buona vita», l’artefice della prima modernizzazione economica e sociale dell’Italia, colui che aveva tentato di imbrigliare il fascismo.Un grande storico si misura con le controverse immagini di Giolitti, esplorando le contraddizioni del potere, che in molti casi porta chi lo esercita ad essere oggetto di conflittualità esasperate, dall’esaltazione all’esecrazione. È questo il caso dell’«età giolittiana», una delle stagioni più fortunate dal punto di vista economico per il nostro paese che nel contempo fu il preludio della crisi dello Stato liberale.

This book examines the historical process that led to the foundation of the Italian Republic and its constitution, viewed through the personal experiences and political reflections of Adriano Olivetti (between 1919 and 1960), general manager and president of the well-known typewriter manufacturer “Ing. C. Olivetti & C.” An unbroken line of reasoning linked his maturing political reflections during the two post-war periods. The historical context of the 1950s did not prove to be very propitious, but the guidelines dispersed throughout the Italian cultural and political world from the movement that Olivetti founded were certainly seminal – generating a legacy of ideas that has only in part been recognized. What makes this study distinctive is the original approach to reading the history of Italy through Adriano Olivetti’s eyes and thoughts, far from the more common Christian Democratic or Communist perspective of those years. It is simply another view of what the Italian Republic could be and was not.
