As Africans and descendants of slaves have sought to expand an understanding of their history, focus on the African diaspora--the global dispersal of a people and their culture--has increased. African studies have assumed a prominent place in historical scholarship, and a growing number of non-African scholars has helped revise a discipline established over several decades. The six contributions in this volume were compiled as a result of the thirtieth Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lecture held at the University of Texas at Arlington. The contributors, nationally recognized in the field, represent a collaborative analysis of the African diaspora from African and non-African perspectives. Joseph E. Harris discusses how the African diaspora influences the economies, politics, and social dynamics of both the homeland and the host country. Alusine Jalloh reconstructs the mercantile activities of the Fula in colonial Sierra Leone. Joseph E. Inikori argues that slavery and serfdom in medieval Europe provide greater insights into precolonial Africa than do standard New World comparisons. Colin A. Palmer examines the power relationships that undergirded American slavery in order to better understand the enslaved. Douglas B. Chambers reveals the enduring influence of Africanisms in the historical development of Afro-Virginian slave culture. And Dale T. Graden looks at African slavery in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil between 1848 and 1856, focusing on the Bahian elite and their response to slave resistance.

This Element is an analysis of the African Diaspora. It will define the African Diaspora and how the concepts behind the term came to be socially and historically engineered. The African diaspora is then placed into a broader historical context where the diverse, global, and overlapping histories of Africa's ancient-ongoing diasporas will be explored. In particular, themes of injustice, agency, resistance, and diversity (regarding people, diasporas, and experiences) will feature heavily. Through this exploration, this Element will interrogate dominating narratives regarding African diaspora-related discourse, seeking to address prevailing ideas that inadequately capture the true complexity and nuance of the subject. It does so to construct a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter while lining out a more holistic approach to thinking about the very nature of 'diaspora.' Global Circuits of Blackness is a sophisticated analysis of the interlocking diasporic connections between Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas. A diverse and gifted group of scholars delve into the contradictions of diasporic identity by examining at close range the encounters of different forms of blackness converging on the global scene. Contributors examine the many ways blacks have been misrecognized in a variety of contexts. They also explore how, as a direct result of transnational networking and processes of friction, blacks have deployed diasporic consciousness to interpellate forms of white supremacy that have naturalized black inferiority, inhumanity, and abjection. This anthology presents a new study of the worldwide African diaspora by bringing together diverse, multidisciplinary scholarship to address the connectedness of Black subject identities, experiences, issues, themes, and topics, applying them dynamically to diverse locations of the Blackworld—Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States. The book underscores three dimensions of African diaspora study. European colonization of Africans in the late 1800s replaced European enslavement of Africans from the 1450s to the 1870s. Colonization and enslavement were two sides of the same coin. Both were involuntary. In both the European was the master and beneficiary and the African the enslaved and exploited. Barely half a century after European decolonization of Africa, new voluntary wave upon waves of African migration have reached global dimensions. The agency of change seems to have shifted from Europeans to Africans. “Bushfallers” is the Cameroonian designation for this new African agents of change—the restless-young unemployed and unemployable at home, who migrate abroad in search of greener pastures. Cast within the context of defining moments in the political history of contemporary Cameroon, The New African Diaspora... draws from the colonial experiences that predated the emergence of decolonized Cameroon and offers glimpses into the impact of neocolonialism on the existing situation and analyzes how bushfallers are struggling to navigate through the confining tempest by venturing outward in preparation for executing the role that history seems to have pre-determined and designed for them. What will become of Cameroon’s bushfallers when after having exhausted their energies “bushfalling” abroad decide to turn their attention to politics at home? It is toward this end that Konde rises to the apex of originality by prescribing “DISDEFORG” in the Postlude—a “Three-Ds’ and One-O” formula for achieving success consisting of four principles: Discipline, Discovery, Definition, and Organization.
