Der Name dieser Sammelhandschrift - das Glossar Salomons - leitet sich von den zwei lexikonartigen alphabetischen Glossaren ab, die dem Bischof Salomon III. von Konstanz (890-919/920) zugeschrieben werden. Daneben sind ein griechisch-lateinisches Wörterbuch und ein Glossar zum Alten und Neuen Testament enthalten. Die auf 1158 datierte Handschrift des Regensburger Benediktinerklosters Prüfening gehört zu den anspruchsvollsten und herausragendsten Werken des Konvents. Ihre Entstehung fällt in die Zeit des zweiten Prüfeninger Abtes Erbo (1121-1162), unter dessen Abbatiat das Kloster eine Blüte der Schriftstellerei erlebte. Auswahl und Zusammenstellung der Texte, die den Anspruch auf enzyklopädische Wissensbreite offenbaren, zeigen das hohe intellektuelle Niveau des Klosters. Die erst später, 1165, hinzugefügten Federzeichnungen stellen einen der Höhepunkte der romanischen Buchmalerei dar. Sie zeigen vor allem medizinische und anatomische Abbildungen. So veranschaulichen 22 Brennstellenbilder eine schon in der Antike praktizierte Methode, bei der Krankheiten und Wunden durch Brennen geheilt werden sollten. Neben weiteren naturwissenschaftlichen Abbildungen und allegorischen Laster- und Tugenddarstellungen ist die Handschrift vor allem für das prächtig gestaltete Schatzverzeichnis von Prüfening bekannt: in Form einer Urkunde gestaltet, werden darin die mit dem Kloster verbundenen Ordensmänner und Heiligen dargestellt. // Autor: Béatrice Hernad // Datum: 2016

This book examines the early development of the graphic arts from the perspectives of material things, human actors and immaterial representations while broadening the geographic field of inquiry to Central Europe and the British Isles and considering the reception of the prints on other continents. The role of human actors proves particularly prominent, i.e. the circumstances that informed creators’, producers’, owners’ and beholders’ motivations and responses. Certainly, such a complex relationship between things, people and images is not an exclusive feature of the pre-modern period’s print cultures. However, the rise of printmaking challenged some established rules in the arts and visual realms and thus provides a fruitful point of departure for further study of the development of the various functions and responses to printed images in the sixteenth century. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, print history, book history and European studies.
