Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 310. This field guide describes the geology of Pleistocene glacial Lake Missoula and the Channeled Scabland of the northwestern United States. Catastrophic floods created by outbursts from this glacially dammed lake created the largest known floods on this planet. The route of this trip, shown in Figure 1, follows the path of the water from Missoula, Montana, through glacial Lake Missoula, on past the area of ice dams in Idaho, down some of the major scabland channel systems and slackwater basins in Washington, and through the Columbia River Gorge to Portland, Oregon. In 1933, the Sixteenth Session of the International Geological Congress included an excursion into the Channeled Scabland that was prepared by J Harlen Bretz of the University of Chicago. Professor Bretz's work on the Channeled Scabland covered over 40 years. Now, we meet in 1989 on the same subject to see the evidence and vindication of his work, and to examine new research on this important event in Quaternary geology.

This heavily illustrated book contains descriptions and geologic interpretations of photographs (mostly aerial) illustrating the power and magnitude of repeated Ice Age flooding in the Pacific Northwest, as recently as 14,000 years ago. The scale of Ice Age floods was so huge that today it is often difficult to see and appreciate the power and magnitude of such megafloods from ground level. However, from the air, landforms created by the floods often come into clear focus. Aerial images, obtained via unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) as well as fixed-wing airplane, add a new perspective on evidence gathered by dozens of scientists since 1923.

The Channeled Scablands Of Eastern Washington written by Paul Weis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with History categories.

A traveler entering the state of Washington from the east crosses a flat-to-rolling countryside of deep, fertile soil commonly sown with wheat. Then, abruptly, the landscape shifts to one of bare black rock cut by labyrinthine canyons and channels, plunge pools, and rock basins. The rugged terrain features cascade and cataract ledges, ragged buttes and cliffs, immense gravel bars, and giant ripple marks--the geologic legacy of the so-called Spokane Flood. Weis's concise but informative guide summarizes the sequence of ice-age events that culminated in the flood.
