Doch betrachtet man in diesem Fall die Herkunft des Sprechers, eines Spaniers, ändert sich der Fall. Denn die Schicksale der deutschen und der spanischen Literatur entwickelten sich bis zum 18. Jahrhundert in grundverschiedene Richtungen und verhinderten jeglichen Austausch zwischen den beiden europäischen Ländern. Als Goethe im Jahre 1749 geboren wurde, waren die Literaturen weiter als je voneinander entfernt. Spanien als Weltmacht hatte um 1800 das goldene Zeitalter der Literatur längst hinter sich. Deutschland wurde mit Goethe zu seiner kulturellen Blütezeit und einem neuen Zeitalter geführt. Eine starr orthodoxe Tradition in Spanien stand einem neuen frei wissenden Geist in Deutschland gegenüber. Im Folgenden werde ich versuchen, die Wirkung Goethes in der spanischen Welt des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts nachzuzeichnen. Hat sich trotz dieses Gegensatzes ein Austausch zwischen der iberischen Halbinsel und dem Dichterfürsten entwickelt? Wie entstand und verlief diese Begegnung? Welche Hindernisse waren zu überwinden? Welche Umstände trugen förderlich zu einem literarischen und kulturellen Austausch bei? Ich werde zu Beginn kurz den Einfluss Spaniens und spanischer Literatur auf Goethe schildern. Danach werde ich eine Perspektive vom spanischen Leben und Denken aus einnehmen und die literarischen, geistesgeschichtlichen und soziologischen Verhältnisse in der spanischen Welt stets im Auge behalten. Um den Verlauf der hindernissreichen Entwicklung verständlich zu machen, werde ich mit der notwendigen Darstellung der kulturellen und literarischen Verhältnisse in Spanien im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert fortfahren. Anschließend soll das Werk Goethes und seine Wirkung beziehungsweise Rezeption in der spanischen Welt betrachtet werden. Zum Ende soll auf die Gesamtgestalt Goethes als Dichter, Denker und Forscher in Spanien hingewiesen werden. Die hispano-amerikanische Goethe- Rezeption werde ich an dieser Stelle nicht speziell anführen. Dies würde den Rahmen dieser Hausarbeit bei weitem überschreiten. Es werden aber ab und an auch hispano-amerikanische Literaturwissenschaftler zitiert, so dass das Bild in diesem Sinne eine gewisse Vollständigkeit erhält. Weiterhin findet man zahlreiche Übersetzungen und Studien über den wohl größten deutschen Dichter. Eine Würdigung oder gar eine Zusammenfassung über seine Arbeit und seine Bedeutung für die hispanische Welt sucht man jedoch vergeblich. Umso interessanter erschien mir deshalb die Frage, was Goethe und insbesondere der Faust für eine Bedeutung in der spanischen Welt gehabt haben bzw. noch haben. Denn schließlich stellte Goethe nach E. JIMENEZ CABALLERO "für das europäisch gesinnte, romantische Spanien, das nach 1898 heraufgekommen ist...die Aufklärung, den Weltbürger, den Menschen, den Humanisten, den Polygraphen, Wissenschaftler, Dichter, Romancier, Dramatiker, Botaniker, Maler und Physiologen."(1932) dar. Ob diese Aussage auf die gesamte spanische Welt zutraf und vor allem ab wann sie allgemeine Gültigkeit in Anspruch nehmen durfte, soll in der folgenden Hausarbeit untersucht werden. Besonderes Augenmerk soll bei der Betrachtung auf Goethes Faust gelegt werden. Zugleich soll die Frage Heinrich Heines, weshalb die Legende von Johannes Faustus einen so geheimnisvollen Reiz für die Zeitgenossen ausgeübt hat, auf die hispanische Welt ausgeweitet werden. Waren sie vielleicht ebenso fasziniert von dem "so naiv und fasslich" dargestellten Kampf im Faust, den sie selber gerade kämpften, "den modernen Kampf zwischen Religion und Wissenschaft, zwischen Autorität und Vernunft, zwischen Glauben und Denken"? In November 2002, an international conference was held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London in order to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Hermann Hesse’s birth.
