Ever since Jesus’s proclamation in word and deed as the Great Physician, his followers in mission have assumed that salvation and health are intertwined. Yet for every age, Christians need to examine how they can best announce the gospel message of God’s healing in word and deed in their own context. In our era, we are often simultaneously grateful for modern medicine and frustrated by its inability to care for the whole person in effective, affordable ways. In this edited volume, authors with an interest in health missions from a wide variety of experiences and disciplines examine health and healing through the theological lens of shalom. This word, often translated “peace,” names a much more complex understanding of human well-being as right relationships with one another, with God, and with creation. Reading various aspects of healthcare missions through these glasses not only yields much-needed correctives to current practice but also exposes the Spirit’s invitation to participate in God’s ongoing work of tending, caring, and healing our broken world.

It's amazing how God can use us when we surrender our lives to the Lord. As a young girl on a farm in Michigan, Mary Broeckert prayed, "Thank you, Lord, for what You have done. Please guide my life to accomplish whatever You desire with it, for Your glory." And with her surrender, the Lord took her on a journey of a lifetime. Present and Powerful: A Testimony of God's Working in Medical Missions by Mary Broeckert, M.D. is a compelling book which tells the author's inspiring story of serving the Lord as an overseas missionary doctor. Throughout her years of service, God led Dr. Mary, her husband, and her children to the Sahara Desert, to a mission hospital in Central African Republic, where for many years she was the only doctor in a large region, and to Cambodia. Through her experiences, readers see God's faithfulness in the author's life in distant places, in medical work in resource poor settings, and in the variety of ways God worked to bring people to Himself. Including memories of the author's childhood days, journals and letters written at the time of the actual events, plus pictures showing her life and work in each place, the book is organized chronologically from 1953 to 2017. From continent to continent and country to country, including a creative access country for four years, God guided her steps throughout life and then directed her to write this book for His glory. Now retired in the USA, Dr. Mary's heart passionately desires that God's people would joyfully entrust their lives to God's faithful hands and know His presence and power as He takes them anywhere He chooses. Come along on the journey and witness how God can move in the life of a willing heart.

Remote villages in Africa and Asia, a war-refugee village in Guatemala, war-ravaged muddy Sudan, squatters camps in South Africa, slums in India, rugged country in Bangladesh, a tsunami-torn community in Sri Lanka, sweltering in Vietnam, inside a jail in Laos, pulling teeth in a prison in Uganda, under a tree in Cambodia, and in a bamboo gazebo in Thailand—following Jesus is never boring. God’s compassion compels us to go to the poor and needy all over the world. Dr. Helen Laib made a commitment to follow Jesus into medical missions at age sixteen. This didn’t come into reality until thirty years later with her first medical mission to Vietnam. Helen is the founder and president of Circle of Love Foundation, a medical mission organization based in Rockford, Illinois. Helen has organized and led over 110 short-term medical trips to seventeen countries, serving over 112,000 people and resulting in 30,000 people making commitments to also follow Jesus. Helen has compiled her trip reports so that others can see how faithful God has been in every situation. He makes all things work out for good.

What is our preconception about Muslims? Do we continue to practice medical missions in a way that is no longer considered an effective means of presenting the gospel to the unreached? Is our gospel message biblically balanced and firmly contextualized in the context that we try to serve? There are numerous questions that we may ask ourselves when we desire to share God's love with people who are still alienated from it. Christian cross-cultural missions should reconsider the strategies and attitudes that no longer reflect biblical principles. This book brings a lot of insightful thoughts and suggestions from the author's medical ministry experience in the Arab world to those who want to reach out to the unreached. The theology of shalom enables us to deeply understand God's ultimate purpose toward the world that he created and to devote our lives to bring people to his kingdom in the humble way that Jesus has presented throughout his life on earth when he was with us. This book demonstrates how Christian medical missions can be manifested in a more biblical way and can serve people who have been physically injured and emotionally broken more effectively.

Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) is a beautiful country with amazing people. I first went there during my senior year of medical school and spent three months at two mission hospitals. My wife Marilyn and I have always been interested in international mission service. After completion of my residency at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, we moved to Mashoko Christian Hospital in Zimbabwe where I became medical superintendent. Our daughters are Christine (Christy) age 2 and Julia who was 4 months. This was an amazing and memorable time in our lives. Unfortunately a war between the white, colonial government remnant after the British left and the black African population was heating up. This eventually affected our ministry and led to an earlier than planned departure. I returned to the United States and began my nearly 30-year career in Emergency Medicine at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. My original partners had all served in Rhodesia as mission doctors. My call to medical missions continued, as I have been a part of 47 short-term medical mission outreaches mostly as team leader. Serving in this manner has been so fulfilling as I have seen God working around the world. My desire is that those who read this book will be inspired to serve and use whatever talent they have to honor God.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... FROM CANDIDATE TO MISSIONARY I. The Call Carlyle has said, "Blessed is the man that hath found his work. Let him ask no other blessedness." The call to a life work on the foreign field--what constitutes it? This question is perplexing the minds of a large number of earnest men and women in colleges, universities, theological seminaries and medical schools. It is sheer mockery for any student to look for an answer to the question who does not genuinely purpose to live a life of the largest possible usefulness. But where that purpose directs the question, any honest seeker may learn whether or not he is "called" to missionary service. What are the factors in such a call? The need constitutes one factor in the call. It is the first thing that impresses a man who studies the condition of the non-Christian world. It is the first impression, the most lasting and the most urgent. One cannot escape the appalling fact that millions of his fellow beings are sick unto death, without medicine, without surgery, without hospitals, without doctors, without nurses, and, in addition, are deprived of the gospel of good cheer. The desire to meet the need is a second factor in the call. The impulse is God-given. To realize the need of suffering humanity is but to create an insistent desire, in the heart of every true Christian, to relieve that need. To do less is to be lacking in a sense of gratitude to God, and to be untrue to the obligation to give our fellow men what we have ourselves received. The judgment of those who know the candidate best, his qualification and disqualification, together with the demands of the field and of the service to be rendered--all enter into the final decision. A personal commitment to the will of God is the most important...

Trends and skills for those who offer pastoral care Christian pastoral care has changed a great deal in the past few decades in response to many factors in our rapidly changing world. In part 1 of Nurturing Hope, Lynne Baab discusses seven trends in pastoral care--shifts in who delivers pastoral care, the attitudes and commitments that undergird pastoral care, and societal trends that are shaping pastoral care today. She illustrates them with stories from diverse congregations where Christian caregivers are meeting those challenges in creative and exciting ways. In the second half of the book, Baab presents four practical, doable, energizing skills needed by pastoral carers in our time. Focusing on skills that help carers nurture connections between everyday life and Christian faith, she explores the need for carers to understand common stressors, listen, pray with others, and nurture their personal resilience. Grounded in an understanding of God as the true caregiver and healer, the author offers tips for readers who are training other pastoral carers or developing their own understanding and skills. Each chapter ends with discussion and reflection questions, making the book helpful for groups. Lynne Baab brings readers hope for their caring role and for their own spiritual journey.
