Le infrazioni alle regole del canone sono proprio quelle forze centrifughe che danno alla letteratura il suo aspetto proteiforme, la costringono, tramite gli strumenti della satira, della parodia, del grottesco, ad evolversi. Si pensi già ai più irriverenti esperimenti di parodia medievale e alle dissacrazioni religiose, così come alle oscenità dei vituperia e delle tenzoni poetiche; altre volte invece l'eversione è gioco dissacrante, è il gratuito piacere dell'assurdo o delle infrazioni linguistiche o metriche: le frottole o la poesia del nonsenso. Naturalmente sono implicati anche gli "antigeneri", e irregolare è certo quella poesia che Croce ha chiamato "dialettale riflessa", più specificamente macaronica e dialettale pavana (Folengo e Ruzzante), ma anche napoletana, bolognese, lombarda, romanesca, ecc., che, in qualche modo, si protrae fino a Gadda. In questa prospettiva si pone il Convegno promosso - nel quadro delle proprie attività istituzionali - dal Centro Pio Rajna per il 2005, con la partecipazione di alcuni tra i maggiori studiosi italiani e stranieri.

This book deals with a topic that is gaining increasing critical attention, the literature of nonsense and absurdity. The volume gathers together twenty-one essays on various aspects of literary nonsense, according to criteria that are deliberately inclusive and eclectic. Its purpose is to offer a gallery of “nonsense practices” in literature across periods and countries, in the conviction that important critical insights can be gained from these juxtapositions. Most of the cases presented here deal with linguistic nonsense, but in a few instances the nonsense operates at the higher level of the interpretation of reality on the part of the subject—or of the impossibility thereof. The contributors to the volume are established and younger scholars from various countries. Chronologically, the chapters range widely from Dante to Václav Havel, and offer a large span of national literatures (Czech, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese) and literary genres (poetry, prose, and drama), inviting the readers to trace their own pathway and draw their own lines of connection. One point that emerges with particular force is the notion that what distinguishes literary nonsense is its somehow “regulated” nature. Literary nonsense thus sounds like a deliberate, last-ditch attempt to snatch order from the jaws of chaos—the speech of the “Fool” as opposed to the tale told by an idiot. It is this kind of post-Derridean retrieval of choice as the defining element in semantic transactions which is perhaps the most significant insight bequeathed by the study of nonsense to the analysis of poetry and literature in general.

Si l'on se penche sur les phénomènes de contestation de l'autorité politique par la littérature ou les arts qui constitue un axe de recherche majeur du Laboratoire aux travaux duquel contribue ce volume, il appert que, dans bien des pays d'Europe, l'autorité politique s'est identifiée avec celle du Monarque, alors qu'en Italie, cas exceptionnel – et pour cause, puisque le siège de la papauté y est implanté depuis deux millénaires sans autre interruption que le demi-siècle avignonnais –, c'est la papauté qui s'est constituée en pouvoir politique, se revendiquant d'une double autorité, spirituelle et morale, et s'incarnant en un véritable organisme étatique. Le pape et la papauté représentent à leur tour deux "incarnations" de l'autorité : l'une institutionnelle (le gouvernement ecclésiastique), l'autre individuelle (le souverain pontife comme successeur de Pierre investi d'une mission de divine inspiration et exerçant à ce titre une autorité suprême). C'est en tout cas une spécificité italienne que d'être, par tant, un pays à la fois laïc et non-laïc, dans lequel la figure du Pape remplace celle du Roi, suscitant, depuis son affirmation comme telle, polémiques et défenses de l'Institution ecclésiale autant que de papes en particuliers. De fait, l'affirmation de la primauté spirituelle et temporelle du pape sur le monde médiéval chrétien présente, in nuce, les failles juridiques et morales qui légitiment l'expression immédiate d'opposants à cette hégémonie, aussi les vingt études regroupées dans ce volume illustrent-elles à la fois l'ancrage et la permanence d'une tradition historique, artistique, littéraire… la remise en cause en quelque sorte "chronique" du pouvoir du pape et de l'Église du XIe siècle à nos jours. Chacune d'elles montre par ailleurs, en creux ou explicitement, selon les cas, l'idéal d'une Église, d'une papauté et de papes, que leurs partisans comme leurs opposants eussent voulus au-dessus des intérêts matériels et des stratégies de pouvoir, tous se présentant en mal d'une autorité morale incontestable et littéralement incomparable (celle des "Princes" telle qu'elle ressort de ces travaux n'échappant pas non plus à une sévère critique). Dans le balayage temporel et thématique qu'elles effectuent, ces études, du même coup, rendent compte du paradoxe proprement italien d'une tension ancestrale et originale entre la religion de la politique et la politique de la religion.

Le opere proposte in questo volume ricostruiscono a vari livelli il percorso culturale dell’Aretino fino al 1534: la prima redazione della Cortigiana (1525), commedia che mette in scena una divertita rappresentazione icastica della Roma vivace e colorita dei papi medicei; l’Opera nova (1512), raccolta “scolastica” di versi in linea col fortunato filone della lirica tardo-quattrocentesca, qui riproposta in edizione integrale, e il Pronostico del 1534, che tramanda sferzanti giudizi satirici contro il papa e l’imperatore, coinvolgendo i principi e i regnanti di mezza Europa. L’Appendice contiene due scritti burleschi, il Testamento dell’Elefante (1516) e la Farza (1519-1521), tradizionalmente attribuiti all’Aretino: operette godibili e ingiustamente dimenticate la cui pubblicazione conserva il sapore di una riscoperta letteraria e storica.

Dante's Comedy and the Ethics of Invective in Medieval Italy proposes a new approach to invective and comic poetry in Italy during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and opens the way for an innovative understanding of Dante’s masterpiece. The Middle Ages in Italy offer a wealth of vernacular poetic invectives—polemical verses aimed at blaming specific wrongdoings of an individual, group, city or institution— that are both understudied and rarely juxtaposed. No study has yet provided a scholarly examination of the connection between this medieval invective tradition, and its elements of humor, derision, and reprehension in Dante’s Comedy. This book argues that these comic texts are rooted in and actively engaged with the social, political, and religious conflicts of their time. Political invective has a dynamic ethical orientation that is mediated by a humor that disarms excessive hostility against its individual targets, providing an opening for dialogue. While exploring medieval comic poems by Rustico Filippi (from Florence), Cecco Angiolieri (from Siena), and Folgore da San Gimignano, this study unveils new biographical data about these poets retrieved from Italian state archives (most of these data are published here in English for the very first time), and ultimately shows what the medieval invective tradition can add to our understanding of Dante’s Comedy.

In una lettera del 1903, Vilfredo Pareto esortava Giuseppe Prezzolini a seguire la tradizione del «Fanfulla», «ai bei tempi [...] del Collodi». Quel Collodi uomo del Risorgimento tutto d’un pezzo e grande scrittore, intellettuale libero e temuto per l’indipendenza del pensiero, che aveva individuato alcuni temi cruciali della realtà politica e sociale della nuova Italia. E ancora ci riguarda. A questo la scelta di articoli di satira politica, raccolti nel presente volume, intende dare risalto. Il lettore sarà colpito dall’acume e dalla lungimiranza con cui Collodi, più di un secolo fa, metteva in satira gli Italiani: l’inerzia, i vizi di una borghesia – chiusa nei propri individualismi, privilegi, tornaconti – e il malcostume di certi politici che, difettando di senso dello Stato, venivano meno alle responsabilità di governo. Trattando problemi della sua epoca e cogliendo la complessità e durata dei nodi storico-sociali da essi rappresentata, da cronista Collodi parla della nostra Italia di oggi e da scrittore consegna un lascito prezioso: la cultura della letteratura totale.
