The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a rich source of information that can be used by a broad range of stakeholders to promote discussions and actions to improve K-12 mathematics and science teaching and learning. To support educators, administrators, parents, and others interested in education in using TIMSS materials, the National Research Council (NRC) has prepared a report, Global Perspectives for Local Action: Using TIMSS to Improve U.S. Mathematics and Science Education (see "Resources"). This report will help educators, administrators, parents and others interested in education to understand what can be learned from TIMSS findings, and it will encourage them to use the information to make improvements in mathematics and science education. Provided in the report are insights into mathematics and science achievement, curriculum, instruction, and school support systems, such as professional development, in the United States and around the world. To make TIMSS information more accessible and useful to educators and the public, the NRC prepared this professional development guide to accompany its report. This guide provides directions and support materials for leading workshops and planning sessions for teachers, educational administrators, higher education faculty, and the interested public.

By the end of this course, students will not only understand the crucial importance of the environment in human life but will also be equipped with the strategies to address the pressing environmental issues that threaten our planet. Throughout this book, I have made an effort to cover the major facets of Environmental Education, which include a clear definition of environment, the relationship between humans and the environment, and human impact on ecological systems. The book also explores significant environmental movements and projects such as the Chipko Movement, the Silent Valley Project, and the Narmada Valley Project, illustrating how communities and governments have responded to environmental challenges. The book further engages with environmental ethics and sustainable development, encouraging students to reflect on the moral aspects of environmental protection and consider the long-term impacts of their actions on future generations. Environmental Education is not merely a subject to be studied; it is a call to action. The information presented here aims to guide students in critically assessing the current state of the environment and to provide them with the knowledge required to make informed decisions that can benefit both society and the planet. As they examine environmental hazards and pollution, students are encouraged to reflect on the roles they can play in mitigating environmental degradation and promoting sustainability in their communities and beyond. Incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum, this book highlights the significance of goals such as Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy), Goal 12 (Responsible consumption and production), and Goal 13 (Climate action). This book, The Kyoto Post-COVID Manifesto for Global Economics (KM-PC), is a sequel to our 2018 book, The Kyoto Manifesto for Global Economics (KM-I, 2018). It further exposes the failures of a global economic regime that, based on self-interest, has led to the enormously unequal and fragmented society of today and our decreased ability to respond and recover from the critical worldwide consequences of such a regime over time — notably, climate change. At stake is our very survival beyond the twenty-first century. The fundamental tenet of this book is that our power to heal our currently fractured society lies in the depth of our humanity — in our shared human spirit and spirituality. What is sacred or of imperishable supreme value is what we can be as a human race: empowered, fulfilled individuals, living in harmony, deeply sharing and caring for one another and the environment that sustains us across our distinct cultures and worlds in which we live. Thus, the norms in our economic relations do not have to be those of self-interest that separates us, the ever-watchful distrust represented by “the deal” and immediate economic advantage for me. Instead, we can build an economic frame for our society based on mindfulness, care, mutual human benefit, and trust — on our shared humanity. Our argument was complete and we were ready to publish. But then, suddenly, from the dawning of 2020, everything changed. COVID-19 invaded and the world as we knew it simply stopped. No one saw it coming. As authors, we waited to watch and seek to understand. The result is that the book captures the COVID trauma and, against the fractures based on self-interest already visible in today’s society, assesses the impact of COVID-19 now and for the future. Focusing on a humanity-based economics is even more important now, and this book shows why.
