The Thorium Energy Conference (ThEC13) gathered some of the world’s leading experts on thorium technologies to review the possibility of destroying nuclear waste in the short term, and replacing the uranium fuel cycle in nuclear systems with the thorium fuel cycle in the long term. The ThEC13 proceedings are a source of reference on the use of thorium for energy generation. They offer detailed technical reviews of the status of thorium energy technologies, from basic R&D to industrial developments. They also describe how thorium can be used in critical reactors and in subcritical accelerator-driven systems (ADS), answering the important questions: – Why is thorium so attractive and what is the role of innovation, in particular in the nuclear energy domain? – What are the national and international R&D programs on thorium technologies and how are they progressing? "This book describes the coming chaos that will result in the year 2100 if the world fails to develop a workable nuclear breeder reactor. In 2100, the world will be depleted of all but the most expensive oil, gas and coal. The world will also be largely depleted of the uranium that is used in conventional nuclear reactors. The result will be a shutdown of the world electric grid and a shutdown of all vehicular traffic. In 2100, the world will have an estimated population of 11 billion people. By 2150, the population of the world will plummet to 3 billion people if something is not done soon. In order to have a seamless transition into the 22nd century, the world must make a concerted effort today to develop nuclear breeder reactors to keep the world electric grid functioning in 2100. The most likely candidate appears to be the Molten Salt breeder reactor, also known as the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor. With nuclear breeder reactors, the world will have electric vehicles at their disposal. However, for long distance travel, the world must continue development of ammonia-fueled vehicles. The best candidate appears to be a prototype hybrid electric-ammonia fueled vehicle that is being promoted by the South Koreans. By 2100, the carbon dioxide in the world's atmosphere will increase by over 3 trillion tons. This is inevitable without change. It will result in temperatures approximately 6 degrees higher (3.5° C) than today. Virtually all the glaciers of the world, except in the Himalayas, will completely melt, which will devastate agriculture in the Far East. The world's oceans will rise by about 5.9 feet in 2100, which will inundate over 100 million homes and play havoc with the coastal cities of the world. All of this can be ameliorated if the world limits the use of fossil fuels in favor of ammonia fuels and switches to the use of nuclear breeder reactors."--Back cover.

This book focuses on the Gordian knot of our time, the closely coupled problems of electricity poverty for billions of humans, and global warming for all humans. The central thesis of the book is that nuclear power is not only the only solution, it is a highly desirable solution, cheaper, safer, less intrusive on nature than all the alternatives. Just about everybody, including most pro-nuclear folks, accept the fact that nuclear electricity is inherently expensive. Nuclear power is not inherently expensive. It is inherently cheap. This book argues that conventional nuclear power should cost less than three cents per kilowatt hour. But nuclear power is expensive, prohibitively so in most parts of the planet. The reason why nuclear power is so expensive is a regulatory regime in which the regulator is mandated to increase costs to the point where nuclear power is at best barely economic. The operative buzzword is ALARA, As Low As Reasonably Achievable. In such a system, any technological improvement which should lower cost simply provides regulators with more room to drive costs up. This same regime does an excellent job of stifling competition and technological progress by erecting layers of barriers to entry. The goal is not just to make nuclear electricity as cheap as coal or gas fired electricity. The goal must be to keep pushing the cost of nuclear power down and down, allowing us to replace fossil fuels almost everywhere. Imagine what we could do with 2 cents per kWh power in electrifying transportation and producing carbon neutral synfuels. This can only be done in a harshly competitive environment. We must force the providers of nuclear power to compete with everybody. If nuclear power is to be allowed to cleave the Gordian knot of electricity poverty and global warming, then we must completely change the way we regulate nuclear electricity. This book makes the case for this change and outlines what the replacement system needs to look like. ~
