Godunov-type schemes appear as good candidates for the next generation of commercial modelling software packages, the capability of which to handle discontinuous solution will be a basic requirement. It is in the interest of practising engineers and developers to be familiar with the specific features of discontinuous wave propagation problems and to be aware of the possibilities offered by Godunov-type schemes for their solution. This book aims to present the principles of such schemes in a way that is easily understandable to practising engineers. The features of hyperbolic conservation laws and their solutions are presented in the first two chapters. The principles of Godunov-type schemes are outlined in a third chapter. Chapters 4 and 5 cover the application of the original Godunov scheme to scalar laws and to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws respectively. Chapter 6 is devoted to higher-order schemes in one dimension of space. The design of such a scheme is described for the general case and applied to some well-known schemes such as the MUSCL and PPM schemes. Chapter 7 focuses on multidimensional problems. The classical alternate directions and finite volume approaches are presented together with the wave splitting technique that is described in depth with an application to two-dimensional systems. Chapter 8 deals with large-time step algorithms. These include front tracking-based methods, explicit-implicit techniques and the time-line interpolation technique. Three appendices provide notions on accuracy and stability issues, Riemann solvers and the user instructions for the computational codes provided in the enclosed CD-ROM.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Com bustion, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). It was held on October 12-14, 1992, and was the sec ond workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Major Research Topics in Combustion," edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, and R. G. Voigt. The focus of the second workshop was directed towards the development, analysis, and application of basic models in high speed propulsion of particular interest to NASA. The exploration of a dual approach combining asymptotic and numerical methods for the analysis of the models was particularly encouraged. The objectives of this workshop were i) the genesis of models that would capture or reflect the basic pllysical phenomena in SCRAMJETs and/or oblique detonation-wave engines (ODWE), and ii) the stimulation of a greater interaction between NASA exper imental research community and the academic community. The lead paper by D. Bushnell on the status and issues of high speed propulsion relevant to both the SCRAMJET and the ODWE parallels his keynote address which set the stage of the workshop. Following the lead paper were five technical sessions with titles and chairs: Experiments (C. Rogers), Reacting Free Shear Layers (C. E. Grosch), Detonations (A. K. Kapila), Ignition and Struc ture (J. Buckmaster), and Unsteady Behaviour ('1'. L. Jackson).

One of the major achievements in computational fluid dynamics has been the development of numerical methods for simulating compressible flows, combining higher-order accuracy in smooth regions with a sharp, oscillation-free representation of embedded shocks methods and now known as "high-resolution schemes". Together with introductions from the editors written from the modern vantage point this volume collects in one place many of the most significant papers in the development of high-resolution schemes as occured at ICASE.

This book is a liber amicorum to Professor Sergei Konstantinovich Godunov and gathers contributions by renowned scientists in honor of his 90th birthday. The contributions address those fields that Professor Godunov is most famous for: differential and difference equations, partial differential equations, equations of mathematical physics, mathematical modeling, difference schemes, advanced computational methods for hyperbolic equations, computational methods for linear algebra, and mathematical problems in continuum mechanics.

This edited review book on Godunov methods contains 97 articles, all of which were presented at the international conference on Godunov Methods: Theory and Applications, held at Oxford in October 1999, to commemo rate the 70th birthday of the Russian mathematician Sergei K. Godunov. The meeting enjoyed the participation of 140 scientists from 20 countries; one of the participants commented: everyone is here, meaning that virtu ally everybody who had made a significant contribution to the general area of numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, along the lines first proposed by Godunov in the fifties, was present at the meeting. Sadly, there were important absentees, who due to personal circumstance could not at tend this very exciting gathering. The central theme o{ the meeting, and of this book, was numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws fol lowing Godunov's key ideas contained in his celebrated paper of 1959. But Godunov's contributions to science are not restricted to Godunov's method.

During the last decade enormous progress has been achieved in the field of computational fluid dynamics. This became possible by the development of robust and high-order accurate numerical algorithms as well as the construc tion of enhanced computer hardware, e. g. , parallel and vector architectures, workstation clusters. All these improvements allow the numerical simulation of real world problems arising for instance in automotive and aviation indus try. Nowadays numerical simulations may be considered as an indispensable tool in the design of engineering devices complementing or avoiding expen sive experiments. In order to obtain qualitatively as well as quantitatively reliable results the complexity of the applications continuously increases due to the demand of resolving more details of the real world configuration as well as taking better physical models into account, e. g. , turbulence, real gas or aeroelasticity. Although the speed and memory of computer hardware are currently doubled approximately every 18 months according to Moore's law, this will not be sufficient to cope with the increasing complexity required by uniform discretizations. The future task will be to optimize the utilization of the available re sources. Therefore new numerical algorithms have to be developed with a computational complexity that can be termed nearly optimal in the sense that storage and computational expense remain proportional to the "inher ent complexity" (a term that will be made clearer later) problem. This leads to adaptive concepts which correspond in a natural way to unstructured grids.

Numerical Approximation Of Hyperbolic Systems Of Conservation Laws written by Edwige Godlewski and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with Mathematics categories.
This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.
