Summary: Assendelft was een van de vroegste veenontginningen in Holland. Er zijn resten van een kerkbuurtje uit circa 950 teruggevonden. Tot in de zeventiende eeuw bestond onderscheid tussen een tiental boerenfamilies met de status van edellieden ('goede luiden') en de andere dorpelingen ('gemene onderzaten'). Bert Koene toont aan dat deze eeuwenlange tweedeling en andere opvallende gebruiken teruggingen op de manier waarop de ontginning ooit was aangepakt. Koene volgt de ontwikkelingen in de dorpssamenleving tot de watersnood van 1717. Assendelft behield zijn middeleeuwse karakter tot de komst van een Spaanse garnizoen in de eerste jaren van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Dankzij het rijke bronnenmateriaal is de schildering van het laatmiddeleeuwse dorpsleven gestoffeerd met personages en anekdotes. In de Gouden Eeuw werden de Assendelver boeren zo rijk dat zij veel land in de Beemster opkochten. Het was ook een tijd van spectaculaire weddenschappen, messentrekkerij en grootscheepse goederensmokkel.

The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.

Pioneers of Capitalism examines the formal and informal institutions in the Netherlands that made this economic miracle possible, providing a groundbreaking new history of the emergence and early development of capitalism. Drawing on the latest quantitative theories in economic research, Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden show how Dutch cities, corporations, guilds, commons, and other private and semipublic organizations provided safeguards for market transactions in the state’s absence. Informal institutions developed in the Netherlands long before the state created public safeguards for economic activity. Prak and van Zanden argue that, in the Netherlands itself, capitalism emerged within a robust civil society that constrained and counterbalanced its centrifugal forces, but that an unrestrained capitalism ruled in the overseas territories. Rather than collapsing under unrestricted greed, the Dutch economy flourished, but prosperity at home came at the price of slavery and other dire consequences for people outside Europe. Koopman Claas Caeskoper in Koog aan de Zaan begon in 1669 als achttienjarige een dagjournaal bij te houden. Hij hield dat zestig jaar lang vol, tot tien dagen voor zijn dood. Het journaal bevat een schat aan aantekeningen over het dagelijkse leven in de Zaanstreek en bovendien schreef Caeskoper met graagte over zijn avontuurlijke ondernemingen, zoals tripjes naar het oorlogstoneel in het Rampjaar 1672 en schaatstochten, waaronder een van bijna 300 km. Over zijn bezigheden als koopman schreef hij minder, maar daarover bleek veel te achterhalen in de nagelaten papieren van zijn broer Gerrit. De combinatie van deze familiedocumenten met ander eigentijds materiaal heeft een levendig portret opgeleverd van een familie in het hart van de Zaanse bedrijvigheid in de Gouden Eeuw. De negotie van Claas Caeskoper is later uitgebouwd tot het levensmiddelenconcern Honig. Ook die toedracht wordt in het boek verhaald.
