This is the fourth volume of Models of the History of Philosophy, a collaborative work on the history of the history of philosophy dating from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Inspiriert von Levinas, auf der Grundlage einer profunden Kenntnis der klassischen deutschen Philosophie (Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Jacobi) und in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der Diskursethik (Habermas, Apel), mit der Systemtheorie (Luhmann) und mit dem Seinsdenken (Heidegger) entwickelt Olivetti eine Konzeption von Intersubjektivität, welche in "äqui-voker" Weise einen sowohl empirischen als auch transzendentalen und metaphysischen Charakter hat und als solche einen "Transzendentalismus sui generis" zum Ausdruck bringt. Personale Subjektivität wird dabei verstanden als das Ergebnis einer "Analogisierung" seitens eines Anderen (alter ego), dessen personale Subjektivität immer schon selbst einer solchen "Analogisierung" zu verdanken ist. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser wesentlich "asymmetrischen" Konzeption von Intersubjektivität ist nicht nur Olivettis These von der "Zusammensetzung" bzw. dem "Zerfall" der "Gegenwart" in die eigene "Anwesenheit" (sum), in die "Prä-existenz" des Anderen (prae-es) und in die "Abwesenheit" der Gesellschaft (abest) zu verstehen, sondern auch sein Verständnis von Ethik als "erster oder vielmehr vorgängiger Philosophie" und seine Konzeption des Verhältnisses zwischen Religion und Gesellschaft.
