"They told you that you need to be thin and beautiful. They told you to wear longer skirts, avoid going out late at night, and move in groups. Wear shoes you can run in more easily than heels. Dress to flatter your apple, pear, hourglass figure, but don't look like a slut. They said if you're strong or opinionated, you'll be shrill, bossy, a ballbreaker. They said 'That's not for girls,' 'Take it as a compliment,' 'Don't rock the boat.' They told you 'Beauty is on the inside,' but you knew they didn't really mean it. Well screw that. I'm here to tell you something else. Everyday Sexism Project founder Laura Bates mocks the ludicrous pressures and stereotypes faced by young women today. Hilarious, bold, and unapologetic, Girl Up sets the record straight."--Back cover.

Already an international bestseller, this empowering survival guide provides no-nonsense advice on sex, social media, mental health, and sexism that young women face in their everyday life—from one of the emerging leaders in the feminist movement. They told you that you need to be thin and beautiful. They told you to wear longer skirts, avoid going out late at night, and move in groups—never accept drinks from a stranger, and wear shoes you can run in more easily than heels. They told you to wear just enough make-up to look presentable but not enough to be a slut; to dress to flatter your apple, pear, hourglass figure, but not to reveal too much. They warned you that if you try to be strong, or take control, you’ll be shrill, bossy, a ballbreaker. Of course it’s fine for the boys, but you should know your place. They told you “that’s not for girls”—“take it as a compliment”—“don’t rock the boat”—“that’ll go straight to your hips.” They told you “beauty is on the inside,” but you knew they didn’t really mean it. Well, screw that. Laura Bates is here to tell you something else. Hilarious, bold, and unapologetic, Girl Up exposes the truth about the pressures surrounding body image, the false representations in media, the complexities of sex and relationships, the trials of social media, and all the other lies society has told us. Praise for Girl Up “In Girl Up, Laura Bates has given women of every age a fast, frank, seductively readable guide to surviving in the time of social media, impossible body images, feminist hopes, internalizing fault, standing up for ourselves and each other, and yes, confronting Donald Trump. She leaves no doubt about what consent is, where the clitoris is, what our rights are, and what our hopes could be. This is an owner’s guide to our world and our bodies. It will definitely save sanity, and might save lives.” —Gloria Steinem “Girl Up is an essential compendium of wit, wisdom, advice, and straight-talk. They should give out copies in the delivery room every time another girl enters the world. Or a boy, for that matter—they ought to be reading Girl Up too.” —Sarah Knight, bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck "This is the book young women need—one that teaches them about the anatomy of their vulva instead of how to impress their crush. While many of the topics covered are still relevant to me now, I really wish I'd had this book as a young adult.” —Beth Newell, editor/cofounder of Reductress

Lambda Literary Award Winner! “Pen is an inspiration to anyone who’s struggled to be understood, and a vital addition to the growing world of genderqueer protagonists.” —New York Times Book Review All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she’s always been. So why does everyone have a problem with it? They think the way she looks and acts means she’s trying to be a boy—that she should quit trying to be something she’s not. If she dresses like a girl, and does what her folks want, it will show respect. If she takes orders and does what her friend Colby wants, it will show her loyalty. But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old-world parents, disintegrating friendships, and strong feelings for other girls drive Pen to see the truth—that in order to be who she truly wants to be, she’ll have to man up. M. E. They told you you need to be thin and beautiful. They told you to wear longer skirts, avoid going out late at night and move in groups - never accept drinks from a stranger, and wear shoes you can run in more easily than heels. They told you to wear just enough make-up to look presentable but not enough to be a slut; to dress to flatter your apple, pear, hourglass figure, but not to be too tarty. They warned you that if you try to be strong, or take control, you'll be shrill, bossy, a ballbreaker. Of course it's fine for the boys, but you should know your place. They told you 'that's not for girls' - 'take it as a compliment' - 'don't rock the boat' - 'that'll go straight to your hips'. They told you 'beauty is on the inside', but you knew they didn't really mean it. Well screw that. I'm here to tell you something else. Hilarious, jaunty and bold, GIRL UP exposes the truth about the pressures surrounding body image, the false representations in media, the complexities of a sex and relationships, the trials of social media and all the other lies they told us. 'Bates takes a myth-busting approach to body image, food, sex and advertising, and is particularly good at boiling down feminist language into a snappy, everyday vernacular without diluting its power.' Metro 'Essential reading for young women and girls, Girl Up is set to become a key guiding text for the next generation like The Beauty Myth and The Feminine Mystique have for preceding generations. Morning Star Online It's hardly headline news that feminism can be funny. But, heavens, is it refreshing to see it done as well as it is [in this book]. Telegraph 'Girl Up is something between a self-help book and a bracing love letter to today's teenage girls... I wish I'd had Girl Up when I was growing up. I could have used such no-nonsense survival guide.' Sunday Times 'Girl Up will be the first book on feminism many young women will read.' Guardian [Girl Up] tackles all the propaganda that women get bamboozled with from childhood. From the myth of the 'ballbreaker' in the office to the 'dangers' of short skirts, Bates is funny, piercingly astute and will have you furious and politicized over the impact social media, pornography and advertising have on our bodies.' Stylist 'If you have a daughter or a niece or a younger sister or a god-daughter, buy it for them now... the book is an absolute must for girls navigating our hyper-sexualised, deeply sexist culture.' The Pool 'Feminist writer Laura Bates returns with another hard-hitting but hilarious book which exposes the truth surrounding pressures on body image, false representations in the media and lots of issues very relevant to girls today. This no-nonsense guide to being a girl in 2016 and is one all teen girls should read.' Red magazine 'For any woman who is sick of being told how to act, how to dress, or how to ward off unwanted advances, this book could be for you. Independent 'This book is fabulous. It is inclusive and empowering. It is funny and frank and, as actor Emma Watson writes in the preface, "not for the faint-hearted". It is the kind of sex and life education you wished you had at your at your disposal when you were 14.' Irish Times

Through the innovative methodology of asking them to record their experiences on videotape, this book offers an evocative and fascinating cross-cultural exploration into the everyday lives of a number of teenage girls from their own broad social, cultural and ethnic perspectives. The use of the video camera by the girls themselves reveals their exploration and experimentation with possible identities, highlighting their awareness that the self is not ready made but rather constituted in the process of continuous performance. The result is an active self-conscious exploration of the continuous "art" of self-making. Through their play, the teenagers are shown to strategically test out various possibilities, while keeping such explorations within the bounds of what is acceptable and permissible in their own micro-cultural worlds. The resulting material challenges previous findings in those feminist and youth anthropological studies based on too narrow a concept of class, ethnicity or populist approaches to culture.

This poetry book is a huge collaboration and a living work with incredible women from all over the world meant to encourage and inspire anyone who reads it- to just- NOT GIVE UP. For this women empowerment project, I reached out to women who I thought were inspiring and asked them to submit a photo of themselves and a story about something traumatic they have overcome in their lifetime. I used their photo for the book and I turned their story into the inspiration behind the poem written next to their photo. I hope that with each poem I can inspire the women they are written for, and so many more women who might be going through something similar. You see, I always felt like I was a victim growing up. I had a really hard childhood and I had to learn to grow up early. My mother abandoned us, my father did his best but lived pay check to pay check and I just always felt so sorry for myself. One day my Bub (grandmother), sat me down and explained to me that everyone has their own story. She really broke it down to me and told me that everyone has things that they go through and grow through in their lives in order to become the person that they are meant to be. She taught me empathy. To instill it, she decided to take me to the library to read some really inspiring stories so that I didn't feel so alone. The first book I took out was a book about the life of Maya Angelou. Her story inspired me to start writing and truly helped me to become the strong person I am today. Quotes, poetry, and lyrics have always carried me through my darkest days and I do hope that with this book, we can inspire you to become a survivor instead of a victim like my Grandmother and Maya Angelou did for me. Visit us online at GirlDontGiveUp.com to submit a photo of yourself and your story to be featured in an upcoming edition of this living work.
