Gabriel offers a startling new look at Judaism and Christianity by attempting to trace their historical theological roots, not to the revelations of God, but to the common theological ancestor, the religions of ancient Egypt. Using new material only recently made available by archaeology, Gabriel shows how the theological premises of Christianity were in existence three thousand years before Christ and how the heresy of Akhenaten became the source for Moses' Judaism. Gabriel begins with the challenge that the dawn of man's ethical conscience began in Egypt by 3400 BCE, long before the age of revelation in the West. Over the course of 3000 years, Egyptian theologians developed a complete theology of trinitarian monotheism, immortality of the soul, resurrection, and a post-mortem judgment within the Osiris myth. These concepts existed nowhere else in the ancient world and were passed directly to Christianity. In 1200 BCE, the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten abandoned Egyptian tradition and invented his own theology of a single god, no immortal soul, no resurrection, and no post-mortem judgment. This tradition was passed to the West through Moses whose Judaic theology is identical to Akhenaten's.

The history of post-patristic Western theology displays two fundamental understandings of God: God as immutable Being, God as Becoming Being. Hidden behind them are the principle of analogy and the principle of being. Western philosophers and theologians are not always aware that they have been thinking with these philosophical categories inherited from Plato and Aristotle. We have chosen Anselm, Aquinas, Meister Eckhart, Luther, Locke, and Schelling to exemplify this argument. The Fathers employed Greek philosophy as a tool of discernment, not a vehicle of discovery. They alone have remained faithful to scriptures that explained their conception of God. They not only recognized Him as beyond all being (and therefore, beyond all knowledge and analogy) but with St Paul distinguish between the divine Essence and Its Uncreated Energiesaunknown to the post-patristic Westaa theology belonging to both the Greek and Latin Fathers. The theology of the Fathers is unique.

Does it really matter what the Founding Fathers believed? Would the discovery of their true beliefs alter the way we think of America? The men and women whom we refer to as the Founders began an unprecedented journey to form and build a new way of life, a new government, and a new country. Determined to establish a free republic founded on principles of liberty, democracy, and reverence for the God who gave them life and liberty, they forged one nation united in a common belief that each citizen could determine their own destiny and that each voice could speak without fear of their religious convictions. In The God of Our Fathers, we see that America was founded upon the principles of their believing, a conviction which will stand through the ages. Their voices, from the pages of history, tell us in their own words that the America they envisioned was truly one nation under God.

Protestantism today has an idolatry problem. Not merely in the sense of worshipping false gods-of pleasure, wealth, or politics-but in the sense of worshipping the Triune God of Scripture according to images and ideas of our own devising. Whether it's a God who suffers and changes alongside his creatures, or a "Trinitarian circle dance" of divine personalities, or a hierarchically-arranged Trinity that serves as a blueprint for gender relations, modern evangelical theology has strayed far from historic Christian orthodoxy. Needing a God that can be put on a greeting card or in a praise song, our idolatrous hearts shrink the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob down to size, and make him more like us. Amidst this scramble to make God more relevant, we seem to have forgotten that the only God truly capable of saving us is a God who is radically other and transcendent, far above our imaginings. This incomprehensible God is not the God of the philosophers, as modern revisionists frequently charge, but the God of the Bible. The essays in this volume, written by scholars and pastors deeply concerned for the life of the church, seek to retrieve and defend the tradition of classical theism as the historic Protestant faith, rooted in Scripture, philosophically coherent, and still relevant to the needs of the church today.

Susie Doheny, an Irish Catholic, and Peder Holm, a Norwegian Lutheran, fall in love and marry in South Dakota in the 1890s. Soon their marriage is tested by drought, depression, and family bickering. Susie believes they are being tested by their fathers' God. Peder blames Susie for the timidity of her beliefs; Susie fears Peder's pride and skepticism. When political antagonism grows between the Norwegian and Irish immigrant communities, it threatens to split their marriage. Against a backdrop of hard times, crisscrossed by Populists, antimonopolists, and schemers, R”lvaag brings the struggle of immigrants into the twentieth century. In Giants in the Earth the Holm family strained to wrest a homestead from the land. In Peder Victorious the American-born children searched for a new national identity, often defying the traditions their parents fought to uphold. In Their Fathers' God, R”lvaag's most soul-searching novel, the first-generation americans enter a world of ruthless competition in the midst of scarcity. The University of Nebraska Press also publishes Peder Victorious and Paul Reigstad's R”lvaag: His Life and Art.
