Large state temples in ancient Egypt were vast agricultural estates, with interests in mining, trading, and other economic activities. The temple itself served as the mansion or palace of the deity to whom the estate belonged, and much of the ritual in temples was devoted to offering a representative sample of goods to the gods. After ritual performances, produce was paid as wages to priests and temple staff and presented as offerings to private mortuary establishments. This redistribution became a daily ritual in which many basic necessities of life for elite Egyptians were produced. This book evaluates the influence of common temple rituals not only on the day to day lives of ancient Egyptians, but also on their special events, economics, and politics. Author Katherine Eaton argues that a study of these daily rites ought to be the first step in analyzing the structure of more complex societal processes.

"This dissertation presents the first comprehensive study of communal religion in urban China based on fieldwork conducted in and around Xiamen city, a Special Economic Zone in Fujian province in the southeast of the country. The project analyzes the modern historic development in the city in relation to temples and urban infrastructure and considers the ways in which contemporary ritual events and temple organizing influence city life through different forms of spatial organization and bodily sensation. It shows the complex interaction between urban temple devotees, Daoist priests, Buddhist monastics, opera performers, and a variety of other religious performers who circulate throughout the region. Despite the destructive role urban development had on temples throughout the twentieth century, in the past thirty years the reconstruction of temples has allowed neighborhoods to organize development projects and charitable works throughout the city that would otherwise not have existed. These projects are closely connected to the perception of a god’s spiritual efficacy and the experience of ritual events, which I analyze in terms of the collective affective atmospheres, individual emotional experiences, and conscious perceptions in order to present ritual as a productive social force. Rather than suggesting a decline in religious practice due to urban development and the increasing role of global capital in everyday life, I argue that rituals, as bodily and largely communal practices, hold affective capacities that have the potential to influence how people act, think, and live in the city"--

The rituals and practices for these deities are neither scripted nor canonized, but what they may lack in grandeur, erudition and ceremony, they more than make up in the faith and feeling that they generate. In a civilisation which has encountered majestic truths and erected grand temples, these sacred manifestations and expressions of the ordinary people tend to be sidelined or dismissed by scholars as well as the world at large, as minor or lesser gods worthy of curiosity but not of serious study, but it is important to remember that they have a beauty and presence of their own in the pluralistic Indian tradition.

The study by Kerstin Schier examines the big annual festival (mahotsava) at the Ekamranatha temple in the South Indian town Kanchipuram, which - among other things - dramatises the divine marriage between god Siva (as Ekamranatha) and the goddess, generally considered to be Kamaksi. In the course of the festival's rituals gods and goddesses, temples, and religious traditions relate to each other in many ways. These complex and multifaceted relations are studied by taking into account different types of historical and contemporary sources, and by combining textual analysis with the observation and study of ritual performances, interviews, and oral narratives. The book provides a detailed description and analysis of the divine marriage's contemporary ritual practice and its associated myth in Sanskrit and Tamil texts. It also takes into consideration the different views and interpretations of members of local communities, temple priests, donors, and other participants, which leads to a multiplicity of perspectives on the festival. This volume deals with temple ritual texts from ancient Mesopotamia, in particular from the cities Uruk and Babylon. Key question is whether they are a reliable source of information on the cult practices in Uruk and Babylon during the Hellenistic period. In the book an extensive description is presented of the festivals, rituals, ceremonies and offerings in Hellenistic Mesopotamia. The appendix consists of a selection of the most important temple ritual texts, which are presented in transliteration, translation and with philological comments. Four plates with so far unpublished text fragments are also included. The evidence clearly shows how important the public cults were in Hellenistic times, at least until the first century B.C., and how active the Mesopotamians were in matters of religion and cult during this period.
