The dawn of the twenty-first century has been accompanied by an upsurge of anti-capitalist campaigning, challenging the very basis of the New World Economic order. Dramatic events such as the protests from Seattle to Genoa, have captured media headlines. But media headlines leave key questions unanswered, questions about the ultimate significance of the challenges posed by global social movements and the development of civil society, both South and North. This book sets out to explore the lessons from these experiences of social mobilisation. How can non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and the labour and trade union movement develop effective campaigning alliances – without becoming institutionalised and incorporated themselves? How can they maintain an effective balance between winning immediate gains without losing sight of longer-term strategies for transformation? How can they work with celebrities to gain media attention -- without losing control of the message? And how can social movements develop organisational forms that are genuinely representative and democratically accountable, globally? Much ink has been spilled on poverty measurements and trends, at the expense of revealing causality. Assembling multi-disciplinary and international contributions, this book shows that a causal understanding of poverty in rich and poor countries is essential. That understanding must be based on a critical interrogation of the wider social relations which set up the mechanisms producing poverty as an outcome. Processes that widen/strengthen crisis-ridden market relations, that increase income/wealth inequality, and that ‘enhance’ the policy-biases of nation-states and international institutions toward the affluent-propertied strata cause global poverty and undermine poor people’s political power. The processes concentrating wealth-creation are poverty-causing processes. Tracing the history of isolationist and internationalist ideas from the 1890s through the 1930s, Nichols reveals unexpected connections among individuals and groups from across the political spectrum who developed new visions for America’s place in the world. From Henry Cabot Lodge and William James to W. E. B. Du Bois and Jane Addams to Randolph Bourne, William Borah, and Emily Balch, Nichols shows how reformers, thinkers, and politicians confronted the challenges of modern society—and then grappled with urgent pressures to balance domestic priorities and foreign commitments. This book examines the sovereignty paradox in the Global South within the context of the Russia-Ukraine war. It illustrates the contradiction that countries which helped establish the post-World War II norm of "equal sovereignty"—entitling all nations to the same respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity as the West—are reluctant to publicly condemn Russia’s infringement on Ukraine’s sovereignty. The chapters in this volume further highlight the Global South’s duplicity because the Global South has been extremely critical of the US-led West for violating the United Nations Charter, international law and compromising on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the Global South. Through the analysis of nine countries, the contributions discuss each nation’s foreign policy tenets and how they have been violated in their stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and the justifications for such deviations. It also illustrates that “cherry picking” is the norm that states have adopted in employing the concept of sovereignty and this is likely to continue in the future. This book will be of interest to students, scholars, analysts, and policymakers in the fields of international relations, political science, geopolitics, and Global South studies.
