The Arena Chapel in Padua was completed in 1303; Giotto, then considered the preeminent painter in Italy, was commissioned to paint it in 1306. The resulting fresco cycle, detailing the history, birth, life, and death of Christ, ranks among the greatest artworks ever created. John Ruskin helped redefine art criticism in the nineteenth century through his attention to detail, his playful and engaging prose, and the conviction with which he discussed the subjects that mattered most to him. Ruskin’s ekphrastic writing became a way for readers to approach the experience of looking at great art without actually seeing it in person. Despite having written about Giotto on numerous occasions in Stones of Venice and Modern Painters, he never treated the Arena Chapel in its own right. Here Ruskin examines the panels and brings them life, describing their many hidden details, all the result of Giotto’s unrivaled genius. As Ruskin says, “Giotto was…one of the greatest men who ever lived.” Long out of print, the Arundel Society first published Giotto and His Works in Padua between 1853 and 1860. It stands as Ruskin’s most compelling set of reflections on Giotto’s masterpiece—an artwork that, in Ruskin’s estimation, changed the very course of art history. Originally accompanied by a set of black and white woodcuts of the panels in the Chapel, this new edition presents each panel in vivid color photography, adding a useful visual aid to Ruskin’s lyrical descriptions. The result is a book that serves not only as an introduction for students of art history, but also as a discussion of what it means to be a great artist, by one of most influential writers ever to tackle visual art.

Discover the remarkable life of Giotto di Bondone...The name Giotto di Bondone may not be as well-known as Leonardo da Vinci, but it was Giotto who made da Vinci and his contemporaries of the Renaissance possible. Giotto, born in the late thirteenth century, was the first painter to escape the artistic chains of the Dark Ages and revive the natural art of Ancient Greece. Instead of creating flat, expressionless figures, as was the custom of the Middle Ages, Giotto painted characters with personalities and emotions. Since almost all art of that time was commissioned by the Church, Giotto spent his life painting magnificent frescos for churches and chapels. He became the most famous painter of his time and opened the artistic doors to the splendid Renaissance to come. "Thirty miles to the southwest of Venice, in a small park in Padua, lies a modest red brick building, the Scrovegni (or Arena) Chapel, that contains one of the jewels of Early Renaissance art: the most extensive fresco cycle by Giotto. Perfectly preserved, it established Giotto's genius for displacing the Byzantine style of painting and introducing the fundamental principles of Renaissance humanism into art. Painted around 1306, the nearly forty large frescoes that cover the walls and ceiling of the Chapel tell stories from the lives of the Virgin, Christ, and the Virgin's parents, Sts. Joachim and Anne. Created with a subtle yet brilliant array of colors - shimmering blues, golden reds, subtle ivories - these easy-to-read narrative panels have remained comprehensible and evocative to viewers for generations; this may be because, unlike much of the art that preceded Giotto, his images contain sacred figures that behave in human ways, bodies as well as faces that register human feelings familiar to us all. The Scrovegni Chapel is Giotto's masterpiece; it established him as the most famous artist of his day, not only in Italy but in all of Europe. It is little wonder that the art of Giotto has held the attention of Western civilization for over half a millennium"--Bookjacket.

This probing analysis of three works by Giotto and the patrons who commissioned them goes far beyond the clichés of Giotto as the founding figure of Western painting. It traces the interactions between Franciscan friars and powerful bankers, illuminating the complex interplay between mercantile wealth and the iconography of poverty. Political strife and religious faction lacerated fourteenth-century Italy. Giotto’s commissions are best understood against the background of this social turmoil. They reflected the demands of his patrons, the requirements of the Franciscan Order, and the restlessly inventive genius of the painter. Julian Gardner examines this important period of Giotto’s path-breaking career through works originally created for Franciscan churches: Stigmatization of Saint Francis from San Francesco at Pisa, now in the Louvre, the Bardi Chapel cycle of the Life of St. Francis in Santa Croce at Florence, and the frescoes of the crossing vault above the tomb of Saint Francis in the Lower Church of San Francesco at Assisi. These murals were executed during a twenty-year period when internal tensions divided the friars themselves and when the Order was confronted by a radical change of papal policy toward its defining vow of poverty. The Order had amassed great wealth and built ostentatious churches, alienating many Franciscans in the process and incurring the hostility of other Orders. Many elements in Giotto’s frescoes, including references to St. Peter, Florentine politics, and church architecture, were included to satisfy patrons, redefine the figure of Francis, and celebrate the dominant group within the Franciscan brotherhood.
