Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. His purpose will be served if the volume helps them in the way of remembrance, and more than served if, through God's blessing, it shall prove of any use beyond their circle. Most of the Sermons, though not all, have been preached, and the exception is referred to in order to account for some of them exceeding the limits which are ordinarily assigned to spoken discourse. The sub jects have not been selected with any attempt at unity in the illustration of Christian doctrine or duty. An effort has rather been made to secure a variety of topics. When human knowledge and life are Spreading out into ever wider circuits, the Christian ministry must seek to show itself a debtor to men of every class and char acter, and must endeavor to prove that there is no de partment of thought or action which cannot be touched by that Gospel which is the manifold wisdom of God. The more we study the way of God's commandments, the more shall we find it as broad as his other works, and increasingly rich to meet all the developments of human nature. The first thing that calls for our attention is the commendation of humility. You will observe, however, that humility is not set forth here as the sole condition of the heavenly estate. It is a condition an indispensable condition; but there is nothing in the Saviour's words limiting the entire range of Christian character to this one quality. We are to humble ourselves as little children; we are to come to that spirit and condition which childhood symbolizes; but having humbled ourselves into that condition, there is more than one quality of true heavenly greatness. And yet, my hearers, if we take this genuine spiritual greatness as the end of our being, how true it is that, in one phase or another, humility and we may say humility alone - does lie at its base, and is its secret fountain. That we may arrive at the conviction of this truth, let us for a few moments con sider what humility is not. In the first place, humility is not a weak and timid quality. It must be carefully distinguished from a groveling spirit. There is such a thing as an honest pride and self respect. We should think something of our humanity, and not cast it under men's feet. The God-sentiment, feeling the existence of God, has probably been common, in greater or less degree of crudity and grossness among all peoples. And all have agreed at least in this that each has clothed his idol in his own human attributes; and their gods are cruel, vengeful, jealous, dishonest, or loving, bene heent, forgiving and fatherly, after the modelof their own natures. Some, however, have denied the existence of God 5 but it is the God of others they deny, while themselves deify Nature, or Law, or even Chance. But the God-sentiment toward the great controlling and unifying Harmony of the universe remains, even with them who have expelled God from their reason. The existence of God, then, IS assumed, and is admitted to be in the nature of things as incapable of proof as is that of the universe. Berkeley, and many other philosophers before him and since, and many of them in a more absolute manner than he, have denied the existence of matter 3 but whether objectively in itself or subjectively in ourselves only, matter exists to all men. Let it be only in the foci of forces, or existent in substantial atoms, men will continue to believe in its existence though they continue to dispute as to its essence.
