Il Real Museo Mineralogico dell’Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II può essere un MAB in nuce, un luogo in cui coesistono archivio, biblioteca e museo; per decenni è stato condotto da un illustre mineralogista, il professore Arcangelo Scacchi, geologo e vulcanologo, che assurse anche alla carica di Rettore dell’Università per più mandati. Attraverso i documenti redatti dal direttore e alla corrispondenza intrattenuta con esponenti del mondo accademico e istituzionale e conservati con cura è possibile ricostruire non solo la storia più che bicentenaria del museo, ma anche il suo ricco patrimonio bibliografico. Soprattutto di questo, dell’intreccio di acquisti di minerali e di libri, degli studi per la conservazione e l’idea di formare una biblioteca “specializzata” ad uso dei mineralogisti e della cospicua documentazione comprata dal mineralogista per la biblioteca dell’università, l’attuale Biblioteca Universitaria di Napoli, trattano le fonti utilizzate. La trascrizione degli inediti documenti d’archivio conservati sia nell’archivio del Real Museo Mineralogico federiciano che nell’Archivio di Stato di Napoli costituisce il cuore del lavoro; soprattutto i numerosi cataloghi di libri possono illuminare sui rapporti del mondo accademico ottocentesco. Nel corso degli anni, soprattutto negli ultimi decenni, diversi studi hanno avuto come oggetto il museo di mineralogia, ma forse per la prima volta l’accento è posto sulla biblioteca.

From the mid-sixteenth century onwards, the Italian Protomedicato tribunals, Colleges of Physicians, or Health Offices (jurisdiction varied from state to state) required charlatans to submit their wares for inspection and, upon approval, pay a licence fee in order to set up a stage from which to perform and sell them. The licensing of charlatans became an administrative routine. As far as the medical magistracies were concerned, charlatans had a defineable identity, constituting a specific trade or occupation. This book studies the way charlatans were represented, by contemporaries and by historians, how they saw themselves and, most importantly, it reconstructs the place of charlatans in early modern Italy. It explores the goods and services charlatans provided, their dealings with the public and their marketing strategies. It does so from a range of perspectives: social, cultural, economic, political, geographical, biographical and, of course, medical. Charlatans are not just some curiosity on the fringes of medicine: they offered health care to an extraordinarily wide sector of the population. Moreover, from their origins in Renaissance Italy, the Italian ciarlatano was the prototype for itinerant medical practitioners throughout Europe. This book offers a different look at charlatans. It is the first to take seriously the licences issued to charlatans in the Italian states, compiling them into a 'charlatans database' of over 1,300 charlatans active throughout Italy over the course of some three centuries. In addition, it makes use of other types of archival documents, such as trial records and wills, to give the charlatans a human face, as well as a wide range of artistic and printed sources, not forgetting the output of the charlatans themselves, in the form of handbills and pamphlets.

Few illnesses in the early modern period carried the impact of the dreaded pox, a lethal sexually transmitted disease usually thought to be syphilis. In the early sixteenth century the disease quickly emerged as a powerful cultural force. Just as powerful were the responses of doctors, bureaucrats, moralists, playwrights, and satirists. These ten essays gauge the impact of sexual disease on early modern society by exploring the ways in which European culture reacted to the presence of a new deadly sexual infection. Articles about scientific and medical responses analyze how physicians incorporated the disease within existing intellectual frameworks. Studies in literary and metaphoric responses examine how early modern writers put images of sexual infection and the diseased body to a range of rhetorical and political uses. Finally, essays about institutional and policing responses chronicle how authorities responded to the crisis and how these public health responses linked up with wider campaigns to police sexuality.

La Società Napoletana di Storia Patria fu creata nel 1875 per volontà di alcuni politici e studiosi napoletani, mutuando la sua struttura dalle società storiche già sorte. Come gli altri istituti italiani, anche il sodalizio napoletano ebbe come primari interessi l’edizione di fonti, la difesa della propria autonomia, il tentativo di conciliare piccola e grande patria. Lo scopo era duplice: rafforzare il legame tra la popolazione e la dinastia sabauda ed evidenziare, tramite le memorie locali, il contributo dato al processo di nation building. Attraverso la ricostruzione biografica di alcuni membri della società storica napoletana, si comprende bene che nulla di ciò che accadeva in città era lontano dall’istituto: dal controllo dell’istruzione pubblica alla tutela dei monumenti, all’amministrazione degli enti di beneficenza. Pur essendoci già prestigiosi cenacoli culturali, la società storica seppe creare infatti un’ampia rete di rapporti, grazie anche al numero aperto delle iscrizioni e a una quota associativa tutto sommato accessibile. Le vicende di questo istituto, qui ricostruite dall’anno di fondazione al 1946 attraverso fonti documentarie inedite e una ricca bibliografia, si rivelano pertanto utili per chi voglia conoscere da vicino le dinamiche culturali del Mezzogiorno continentale all’indomani dell’Unità.
