An incisive look at how evangelical Christians shaped—and were shaped by—the American criminal justice system. America incarcerates on a massive scale. Despite recent reforms, the United States locks up large numbers of people—disproportionately poor and nonwhite—for long periods and offers little opportunity for restoration. Aaron Griffith reveals a key component in the origins of American mass incarceration: evangelical Christianity. Evangelicals in the postwar era made crime concern a major religious issue and found new platforms for shaping public life through punitive politics. Religious leaders like Billy Graham and David Wilkerson mobilized fears of lawbreaking and concern for offenders to sharpen appeals for Christian conversion, setting the stage for evangelicals who began advocating tough-on-crime politics in the 1960s. Building on religious campaigns for public safety earlier in the twentieth century, some preachers and politicians pushed for “law and order,” urging support for harsh sentences and expanded policing. Other evangelicals saw crime as a missionary opportunity, launching innovative ministries that reshaped the practice of religion in prisons. From the 1980s on, evangelicals were instrumental in popularizing criminal justice reform, making it a central cause in the compassionate conservative movement. At every stage in their work, evangelicals framed their efforts as colorblind, which only masked racial inequality in incarceration and delayed real change. Today evangelicals play an ambiguous role in reform, pressing for reduced imprisonment while backing law-and-order politicians. God’s Law and Order shows that we cannot understand the criminal justice system without accounting for evangelicalism’s impact on its historical development.

Truly, we are in the age of lawlessness - lawlessness implies a lack of order. In the Scriptures, God has always placed great emphasis on His Law and Order. The Law has always been represented by the number 10, and Order the number 12 [Government]. Where God's laws, truths and order are disregarded, treated with contempt and even ignored, then lawlessness will set in to cause destruction. The devil has after all tried for thousands of years for mankind to exchange God's truth for a pseudo "truth" and "reality" (Romans 1), urging and prompting the citizens of the earth to follow their own moral compass that only points to a direction of apostasy, lawlessness and disorder. This is demonstrated by 2000 years of wars, conflict, bloodbaths, moral corruption, tyranny and the relentless drive to see mankind exalt the "Self" above the will of God. God is a God of order. This is the reality. He is not a lawless God. Still today we run the risk of stepping out of God's order and becoming lawless ourselves because of our misconceptions of, for example, the Law of Moses. Indeed, we may not be under the Law, but even before the Law in the days of Moses, God has always been a God of Law and Order. And despite being under the New Covenant, His Law and Order still exists. This volume of work explores, therefore, the themes of law and order, based on Scripture.

Law and Order offers a valuable new study of the political and social history of the 1960s. It presents a sophisticated account of how the issues of street crime and civil unrest enhanced the popularity of conservatives, eroded the credibility of liberals, and transformed the landscape of American politics. Ultimately, the legacy of law and order was a political world in which the grand ambitions of the Great Society gave way to grim expectations. In the mid-1960s, amid a pervasive sense that American society was coming apart at the seams, a new issue known as law and order emerged at the forefront of national politics. First introduced by Barry Goldwater in his ill-fated run for president in 1964, it eventually punished Lyndon Johnson and the Democrats and propelled Richard Nixon and the Republicans to the White House in 1968. In this thought-provoking study, Michael Flamm examines how conservatives successfully blamed liberals for the rapid rise in street crime and then skillfully used law and order to link the understandable fears of white voters to growing unease about changing moral values, the civil rights movement, urban disorder, and antiwar protests. Flamm documents how conservatives constructed a persuasive message that argued that the civil rights movement had contributed to racial unrest and the Great Society had rewarded rather than punished the perpetrators of violence. The president should, conservatives also contended, promote respect for law and order and contempt for those who violated it, regardless of cause. Liberals, Flamm argues, were by contrast unable to craft a compelling message for anxious voters. Instead, liberals either ignored the crime crisis, claimed that law and order was a racist ruse, or maintained that social programs would solve the "root causes" of civil disorder, which by 1968 seemed increasingly unlikely and contributed to a loss of faith in the ability of the government to do what it was above all sworn to do-protect personal security and private property.

In recent years, the body of Christian believers have been exposed to a teaching on grace that seems to be producing generation that is increasingly taking on the ways of the world and its present culture. We understand and believe that we are saved by grace and not by works, but a radical and imbalance teaching on the subject of "grace" has caused so many believers to become comfortable living their Christian lives saturated with worldly compromise. We hear great preaching and teaching on the goodness of God, but we need to take heed to what is written in Romans 11:22 where says, "Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." The purpose of this book is to explore questions that have been raised concerning the teaching on radical grace. This book will attempt to reveal scriptures that will bring a balanced teaching to the subject of grace so that the body of Christ will understand that grace is more than God's unmerited favor. Grace also empowers and equips the saints to live righteously and godly in this present world.

The Majesty of God’s Law is a study of the history and development of the only system of law which was revealed by God, himself. That is why it is called “God’s Law.” The Psalmist described the supreme excellence of God’s law when he said: “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalms 19:7-8) The entire code of God’s law is carefully enunciated in the five chapters of this book. Under this judicial system there are only about a hundred statutes required to govern a community, state, a nation, and the world. But this is only possible when these laws are in the hands of the wise and virtuous judges. In order to make the system work, the people must be taught the law and then they must enter into a solemn covenant to honor and sustain the precepts. When Moses gave this law to the ancient Israelites, he said it could make them most peaceful, prosperous and powerful people in the World. However it was revealed to Moses that the people of the age would violate its precepts. He then learned that it would not be until the latter days that this law would be lived the way it was originally designed. The American Founding Fathers picked up on that promise because it appeared to them that it would be in this choice land where this great promise would one day be fulfilled. Nevertheless, they recognized that the Constitution was the indispensable foundation for such an inspired system of prosperity, justice, and peace. When they saw the Constitution would gradually unravel, they knew that this character of liberty would have to be restored in all its pristine power by some future generation. And they knew this would have to occur before God’s law could be inaugurated. Someday, God’s law is coming to America. It could come rapidly after a period of cleansing and reform, even in our day. And since Moses said it would eventually transpire, there needs to be a generation of Americans trained and motivated to put it into effect. Dr. Skousen has prepared this present study in hopes that it might be of assistance.
