"How God Helps Those Who Help Themselves: The Sufficiency of Grace and the Responsibility of Effort" We all struggle. Some of us overcome; others are pulled under. Some of us find help; others have no idea where to turn. Perhaps the most painful, pain-filled aspect of our struggles is when we feel we are all alone, that no one understands, and we have no other options but to endure. In these darkened moments when troubling questions come faster than answers can satisfy, when we feel we have done all we can do, we search for spiritual meaning to make sense of life. An anchor in these times is the belief that God helps those who help themselves. Even non-religious people believe it to be true, and despite our flaws and frequent mistakes in life, we believe God ought to help us. After all, isn't that God's job? People frequently ask, "How do I get God to help me? I can't do this alone." Then comes the response, "You have to help yourself." And we hear that interminable, nagging question echo through our suffering, "Yes, but how?" So how do we help ourselves? How do we access this divine assistance, especially when we've made a mess of our lives and find ourselves in those dark corners of despair? In, "How God Helps Those Who Help Themselves," author, teacher and pastor, Grant Gillard shares a little-practiced concept of positioning, the solution to helping ourselves receive God's help. Believing, God helps those who help themselves, ennobles our belief in self-sufficiency and strongly suggests that if we are faithful to do our part, we can count on God to do his part. God's help does not come without conditions, however. God does not honor the slothful or the foolish person. God helps those who sincerely desire, and are willing to help themselves. God helps those who have initiative and take responsibility for their actions, even when they mess up and fail big-time. Even for the non-religious person, our culture holds a perception that God is good, that God ought to help us in our struggles, and we hope God will. Likewise, we feel God should reward us for our hard work, or bless our good efforts, as imperfect as they may be. But how do we persuade our loving God to jump in and give us a hand? Is there something we can do to persuade God to help us? The answer is, "Yes," and it's called positioning. Americans pride themselves on their self-sufficiency and the high ideals of their work ethic. Yet we struggle to attain the level of success that satisfies our material need and secures our financial future. We all need a little divine assistance to enhance our efforts. Culturally, we believe in a benevolent God who empowers us to succeed and allows us to bask in the results of our hard work. Our fallen world is constantly burdened by sin and ignorant efforts by well-intentioned people, but thanks to God's unfailing love, our world is unceasingly solicited by grace. There is always hope because there is always help. Irrespective of their religious persuasion, almost everyone accepts the secular proverb, "God helps those who help themselves." Surveys show 80% of evangelical Christians incorrectly believe it to originate from the Bible. Even the nominally religious are able to quote it without chapter and verse. One of the unique contributions of this manuscript is how the author takes a secular proverb, and with an extensive public acceptance, explains it through the applications of stories and illustrations from the Bible. Though written from a Christian perspective, it appeals to the nominal believer as well as the faithful follower. The material makes us want to be better, more productive people, and demonstrates how God blesses us when we follow his ideals for our lives.

"Where does poverty come from? What am I supposed to do about it?" These questions are driving a new generation of Christians to take action on behalf of the poor through social and political action, global partnerships, and financial generosity, as they desire to become the generation that ends poverty forever. But in pursuit of this goal, they risk losing sight of a fundamental reality: the root cause of poverty isn't found in material or external circumstances. The root cause of poverty is sin--and sin is not a problem we can solve. But Jesus can. In Awaiting a Savior, Aaron Armstrong reminds readers that even as we are responsible for pursuing biblical solutions to poverty, our hope for truly resolving it comes not from the good we do, but from the return of Christ, who will once and for all put an end to sin, suffering and death as he brings about the new creation.

Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart written by J. D. Greear and has been published by B&H Publishing Group this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-01 with Religion categories.

“If there were a Guinness Book of World Records entry for ‘amount of times having prayed the sinner’s prayer,’ I’m pretty sure I’d be a top contender,” says pastor and author J. D. Greear. He struggled for many years to gain an assurance of salvation and eventually learned he was not alone. “Lack of assurance” is epidemic among evangelical Christians. In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of present- ing the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of “asking Jesus into your heart” or “giving your life to Jesus” often gives false assurance to those who are not saved—and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives. He also answers the tough questions about assurance: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation? Such issues are handled with respect to the theological rigors they require, but Greear never loses his pastoral sensitivity or a communication technique that makes this message teachable to a wide audience from teens to adults.

Your Best Life Now written by Joel Osteen and has been published by FaithWords this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-05 with Religion categories.

Live boldly and act on your most powerful beliefs with this life-changing guide to faith, positive thinking, and spiritual fulfillment. Pastor Joel Osteen asks everyone to examine what he or she really believes. Why is this important? Because we will become what we believe. Our beliefs will prove either a barrier or vehicle as we strive to go higher, rise above our obstacles, and to live in health, abundance, and victory. In Your Best Life Now, Osteen says, "I am what I am today because of what I believed about myself yesterday. And I will be tomorrow what I'm believing about myself right now. God sees us as more than conquerors, able to fulfill our destiny. We need to see ourselves through the eyes of our Creator." He says that our self-image should mirror exactly what God says about us, not what we feel or think. And he encourages readers to be people of faith, for if you can see the invisible, God will do the impossible.

A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
