The 5th edition of this successful Glossary has been completely revised, updated and supplemented by up-to-date terms used in genetic engineering and molecular genetics. Where necessary a short essay explaining an entry in more detail is added to the stated definition. Wherever possible, the author of an entry is mentioned and the respective publication cited. Cross references ease the orientation within the glossary. "This excellent textbook should serve seasoned scientists as a feast for the mind and as a valuable work for graduate students. It is a true bargain..."(Quarterly Review of Biology) "By the very fact that this Glossary is now in its fifth edition, one can be assured of its usefulness... Highly recommended." (Australasian)

The past two decades have witnessed a truly phenomenal growth and expansion in our knowledge of the principles and mechanisms of in heritance. :\iolecular and microbial genetics, for all purposes non-existent at the outset of this period, have developed and flourished to the extent of becoming major branches of genetics from which the most exciting and edifying concepts of gene function and structure have been derived. Similarly, man, heretofore a genetic curiosity, has become in his own right a genetic organism of first rank importance. It is, therefore, not without reason that accompanying the rapid proliferation of genetic knowledge, a parallel increase has occurred in the technical nomen clature and terminology special to the field of genetics and often special to specific branches of genetics. In preparing this glossary of ca. 2500 entries, we have attempted to compile and collate the terminology from seemingly unrelated, widely separated branches of genetics - classical and molecular; microbial and human; cytogenetics and population genetics. We have not been content merely to collect terms and definitions much as is found in a dictionary. Rather our aim has been to provide material suitable and usable both for students and research workers. Accordingly, depending upon our evaluation, some terms have simply been defined, others have been described at some length even to the extent of providing experi mental data.

In preparing the new completely revised edition of this glossary, which in the meantime has been translated into Russian and Polish, we have attempt ed to include the most important new terms and to revise the text in those cases where new data demanded it*. As a result about fifty percent of the text is completely rewritten. Once more we have tried to provide material suitable and usable both for students and research workers. Accordingly, depending upon our evaluation, some terms have been simply defined, others have been described at some length even to the extent of providing experi mental data. Wherever possible, synonymy and redundancy have been pointed out, and in the interest of historical accuracy the individual respon sible for introducing a particular term or concept listed with the specific paper included in the literature citations. Cross references between related terms are designated by an arrow (---*) before each relevant term. To keep the book, as far as possible, to a reasonable size the terms carried over from the earlier edition have once more been critically selected and, where necessary, revised. In spite of these efforts a certain increase in volume was unavoidable. We hope that the new edition will once more prove useful to a wide audience and enjoy the same cordial reception as the earlier ones. Comments and suggestions from the reviewers and users of the earlier editions have contribut ed signifiClllltly to the revision.

Glossary Of Biotechnology Terms written by Kimball Nill and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-12 with Medical categories.

As a result of biotechnology becoming such a highly prolific area, non-technical people, such as lobbyists, attorneys, marketing, and public relations people, have had to quickly become conversant about a topic that is highly technical. In addition, various specialists working in the field of biotechnology, including chemists, geneticists, and biologists, occasionally have difficulty in understanding the terms utilized by each other in their respective specialties. It is, therefore, necessary to have a book to which you can refer so everyone can clearly discuss the topics in biotechnology. This text provides concise definitions of terms for persons unfamiliar with biotechnology, and clarifies new terms and how they are being used for those who are already somewhat conversant in the area. The Glossary of Biotechnology Terms is a handy reference for people with little or no training in the biological and chemical sciences because it has been written in non-technical language and serves to bring you up to date on biotechnology terminology to provide for more effective communication. The definitions are written utilizing words that enable you to conceptualize the idea embodied in the term and explanations are based on analogy whenever possible. Written to assist those individuals who seek to gain an understanding of the terminology as it is currently used, the Glossary of Biotechnology Terms, Third Edition is compulsory for anyone involved in the biotechnology field or anyone who deals with professionals in biotechnology.

Dictionary Of Plant Breeding written by Rolf H. J. Schlegel and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-14 with Science categories.

Arguably one of the oldest scientific traditions, plant breeding began in Neolithic times, with methods as simple as saving the seeds of desirable plants and sowing them later. It was not until the re-encounter with Mendel’s discoveries thousands of years later that the genetic basis of breeding was understood. Developments since then have provided further insight into how genes acting alone, or in concert with other genes and the environment, result in a particular phenotype. From Abaxial to Zymogram, the Dictionary of Plant Breeding contains clear and useful definitions of the terms associated with plant breeding and related scientific/technological disciplines. This second edition of a bestseller defines jargon, provides helpful tables, examples, and breeding schemes, and includes a list of crop plants with salient details. Packed with data and organized to make that data easy to access, this revised and expanded reference provides comprehensive coverage of the latest discoveries in cytogenetics, molecular genetics, marker-assisted selection, experimental gene transfer, seed sciences, crop physiology, and genetically modified crops. A complex subject, plant breeding draws from many scientific and technological disciplines, often making it difficult to know the precise meanings of many terms and to accurately interpret specific concepts. Most dictionaries available are highly specific and fragmentary. As in the previous edition, this dictionary unifies concepts by including the specific terms of plant breeding and terms that are adjusted from other disciplines. Drawing on the author’s 30 years of experience, the dictionary provides an encyclopedic list of commonly used technical terms that reflect the latest developments in the field.
