At the age of 8, Chad Gibbs attended his first Southeastern Conference football game. Since then he has been in a constant battle to not let his love of all things pigskin consume him. As a Christian, Gibbs knows he cannot serve two masters, but at times his faith is overwhelmed by his fanaticism. He is not alone. In 2008 over six million people attended an SEC football game. They spend thousands on season tickets, donate millions to athletic departments, and for three months a year order their entire lives around the schedule of their favorite team. Gibbs and his six million friends do not live in a spiritually void land where such borderline idol worship would normally be accepted. They live in the American South, where according to the 2008 American Religious Identification Survey, 84 percent identify themselves as Christians. This apparent contradiction that Gibbs sees in his own life, and in millions of others, has led him to journey to each of the twelve schools to spend time with rabid, Christian fans of various ages and denominations. Through his journey he hopes to learn how others are able to balance their passion for their team with their devotion to God. And if Gibbs learns others are just as messed up as he is, at least he will know he is not alone.

Game Day And God written by Eric Bain-Selbo and has been published by Mercer University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Social Science categories.

Game Day and God: Football, Faith, and Politics in the American South takes seriously the often-stated assertion that college football in the South is a religion. To this end, Eric Bain-Selbo draws upon a wide range of theoretical approaches in religious studies and cultural criticism. He also relies upon field research on several campuses in the Southeastern Conference where he interviewed fans and experienced "game day." Consequently, the author is able to make the case that college football does function religiously for many people in the South. In addition, the author introduces key concepts and theories of religion and culture to a general audience Game Day and God also recounts the role that college football has played in Southern history and culture. Going back as far as the Civil War, the work explains the cultural meaning of college football in the South, delivering a much-needed critical perspective to the subject Scholars of religion will find the work a compelling extension of key concepts and theories to an otherwise "secular" activity. Scholars of American culture and sports will find the work to be an interesting case study, one that-unlike much work in the area-focuses our attention on the religious dimension of the phenomenon of sport in American culture. And general readers will find that college football or any sport can be much more than they imagined as well as discover important theories with which to make sense of the complexity of our daily lives Book jacket.

Men love the game of football because it mimics the eternal war perpetually existing between good and evil. This recondite battle is analogous to football because like human beings themselves, football is half a physical game and half a spiritual undertaking. Football is fierce in nature because tests the hearts of men via heathy competition while simultaneously offering a healthy means of catharsis for deep-seated masculine fervor and release of emotion put there by God. Football makes men better by reminding us of our mortality, because severe injuries and even deaths have resulted from partaking in the game. Being cognizant of this transience of life in turn instills a deep sense of awe and humility because the gift's brevity dawns on us. While playing football might not be able to source the evangelistic sprout of becoming a Christian, it can implant and nurture the seed of faith given to mankind in the anagogical nature of the Bible. The game of football has many parallels to the word of God, everyday life challenges that mature adult face, and aids in spiritual development while being an effective tool of discipleship. Has the spiritual effect of football on America's youth ever been researched in the short and long-term? It is my hope that this book carries both theoretical and practical implications for athletes, coaches and even more so to those entrusted with carrying out the calling of Jesus' great commission commandment.

In football, coaches must trust their players not to make the same mistake over and over again. However, God never gives up on us, no matter how many times we make mistakes or commit sins. Remember that sinning is different from a mistake. To sin against the law of God requires intent against the law of God and the original Ten Commandments that God gave Moses. The connection between religion and sports is everywhere in our culture. Athletes and fans alike are known for praising God for all success. But beyond these public displays of religion is a spiritual connection that exits between our faith and our favorite teams. God and Football: Why Men Love the Game takes an in-depth look at this connection to show the spiritual reasoning behind our passions for the game. Playing or watching the game of football is beneficial physically and spiritually. Real-time decisions made during a game simulate decisions that will be made later in life off the field. Yet risk is involved and attached to the activity. Injuries can and do occur during games, just as spiritual injuries occur in our daily lives. While football is a fierce game, it teaches us the importance of following the rules, embracing discipline, committing to a team, and trusting in a higher power. Football helps make men better by reminding us of our mortality as well as teaching us valuable life and spiritual lessons. Find out more about the connection between football and spirituality in God and Football: Why Men Love the Game.
