Essays collected in this volume deal with various problems from the philosophy of mathematics. What connects them are two questions: how mathematics is created and how it is acquired. In 'Three Worlds of Mathematics' we are familiarized with David Tall's ideas pertaining to the embodied, symbolic and formal worlds of mathematics. In 'Basic Ideas of Intuitionism', we focus on an epistemological approach to mathematics which is distinctive to constructive mathematics. The author focuses on the computational content of intuitionistic logic and shows how it relates to functional programming. 'The Brave Mathematical Ant' carefully selects mathematical puzzles related to teaching experiences in a way that the solution requires creativity and is not obtainable by following an algorithm. Moreover the solution gives us some new insight into the underlying idea. 'Degrees Of Accessibility Of Mathematical Objects' discusses various criteria which can be used to judge accessibility of mathematical objects. We find logical complexity, range of applications, existence of a physical model as well as aesthetic values.

Glimpses Into Primary School Teacher Education In South Africa written by Sarah Gravett and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-05 with Education categories.

This book explores the current landscape of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in primary schools in South Africa. Considering recent policy directives and initiatives, it highlights the dilemmas of ITE for the primary school and gives a thorough account of innovations and initiatives to improve ITE. The book presents what works best for quality preparation of teachers in the Global South, where many children rely on their teachers and school life to break the cycle of poverty. Chapters draw on evidence from workplace learning, pre-service study, and primary school teacher education policy to highlight examples of promising change in teacher education in South Africa, addressing the clichés of "theory versus practice" head-on. This book successfully brings out the challenging aspects of teacher education for childhood learning which has otherwise been regarded as the softer option for a career in education. This book will be of great interest for academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of teacher education, African education, educational policy, international education, and comparative education.

Humanizing Mathematics And Its Philosophy written by Bharath Sriraman and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-07 with Mathematics categories.

This Festschrift contains numerous colorful and eclectic essays from well-known mathematicians, philosophers, logicians, and linguists celebrating the 90th birthday of Reuben Hersh. The essays offer, in part, attempts to answer the following questions set forth by Reuben himself as a focus for this volume: Can practicing mathematicians, as such, contribute anything to the philosophy of math? Can or should philosophers of math, as such, say anything to practicing mathematicians? Twenty or fifty years from now, what will be similar, and what will, or could, or should be altogether different: About the philosophy of math? About math education? About math research institutions? About data processing and scientific computing? The essays also offer glimpses into Reuben’s fertile mind and his lasting influence on the mathematical community, as well as revealing the diverse roots, obstacles and philosophical dispositions that characterize the working lives of mathematicians. With contributions from a veritable “who’s who” list of 20th century luminaries from mathematics and philosophy, as well as from Reuben himself, this volume will appeal to a wide variety of readers from curious undergraduates to prominent mathematicians.

Amongst Mathematicians written by Elena Nardi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Education categories.

This book offers a unique perspective on ways in which mathematicians: perceive their students' learning; teach; reflect on their teaching practice. Elena Nardi achieves this by employing two fictional, yet entirely data-grounded, characters to create a conversation on these important issues. The construction of these characters is based on large bodies of data including intense focused group interviews with mathematicians and extensive analyses of students' written work, collected and analyzed over a substantial period.

“Mathematics in Everyday Life -The hidden Language of the World” is a textbook for Undergraduate and Post Graduate students to develop problem solving skills with the advent of logical thinking. Here the authors’ objective is how mathematics will be useful in the fields we come across in Science, Economics, Engineering and Technology by keeping the syllabi of various prestigious universities. The major subfields it covers Mathematical modeling, model theory, proof theory, set theory, recursion theory, Financial Mathematics, Statistics and probability in decision-making, Mathematics in Technology and Communication Engineering etc.,. It also useful in Cryptography and Encryption, Algorithm and coding development. Here the authors were focused on mathematical theory which is a mathematical model of a branch of mathematics that is based on a set of axioms and they emphasized, it can also concurrently be a body of knowledge. This textbook has been written with great effort made by referring text books written on the modern trend of Applicable Mathematics. The topics covered in this book are practical for a scholar who starts learning education in Economics, Sciences ,Technology & Engineering fields.. The mathematical concepts are written from the basic level to reach out to a wide range of student fraternities and teachers in every walk of life more particularly in industrial-related challenging problems

During his years working as an instructional coach for a national network of schools, Geoff Krall had the chance to witness several inspirational moments when math class comes alive for middle or high school students--when it is challenging but also fun, creative, and interactive. In Necessary Conditions: Teaching Secondary Math with Academic Safety, Quality Tasks, and Effective Facilitation, Krall documents the essential ingredients that produce these sorts of moments on a regular basis and for all students. They are Academic Safety, Quality Tasks, and Effective Facilitation. Academic Safety: Krall implements equitable classroom experiences that help fight stigmas associated with race and gender in schools. This allows students to feel socially and emotionally secure while nurturing their identities as mathematicians and increasing engagement during classroom discussions Quality Tasks: Teachers can adapt or create dynamic, student-centered lessons that break down math into small, manageable sections, removing the frustrations felt by students who aren't considered math people Effective Facilitation: This book shows how to incorporate teaching moves and math routines designed for engagement, persistence, and interactivity. Teachers can allow students to explore safely while maintaining consistent classroom expectations My work as a math instructional coach for a network of schools has afforded me the unique opportunity to visit exceptional teachers across the country, documenting their tasks, teaching moves, and academically safe learning environments. You'll experience dispatches from these effective classrooms in which we'll observe how teachers attend to all three elements that make up the ecosystem. -- Geoff Krall from his book, Necessary Conditions

This book presents a printed testimony for the fact that George Andrews, one of the world’s leading experts in partitions and q-series for the last several decades, has passed the milestone age of 80. To honor George Andrews on this occasion, the conference “Combinatory Analysis 2018” was organized at the Pennsylvania State University from June 21 to 24, 2018. This volume comprises the original articles from the Special Issue “Combinatory Analysis 2018 – In Honor of George Andrews’ 80th Birthday” resulting from the conference and published in Annals of Combinatorics. In addition to the 37 articles of the Andrews 80 Special Issue, the book includes two new papers. These research contributions explore new grounds and present new achievements, research trends, and problems in the area. The volume is complemented by three special personal contributions: “The Worlds of George Andrews, a daughter’s take” by Amy Alznauer, “My association and collaboration with George Andrews” by Krishna Alladi, and “Ramanujan, his Lost Notebook, its importance” by Bruce Berndt. Another aspect which gives this Andrews volume a truly unique character is the “Photos” collection. In addition to pictures taken at “Combinatory Analysis 2018”, the editors selected a variety of photos, many of them not available elsewhere: “Andrews in Austria”, “Andrews in China”, “Andrews in Florida”, “Andrews in Illinois”, and “Andrews in India”. This volume will be of interest to researchers, PhD students, and interested practitioners working in the area of Combinatory Analysis, q-Series, and related fields.
