Glass Fibre Reinforcements form the foundation of a composites industry with a global annual production of greater than 10 million tons of high performance, light-weight materials. Possibly the most critical component involved in the manufacture of glass fibres and their composites is the fibre surface coating (or size). Yet because of the intense level of industrial secrecy around size formulations there are very few people in the vast chain of composite materials suppliers, processors and end users who have more than a superficial understanding of these coatings. Many questions are raised about glass fibre size by this large and growing composite community. But the most frequently asked is “what is actually in the size on this glass fibre product?” There is only one source of openly available information on commercial size formulations and that is the patents of the glass fibre manufacturers. This book contains analysis of more than 500 examples of patented size formulations many of which are probably still in use in commercial glass fibre production. The information is tabulated to allow readers to easily identify the similarities and differences between the sizes and their glass fibre products developed for different composite end-use applications, different composite processing techniques, and compatibility with different polymers. Also included is a chapter discussing how patents and their associated information can be used to gain insight into which size formulations may actually be in use in glass fibre production.List of Chapter Titles• Introduction • Sizes And Sizing In Glass Fibre Production• Size Formulations In Patents• Size Patents Of Owens Corning• Size Patents Of Vetrotex• Size Patents Of PPG Fiber Glass• Size Patents From Other Companies• Glass Fibre Product Identification• Conclusions From This Review244 pages, 13 Figures, 131 Tables, 5 Appendices

Over the last forty years I have been lucky enough to have experienced a unique career researching and developing composite materials, in both industry and academia, during a time of unprecedented expansion in the global composites business. Over that time, I have been involved in areas as diverse as the development of new and novel fibre and composite products through to fundamental materials research. My research efforts have been focussed in three main areas; the fibre-matrix interface region, fibre reinforcements and in particular glass fibres, and the structure-(re)processing-performance relationships of reinforced thermoplastics. The published output of that work is collected together in this series of volumes. Glass fibres form the foundation of a composites industry with a global annual consumption of more than six million tons of reinforcement grade E-glass fibre used in the production of greater than ten million tons of high performance composites. Possibly the most critical component involved in the manufacture of glass fibres and their composites is the fibre sizing. Yet because of the intense industrial secrecy surrounding sizings there are very few people in composite material supply chain who have more than a superficial understanding their full role. The 15 papers in this volume have been arranged to reflect the three stages of my journey into glass fibre sizings. Firstly, as a researcher on the outside of the sizing veil of secrecy, then on the inside researching and developing the secrets of sizing, and finally on the outside again as a researcher and an educator about sizings.

Glass fibres are melt-spun, silica-based inorganic materials. Their main application is in glass fibre-reinforced composites, which account for more than 90% of all fibre-reinforced composites currently produced. Nevertheless, improvement of the key properties of composites remains challenging. The objective of this reprint is to focus on actual research topics related to glass fibres comprising multifunctional nanostructured surfaces, e.g., graphene, which can lead to electrically conductive fibres and their interphases in composites that are capable of uptake under a variety of mechanical, chemical, humidity, and thermal conditions for in situ sensing functions. Sizing of glass fibres help to protect the filaments from failure during processing and improves wetting and adhesion strength. Furthermore, the interphase may be varied by suppressing or promoting heterogeneous nucleation of a thermoplastic matrix and, thus, the transcrystalline layer can improve the mechanical performance. Improved interfacial shear strength was shown with chitosan as a coupling agent in phosphate glass fiber/polycaprolactone composites. Modulus mapping of plasma-synthesised interphases in glass fibre/polyester composites was used to examine the local mechanical properties across the interphase region. In addition, numerous analytical techniques were applied to investigate changes within the surface of unsized boron-free E-glass fibers after thermal conditioning at temperatures up to 700 °C.

Durability Of Composites In A Marine Environment 2 written by Peter Davies and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-18 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents selected papers from the 2nd Workshop on “Durability of Composites in a Marine Environment”, which was held in Brest, France in August 2016. Providing an overview of the state of the art in predicting the long-term durability of composite marine structures, it addresses modelling water diffusion; damage induced by water accelerated testing, including durability in design; in-service experiences; ocean energy; and offshore applications. Ensuring long-term durability is not only necessary for safety reasons, but also determines the economic viability of future marine structures, and as such, the book is essential reading for all those involved with composites in the marine industry, from initial design and calculation through to manufacture and service exploitation. It also provides information unavailable elsewhere on the mechanisms involved in degradation and how to take account of them.

Fiberglass and Glass Technology: Energy-Friendly Compositions and Applications provides a detailed overview of fiber, float and container glass technology with special emphasis on energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions, applications and manufacturing practices which have recently become available and continue to emerge. Energy-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiberglass and glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumbent compositions to reduce the viscosity and thereby the energy demand. Environmentally-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiber, float and container glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumbent compositions to reduce environmentally harmful emissions from their melts. Energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions are expected to become a key factor in the future for the fiberglass and glass industries. This book consists of two complementary sections: continuous glass fiber technology and soda-lime-silica glass technology. Important topics covered include: o Commercial and experimental compositions and products o Design of energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions o Emerging glass melting technologies including plasma melting o Fiberglass composite design and engineering o Emerging fiberglass applications and markets Fiberglass and Glass Technology: Energy-Friendly Compositions and Applications is written for researchers and engineers seeking a modern understanding of glass technology and the development of future products that are more energy- and environmentally-friendly than current products.

High Performance Fibres written by J. W. S. Hearle and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-10-26 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This important new handbook provides comprehensive coverage of how high performance fibres are designed and manufactured and covers their capabilities and applications. The high-modulus, high-tenacity (HM-HT) fibres fall naturally into three groups – polymer fibres such as aramids and polyethylene fibres; carbon fibres such as Kevlar; and inorganic fibres based on glass and ceramic fibres. The books shows how high performance fibres are being increasingly used for a wide range of applications including goetextiles and geomembranes and for construction and civil engineering projects as well as in specialist fibres within composite materials where their ability to fulfil demanding roles makes them an effective choice for the engineer and materials scientist.
