Art Masters is a book series by Kipepeo Publishing. # 72 - Giovanni Fattori (September 6, 1825 - August 30, 1908) was an Italian artist, one of the leaders of the group known as the Macchiaioli. He was initially a painter of historical themes and military subjects. In his middle years, inspired by the Barbizon school, he became one of the leading Italian plein-airists, painting landscapes, rural scenes, and scenes of military life. After 1884, he devoted much energy to etching.

Vers 1855, un célèbre café historique, le Caffè Michelangelo, vit l'éclosion et l'épanouissement d'un mouvement artistique qui, malgré sa courte vie, a marqué l'histoire de l'art italien. Il a fleuri et s'est éteint en l'espace d'une génération d'artistes ; tout en laissant des traces profondes sur les générations suivantes, au moins jusqu'aux premières décennies du XXe siècle. Caractéristique de ces jeunes artistes "rebelles" ôtait la tentative de dépasser l'art académique, rhétorique et commémoratif enseigné dans les académies d'art de l'époque. Ils se tournaient vers des réalités très différentes, soutenus par la ferveur du Risorgimento. Non seulement ces jeunes gens étaient animés par le désir de changer la société du point de vue culturel, mais ils portaient de fortes aspirations à la liberté et à l'égalité sociale. Dans ce groupe de jeunes artistes se détache la figure de Giovanni Fattori (Livourne, 1825 - Florence, 1908), considéré comme le représentant principal de ce courant qu'une critique hostile de l'époque gratifia du nom péjoratif de "Macchiaioli", nom qui leur est attribué dans l'histoire de l'art italien pour caractériser la période 1855-1870. Après 1870, le mouvement s'étiola, ses membres suivirent des parcours artistiques différents et les grands courants artistiques européens du Naturalisme, du Symbolisme et du Divisionnisme s'imposèrent aussi en Italie. Giovanni Fattori a manifesté un grand intérêt pour l'histoire contemporaine, immortalisant dans ses premières peintures les grandes batailles du Risorgimento. Ses thèmes de prédilection étaient la Toscane, les paysages agrestes, les hommes au travail dans les champs, les animaux attelés, la mer, la région côtière ou Maremma, avec ses gardiens de troupeaux à cheval. Dans ses superbes portraits, nous saisissons toujours une touche subtile de mélancolie, reflet de l'état d'âme de l'artiste lui-même, qui préfigure le malaise existentiel de l'homme du XXe siècle.
