In dit zesde Jaarboek Kasteel Keukenhof worden schatten uit de bibliotheek, het huisarchief en de kasteeltuin belicht. Dr. Peter van der Krogt, expert op het gebied van historische globes, brengt het paar Library Globes dat in 1851 te Londen door Charles Smith & Son werd vervaardigd, voor het voetlicht. Dr. Gerard Jaspers behandelt een aantal aspecten van De florum cultura, het rijk met gravures verluchte botanische handboek uit 1633 van de Romeinse jezuïet Giovanni Battista Ferrari. Een botanisch karakter heeft eveneens de fraai geïllustreerde bijdrage van C. Mesman, die zich daarin over de bijna vijftig verschillende paddenstoelen buigt die hij rond het kasteel aantrof. Het oudste stuk in het huisarchief is een document uit 1345. Hierin wordt de jurisdictie van het Betuwse Lyenden door de Utrechtse Paulusabdij verpacht aan hertog Reinald van Gelre. Tot de ondertekenaren behoorde een verre voorouder van de laatste bezitter van kasteel Keukenhof, graaf Carel van Lynden.

Aan de hand van zeventien brieven in het Keukenhofarchief die Hein van Lynden aan zijn moeder schreef, geeft Annechien Bertheux een beeld van de (mislukte) pogingen van dit 'zwarte schaap van de familie om op Java een suikerfabriek op te zetten. Bouwkundige aspecten komen aan de orde in bijdragen van restauratiearchitect Leo Wevers, die het interieur van het kasteel in oude glorie herstelde, en van Sylvette Terwindt, die de twee cassettenplafonds van de Haagse schilder Johan Stortenbeker (1821-1899) onder de loep neemt. Dit negende Jaarboek Kasteel Keukenhof belicht enkele aspecten van het cultureel erfgoed. Er zijn bijdragen over de historische behangsels in de salons, kamers en andere ruimten van het kasteel en over de evacuatievan de schilderijencollectie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog naar Museum De Lakenhal te Leiden. Merkwaardigerwijze duurde het tot 2016 alvorens een fraai schilderij van Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722) naar het kasteel terugkeerde. Voorts bevat dit Jaarboek een artikel over een dagboek van een tour die mogelijk Johan Steengracht maakte, de latere eigenaar van Keukenhof, in 1805 door Zwitserland. Het wordt bewaard in het huisarchief. De betovergrootvader van de laatste graaf schreef in een in de bibliotheek bewaarde statenbijbel een gezinskroniek, die in 1815 eindigt met de dood van zijn vrouw in het kraambed. Het Jaarboek bevat tevens een gedetailleerd verslag van de restauratie in 2017 van bouwdelen van de Hofboerderij uit 1643.

Sovereignty was a key issue in the baroque, and especially in the Dutch Republic with its incredibly complicated political organisation. Consequently, sovereignty was explored in and through Joost van den Vondel'S theatre plays. Vondel sensed a fundamental problem in the construction of Europe'S politico-cultural 'House'. The questions he asked with respect to that construction concerned the relationship between theology and politics, including in terms of gender and culture. Because these questions could barely be considered explicitly, let alone actually discussed, they had to be presented through literature theatre. A close reading of a number of plays reveals not only a pivotal discussion that concerns Vondel'S own times, but also an on-going struggle in the European exploration of sovereignty. In that context, power and potency a distinction made by Spinoza determine the status of sovereignty that any body can acquire.
