Three properties of bulk metallic glasses were investigated: (1) atomic motions; (2) characteristics of bonding and electronic states; (3) fracture. Atomic motion in glassy PdNiCuP was investigated by NMR over a wide temperature range from below the glass transition temperature Tg to above the liquidus temperature Tliq. This study reveals the temperature in the supercooled liquid region, below which motions of different elements begin to diverge. It sheds light on the nature of the crossover temperature Tc proposed by mode coupling theory. Also, hopping was shown to persist below Tg. The electronic states of various metallic glasses were studied by NMR including CuZrAl, Ce-based, and Y-based alloys. Results established some correlation between the glass forming ability and the characteristics of electronic states. This sheds light on the structure and formation of metallic glasses. Finally, we studied the fracture surfaces of various bulk metallic glasses including the brittle Mg-based bulk metallic glass. We established a clear correlation between the fracture toughness and plastic process zone size for various glasses. The results indicate that the fracture in brittle metallic glassy materials might also proceed through the local softening mechanism but at different length scales.

There has been a renaissance in glass science brought about by the development of concepts such as fragility index and the energy landscape with megabasins. Research on bulk metallic glasses has been explosive since their advent when MRS offered its first book on the topic. In 2000, a second book broadened the scope to include supercooled liquid, bulk glassy and nanocrystalline states. This book enhances the scope to include glass transition in diverse materials such as water, silicate and polymeric melts. Bringing these threads together in an interdisciplinary manner was fruitful and offers proof that while there is much common ground, gaps between various approaches to the glassy state remain to be bridged. Subjects include: the supercooled liquid; glass formability; structural relaxation and dynamics; structure determination and modeling; processing and applications of bulk metallic glasses; mechanical properties; mechanical properties - composites; crystallization; electronic and magnetic structure and properties; and nanoparticles and nonmetallic glasses.

In spite of the large amount of research activity in this subfield of materials science and engineering, there is no single book available that provides background information, methods of synthesis, characterization procedures, properties, and potential and existing applications.of bulk metallic glasses. Written in an easy-to-understand style by pioneering researchers in this field, Bulk Metallic Glasses is one of the first books to coherently discuss the synthesis, processing, properties, and applications of these unique materials. The book explores the differences between nanocrystalline, glassy, and amorphous solids as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics and various processing methods of glass formation. It critically compares the different criteria for glass formation, describes the advantages and limitations of experimental methods for synthesizing bulk metallic glasses in assorted sizes and shapes, and examines the kinetics of crystallization/devitrification and the mechanisms of transformations. It also covers the density, diffusivity, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, specific heat, viscosity, corrosion resistance, mechanical behavior, and magnetic properties of bulk metallic glasses. After presenting a wide array of applications, the book concludes with a discussion on the future of these materials. The adoption of bulk metallic glasses into existing systems is besieged by many obstacles but due to their interesting combination of properties, future applications may be unlimited. A one-stop resource on all aspects of bulk metallic glasses, this book demonstrates the immense potential of these novel materials. It clearly elucidates the background, detailed methods of synthesis and characterization, structure, and properties of bulk metallic glasses.

The mechanisms of atomic transport in the supercooled liquid state (SLS) and the nature of glass transition have been challenging problems for decades. It is believed that collective atomic motion plays a key role in the dramatic slow-down of kinetics near the glass transition temperature Tg. Thus, understanding the mechanisms of atomic transport is directly linked to the understanding of the glass forming ability of metallic alloys. Measurements on both macroscopic and microscopic scales are required for the understanding of atomic motions in SLS and glasses. We have developed a nuclear magnetic resonance technique, the Be-9 spin alignment echo technique (SAE), to probe slow atomic motions on microscopic scales. Systems of focus are Vitreloy 1 and Vitreloy 4, two of the Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be bulk metallic glasses with extraordinary glass forming ability. By combining SAE and diffusion measurements it was revealed that long-range transport of Be atoms in the SLS is due to two diffusion processes, one of these is single-atom hopping assisted by thermal fluctuation of spread-out free volume. However, collective motion of atomic clusters dominates in the SLS. Further understanding of the influence of composition and processing on such atomic motions could lead to the improvement of glass forming ability.

The usefulness of the book to the reader is exposure to many different classes of materials and relaxation phenomena. They are tied together by the universal relaxation and diffusion properties they share, and a consistent explanation of their origin. The readers can apply what they learn to solve their own problems and use it as a stepping-stone to make further advances in theoretical understanding of the origin of the universality.

Intensive efforts have been carried out over the past decade to develop means to slow down the phase transformation kinetics during the forming of metallic glasses. As a result of these efforts, some metallic glasses can now be fabricated in bulk forms (BMG) from the liquid state at cooling rates on the order of 1-10 K/s, which is close to that of conventional casting. This enables the production of bulk amorphous alloys with a thickness of (almost equal to)10 mm. While advances in amorphous metallic alloy development have been impressive, they have been made largely through experience [1]. Three main conclusions drawn from this study are: (1) Bulk metallic glasses generally have excellent mechanical formability in the supercooled liquid region. (2) Bulk metallic glasses may not be necessarily behave like a Newtonian fluid (i.e. m=1). The non-Newtonian behavior is associated with glass instability during deformation. (3) Multi-component Bulk metallic glasses can be used as the precursor of a nanocrystalline solid. However, the nanocrystalline solid is not necessarily superplastic. The non-superplastic behavior is caused by the difficult strain accommodation at grain triple junctions.
