A gorgeous, full-color oversized book about educating girls across the world inspired by the documentary that Entertainment Weekly says “every mother, sister, daughter, should see, as well as the men who love and support them.” This is the right book for the present moment and perfect for fans of inspirational nonfiction such as I Am Malala and anyone who believes that one girl can change the world. Worldwide, over 130 million girls are not in school. But one girl with courage is a revolution. Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education, created a film that chronicled the stories of nine girls in the developing world, allowing viewers the opportunity to witness how education can break the cycle of poverty. Now, award-winning author Tanya Lee Stone deftly uses new research to illuminate the dramatic facts behind the film, focusing both on the girls captured on camera and many others. She examines barriers to education in depth—early child marriage and childbearing, slavery, sexual trafficking, gender discrimination, and poverty—and shows how removing these barriers means not only a better life for girls, but safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities. With full-color photos from the film, infographics, and a compelling narrative, Girl Rising will inspire readers of all ages to join together in a growing movement to help change the world. A Junior Library Guild Selection Bank Street Best Children’s Books of the Year “A moving account of hardships and triumphs that is bound to inspire future activists, this is a devastating but crucial read.” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Additional Praise for the Film: “Delivers . . . tangible hope that the world can be healed in a better future.” —Meryl Streep “Girl Rising stands as a testament to the power of information.” —The Los Angeles Times

As a child she lived in the grey world of 1950s America, hiding an internal violence encased from the outside world. She emerged into the Technicolor 1960s, emboldened, where brutality and love held awkward hands. The great and good died; the young protested racism, sexism and an unjust war. Sexuality was stripped of its cloak of inequality. The intelligent, independent Elizabeth Frakes embraced the awakening of the new times, but still held the dark secrets of her past inside. The personal and societal storm clouds expanded and merged, foreboding days and nights of turbulence, their ferocity ripping the heart out of America. Elizabeth buttoned her coat, pulled down her hat and opened the door from the darkness into the light.Girl Rising will make you laugh, cry, doubt and try. Lizzie Frakes will make you wonder and wish. This book could become a stanza in the 21st century anthem for women's rights, for those who test limits. It will take you places you might never have been otherwise. Enjoy the trip.

This enduring anthem for Black girls celebrates their power, potential, and brilliance—for themselves and for the world. You are a thousand curls unfurling in your hair. You are a thousand fists standing proudly in air. You are the song of swallows, lifting sun as they sing— breaking light with their beaks, breaking sky with their wings . . . Black girlhood is beautiful! In this deeply moving celebration and rallying cry, and in the face of the many messages that still work to convince Black girls that they should shrink themselves, hide their light, know their place, Brynne Barnes and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh reclaim that narrative: A Black girl's place is everywhere, and her selfhood is everything she can dream it to be. With poignant, poetic prose and striking, color-drenched illustrations, this empowering picture book centers the inherent worthiness and radiance of Black girls that is still far too often denied. A love letter to and for Black girls everywhere, Black Girl Rising alchemizes the sorrow and strength of the past into the brilliant gold of the future, sweeping young readers of all backgrounds into a lyrical exploration of what it means to be Black, female, and glorious.

Girl Rising is an inspirational biblical novel. It is a tale full of action, adventure, drama and fierce introspection into the nature of good and evil. Of course, as with any good drama, there are also moments of solace, warmth and tenderness. Set during that time when Christ actually walked the earth, Girl Rising follows the lives of two people. Tabitha is a beautiful young Jewish woman whose one desire is to serve God. Micah is a darkly handsome young man with a secret past who rails against the injustices in his world. For much of his life, he has been an outcast--bitter and feeling betrayed by God. Separately, Tabitha and Micah each encounter Jesus under mystifying circumstances, then never see Him again. Deeply inspired by her encounter, Tabitha sets off on a spiritual quest. When these two opposites meet, the sparks fly, igniting a fiery relationship which sets them off on an adventure filled journey of danger and self-discovery. Ironically, the understanding they seek is right before their eyes, embodied in Rachael, a cryptically precocious six year old girl. However, Micah and Tabitha keep looking outwards, to elders and the educated, for understanding. One wonders, will they ever embrace Rachael's sincere witness to Christ's redemptive power, or dismiss it as the scribes and Pharisees did?

Through the innovative methodology of asking them to record their experiences on videotape, this book offers an evocative and fascinating cross-cultural exploration into the everyday lives of a number of teenage girls from their own broad social, cultural and ethnic perspectives. The use of the video camera by the girls themselves reveals their exploration and experimentation with possible identities, highlighting their awareness that the self is not ready made but rather constituted in the process of continuous performance. The result is an active self-conscious exploration of the continuous "art" of self-making. Through their play, the teenagers are shown to strategically test out various possibilities, while keeping such explorations within the bounds of what is acceptable and permissible in their own micro-cultural worlds. The resulting material challenges previous findings in those feminist and youth anthropological studies based on too narrow a concept of class, ethnicity or populist approaches to culture.
