Rumors. Veiled put-downs. Back-handed compliments. Sneaky attacks that are hard to pinpoint as attacks. Why do women do this to each other? If you’re looking for someone or something to blame, look no further. The culprit is our own DNA. We might be living in a modern world, but we are still driven by ancestral-era psychology, so these tactics remain with us today. In this curated collection of science-based columns from award-winning writer Amy Alkon, you’ll take a deep dive into the inner workings of female friendship, the methods women use to fight dirty, and the murky nature of the “frenemy.” What comes across as cattiness is actually evolutionary psychology at work. What appears to be an insult is mate competition in disguise. In Meangirlology, Alkon expertly guides you through the findings of renowned psychologists such as Anne Campbell, Joyce Benenson, Jaimie Arona Krems, and Tania Reynolds to help prepare you for the sneak attacks you don’t see coming from “the gentler sex.” By being aware of the evolved motivation for women to compete this way, we can spot the frenemies in our midst, deter attacks on ourselves, and be better friends to other women—and have more meaningful, satisfying female friendships.

Love And written by Jen Kim and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-13 with Family & Relationships categories.

Unique, compelling, and at times ridiculous insights and lessons from the realm of romance. Why is dating so hard? Has Disney screwed us up? How many times have you entered into a new relationship immediately convinced that this person was “the one”? At last, you’ve met the partner who will “complete you,” make you feel like all those previous terrible relationships were somehow worth it, and finally complete your fantasy rom-com happy ending—your inner Jennifer Aniston already squealing with delight. How many times has that relationship abruptly veered off course, leaving your heart the victim of yet another romantic fatality? In her first book, Love and . . . , Jen Kim turns to science to make sense of why, after three decades, she hasn’t been able to find lasting love. She puts a lens to the destructive pathology of her relationships, including her current long-term relationship with a partner who “just isn’t ready” for the next level . . . and, honestly, may never be. Will they or won’t they end up together? You’ll learn the prognosis by the final page. Love and . . . is a relationship self-help book that doesn’t want you to change, mostly because a) it’s really hard to change, and b) you probably don’t want to. Kim focuses on the science and psychology behind why we behave the way we do, reserving judgement for no one, but herself.

Coding Literacy written by Annette Vee and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Computers categories.

How the theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming in its historical, social and conceptual contexts. The message from educators, the tech community, and even politicians is clear: everyone should learn to code. To emphasize the universality and importance of computer programming, promoters of coding for everyone often invoke the concept of “literacy,” drawing parallels between reading and writing code and reading and writing text. In this book, Annette Vee examines the coding-as-literacy analogy and argues that it can be an apt rhetorical frame. The theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming beyond a technical level, and in its historical, social, and conceptual contexts. Viewing programming from the perspective of literacy and literacy from the perspective of programming, she argues, shifts our understandings of both. Computer programming becomes part of an array of communication skills important in everyday life, and literacy, augmented by programming, becomes more capacious. Vee examines the ways that programming is linked with literacy in coding literacy campaigns, considering the ideologies that accompany this coupling, and she looks at how both writing and programming encode and distribute information. She explores historical parallels between writing and programming, using the evolution of mass textual literacy to shed light on the trajectory of code from military and government infrastructure to large-scale businesses to personal use. Writing and coding were institutionalized, domesticated, and then established as a basis for literacy. Just as societies demonstrated a “literate mentality” regardless of the literate status of individuals, Vee argues, a “computational mentality” is now emerging even though coding is still a specialized skill.
