Basta leggere che i versi giovanili di Rimbaud sono minati da «negligenza e goffaggine»; che per penetrare la grandezza di Tolstoj bisogna procedere oltre «quella cocciutaggine nel voler salvare la propria anima e se ne avanza l’altrui»; che l’«Innominabile» di Beckett, se può sembrare eccezionale ai profani, rischia di far «sorridere familiarmente lo psichiatra»; bastano insomma queste poche sequenze di apparente irriverenza blasfema per capire che non siamo di fronte a un critico di routine o a un cauto professore. Ci troviamo, infatti, in quella particolare regione della geografia letteraria composta dagli articoli di Tommaso Landolfi: quella regione, cioè, in cui lo scrittore più elusivo e idiosincratico del nostro Novecento rivela l’altra faccia del proprio «understatement» – nella radicalità tipica di chi si ostina a credere, dietro la maschera dell’ironia, «che la letteratura sia una cosa seria». È in nome di una acuta tensione conoscitiva e non solo per puro spirito di provocazione che questi veri microsaggi procedono spesso contromano rispetto alle quiete certezze della vulgata. Ma Landolfi è illuminante anche laddove la sua analisi non produca ribaltamenti eversivi: come nei casi di Van Gogh, di Proust o del Gogol’ a Roma che dà il titolo alla raccolta, «perenne forestiero» la cui estraneità di viaggiatore allude a una più vasta estraneità esistenziale. O come quando si concede fulminei scarti dai massimi sistemi – regalandoci così riflessioni spregiudicate e antiaccademiche sulla filologia di un’edizione, sulla traduzione, sui limiti di ogni teoria della letteratura – e aperture a temi extraletterari quali la metafisica della roulette e il caos deterministico, la civiltà cibernetica e l’intelligenza degli animali. «Non siamo del parere che tutto sia ammissibile in letteratura, e che questa possa essere il campo dei più capotici esperimenti; al contrario, ci sembra che alcune cose siano alla letteratura peculiari quanto necessarie, per non dir altro l’espressione, e non già appena (seppure) l’esigenza di essa. La letteratura, per esempio, non può avere la funzione di acquaio delle angosce, vere o false; le quali se mai (persin ci vergognamo di doversi riferire a una nozione tanto elementare) hanno da essere perfettamente dominate prima di passare sulla pagina. E, per dirla in breve, noi ci ostiniamo a credere, magari a ritroso degli anni e dei fati, che la letteratura sia una cosa seria». «Gogol’ a Roma» raduna testi usciti sul «Mondo» fra il novembre 1953 e il marzo 1958.
