***Updated and Revised 2019*** Author Richard S. Dillon tackles the divisive subject of global warming in his new book, Scientific Facts and Climate Change. Readers will gain a better understanding of key climate change concepts-like what scientists mean when they discuss the "greenhouse effect" and how to differentiate between "good" and "bad" science- in easy-to-read terms. Dillon tackles a broad range of concepts, exploring why carbon dioxide is not an "effective" greenhouse gas, how the way in which the solubility of carbon dioxide may explain the relationship between it and water temperature, and how carbon dioxide absorbs infrared radiation by bending and stretching the oxygen-carbon bonds. Dillon also dissects the various reports of global weather-related disasters, including recent worldwide hurricanes, floods, and droughts, to determine their root causes and better focus climate debate. No factor is too big or small to be considered in Scientific Facts and Climate Change. Looking outward and upward, Dillon even examines the effect of the sun and cosmos on the global climate, drawing a correlation between the number of sunspots and major weather patterns seen in the past. Ready to reconsider the world around you? This eye-opening look at climate change is a great place to start.

Now that the Bush Administration has kiboshed the Kyoto Protocol, are efforts to curtail global warming dead? Are even more technical studies called for? The issue of global warming would appear to be one which will force pollution control even before the public will need to walk around with gas masks as part of their daily attire. Such controls, however, will require a gutsy administration in Washington which may not surface in the short run. This new book brings presents the issues of global climate change in a crystal clear manner leaving no doubt that a crisis is enveloping the world.

We are at the terminal point of the warm interglacial period, and the next glacial age may anytime start. The first step of the global cooling is predicted by the author to come in 2035, when the food production will surely decrease. The population is expanding and the shortage of food and drain of natural resources result in the limits to the growth of the human society. It was predicted by the Rome Club (1972) that The Limits to Growth would come in 2020. All these conditions together corroborate to bring a severe crisis to human beings in near future. If the earth would be meeting warming in near future as predicted by IPCC, then the crisis would be mild. However, it is not the case. The atmospheric temperature of the earth will surely become cold, because most of major controlling factors of the atmospheric temperature, i.e., solar activity, cosmic rays, and geomagnetism are changing in a way to the cooling. The effect of carbon dioxide gas only cannot be too much evaluated. The effort of decreasing carbon dioxide gas is important in the sustainability of our limited resources, however, we have to seriously consider the measures for the approaching crisis of global cooling and the limits to growth.

Climate Change: Evidence and Causes is a jointly produced publication of The US National Academy of Sciences and The Royal Society. Written by a UK-US team of leading climate scientists and reviewed by climate scientists and others, the publication is intended as a brief, readable reference document for decision makers, policy makers, educators, and other individuals seeking authoritative information on the some of the questions that continue to be asked. Climate Change makes clear what is well-established and where understanding is still developing. It echoes and builds upon the long history of climate-related work from both national academies, as well as on the newest climate-change assessment from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It touches on current areas of active debate and ongoing research, such as the link between ocean heat content and the rate of warming.

Although the world’s climate has undergone many cyclical changes, the phrase ‘climate change’ has taken on a sinister meaning, implying catastrophe for humanity, ecology and the environment. We are told that we are responsible for this threat, and that we should act immediately to prevent it. But the apparent scientific consensus over the causes and effects of climate change is not what it appears. Chill is a critical survey of the subject by a committed environmentalist and scientist. Based on extensive research, it reveals a disturbing collusion of interests responsible for creating a distorted understanding of changes in global climate. Scientific institutions, basing their work on critically flawed computer simulations and models, have gained influence and funding. In return they have allowed themselves to be directed by the needs of politicians and lobbyists for simple answers, slogans and targets. The resulting policy - a 60% reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050 - would have a huge, almost unimaginable, impact upon landscape, community and biodiversity. On the basis of his studies of satellite data, cloud cover, ocean and solar cycles, Peter Taylor concludes that the main driver of recent global warming has been an unprecedented combination of natural events. His investigations indicate that the current threat facing humanity is a period of global cooling, comparable in severity to the Little Ice Age of 1400-1700 AD. The risks of such cooling are potentially greater than global warming and on a more immediate time scale, with the possibility of failing harvests leaving hundreds of millions vulnerable to famine. Drawing on his experience of energy policy and sustainability, Taylor suggests practical steps that should be taken now. He urges a shift away from mistaken policies that attempt to avert inevitable natural changes, to an adaptation to a climate that is likely overall to turn significantly cooler.

Climate Change written by Edmond A. Mathez and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-08 with Science categories.

Climate Change is geared toward a variety of students and general readers who seek the real science behind global warming. Exquisitely illustrated, the text introduces the basic science underlying both the natural progress of climate change and the effect of human activity on the deteriorating health of our planet. Noted expert and author Edmond A. Mathez synthesizes the work of leading scholars in climatology and related fields, and he concludes with an extensive chapter on energy production, anchoring this volume in economic and technological realities and suggesting ways to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Climate Change opens with the climate system fundamentals: the workings of the atmosphere and ocean, their chemical interactions via the carbon cycle, and the scientific framework for understanding climate change. Mathez then brings the climate of the past to bear on our present predicament, highlighting the importance of paleoclimatology in understanding the current climate system. Subsequent chapters explore the changes already occurring around us and their implications for the future. In a special feature, Jason E. Smerdon, associate research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, provides an innovative appendix for students.

The theory of the Earth's climate evolution based on universal chemical-physical laws of matter-energy transformation is presented in the book. It shows how the process of Earth's core separation has led to formation and evolution of the hydrosphere and atmosphere. Having analyzed the processes of heat transfer in the atmosphere, the writers developed the adiabatic theory of the greenhouse effect, which was applied for analysis of climatic changes on the Earth. The influence of changes in climate on formation of mineral deposits and development of life on Earth was considered and presented based on modeling of typical climatic regimes. It shows that the anthropogenic effect on the Earth's global temperature is negligible in comparison with the effect of global forces of nature. * Presents the theory of Earth's evolution based on the laws of chemical-density differentiation of the origin of the Earth * Discusses the adiabatic theory of the greenhouse effect with quantitative estimates of the natural and anthropogenic influences on Earth's climates * Describes the quantitative description of the evolution of the Earth's climate throughout geologic history and prediction of the future of the Earth's climate * Investigates the global forces of nature driving the Earth's climate

From the book cover: Most politicians, bureaucrats, environmentalists, and members of the media believe as a proven fact that industrial activity - especially the emission of carbon dioxide - is affecting climate by causing an increase in average global temperatures. They also believe that something must be done immediately to address what is touted as our biggest global environmental threat. But, the scientific evidence is mixed and scientists continue to debate both the existence and the extent of human-induced global warming ... The doomsayers' version of climate change is being put forward as representing a "scientific consensus" while the views of scientists with valid criticisms of the global warming apocalypse are ignored. "Global Warming: The Science and the Politics" attempts to redress this imbalance by focusing attention on the fundamental scientific questions.
