Scientist (Dr.) Henschel has jumped out of the Rat Race of an excellently paid, secure job. Just like this! From one day to the next, without any social safety net and fully comprehensive insurance, which is so much being loved by the Germans. To flare out his Free Fall in an increasingly uncertain society, his ‘personal parachute' is a kayak into the sunset. This adventure brings him in 91 days from the German northern Flensburg to the top end of the Baltic Sea, the Arctic Circle. Due to the aversion of the past years, his personal 'purification ritual' is to live only on nature, to 'get rid of the accumulated dirt', as he says himself, so was the plan. This expedition will be an outdoor paddle experience living from the land on the brink of sheer survival. His book on edible wild plants, which describes his diet on the voyage, immediately became a bestseller in Germany. (This accumulated knowledge over decades, he has now summarized in an Outdoor & Survival non-fiction book ‘SAVE YOUR ASS! No matter how!' in German only. His adventures together with his cohabitant Katrin can be seen on his YouTube Channel 1life4outdoor) The original idea of the kayaking expedition was to do the entire Baltic Sea and live solely off the fat of the land like a ‘budding Viking’ – a pure minimalist Thoreau life. He dubbed the project ‘Shin-ken Sho-bu' as a nod to his first year in Japan: ‘Doing things with deadly seriousness', which, as it turned out, couldn’t have been more apt: halfway through the trip, a cross-eyed motorboat captain ended up crushing him against the wall in a Swedish lock. The resulting bone splinters and cervical spine syndrome kept him side-lined for a year before he could eventually resume the expedition. Detlev had to rethink his original plan. After all, dreams meet reality out at sea and there is an adventure lurking around every corner! Loneliness, hunger, self-doubt and the monotony of paddling were his constant companions on the ninety-one-day voyage, not to mention the pain of sitting for hours on end, the torments of the unpredictable Baltic Sea, the icy Northern European weather and his frequent lack of energy, even for the cozy nightly campfire. Especially in our fast-moving, jaded times, Detlev’s ironic, self-critical and frank account and the descriptions of his bare-knuckle experiences make for a riveting read – not only for paddlers but also anyone who is fed up with life and the daily grind, still has dreams and might like to see them materialize one day. Detlev has been on a number of unusual expeditions since and coined his ‘RoNin doc’ philosophy: ‘Applied Philosophy – Requiem'.

Kayak Adventure In Siberia written by Dr. Detlev Henschel and has been published by Dr. Detlev Henschel this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Sports & Recreation categories.

This eBook is a narrative about a 1,250-mile long solo kayak adventure on the 1-mile deep Lake Baikal in East Siberia, Russia. The clash of different cultures (Russians, Evenks, Buryats) and the wonders of a not always safe unique and pristine nature with hungry bugging bears, extreme climate, ‘Russian improvisation' pushed this experience to the limit for man and equipment. (The adventures can be seen on his YouTube Channel 1life4outdoor.) Not everyone dares to realize a life off the beaten track in an increasingly uncertain world and to actually fulfill ones dreams. Henschel is one who has been practicing this for tens of years without fear – ‘well almost, to know what exists beyond the horizon before the Grim Reaper comes,' as he says himself. He is able to implement his minimalist plans into great and brilliant adventures. In this special case: 62 days alone in a kayak on the eastern Siberian Lake Baikal. This deepest lake in the world (1,642 m) is located north of Mongolia with a coastline of 2,000 kilometers and is not necessarily a safe area due to its inhabitants and wildlife. The clash of different cultures, the complications that come with it, such as constant encounters with hungry bears, the Russian mafia and the natives like Evenks and Buryats made it a real ordeal 24/7 for him. But the unique landscape, his discovery of the ‘soul' of the Baikal, which is called ‘Fountain of the Earth' by the natives together with the physical sensation of his surroundings 'while sliding around the lake with my butt on its surface' was the reward: Henschel tells of it – self-critical, honest, ironic and awesome to his environment. Once started, reading this book fascinates, it wakes you longing to realize your own dreams and see this fascinating part of the earth with your own eyes.

A mixed team of a safari owner, an Africa Greenhorn and two Bushmen take a hike in an isolated mountain massif in the Namib Desert, Namibia, Africa. The trail there and beyond by rough off-road terrain and the time around the campfire is spiced up by African stories of the last 12 years of safaris. This reading has nothing to do with a soft-washed farm holiday far away from African reality! Safari owner and tour guide (Doc) Henschel is planning a trekking expedition on the Brandberg, Namibia, Africa with his friend and absolute outdoor newbie Stefan ‘BeeTwo' as well as two Damara Bushmen friends Collin ‘!Uiseb' and 'Jonny B Good'. The isolated and 600 square kilometers and 2500 meters high Brandberg massif is located in the middle of the oldest desert in the world (80 million years), the Namib. This safari through little-used off-road tracks to the 'mountain' and beyond is spiced up by stories of the past 12 years Namibia. Henschel introduces the reader to another world where usual stereotypes and perceptions are inapplicable. In Namibia, many tribes live with their own cultures and languages, including the 'whites' who, of course, see themselves as Africans. Namibia is desert land, but with 6,000 different plant species it has three times more than Germany and one third of the USA. In addition, Namibia has the entire spectrum of African game, which ‘runs around freely there', everywhere! Namibia has ancient deserts, sparse Savannah and dense jungles. It is a land where adventures are born. This reading has nothing in common with a soft-washed 5-star-African-farm-holiday far from the all-day African reality! 58 colored pictures

Edible Wild Plants written by Dr. Henschel and has been published by Dr. Detlev Henschel this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Nature categories.

Edible Wild Plants Mother Nature’s Delicacies – Eat or Die! A bestseller about edible wild plants The second book by scientist and adventurer Dr. Detlev Henschel is about edible wild plants, which might just save your life if you get into trouble – hence the subtitle: Eat or Die! Henschel's first bestseller was inspired by his 2,500-kilometre (1,500-mile) solo kayak expedition on the Baltic Sea to the Arctic Circle, where he had to make do with what he could find along the way. In the wake of the decline in quality veggies etc. self-picked wild plants have become popular for everyday salads or even as delicacies from nature among nature lovers, hikers, foodies and outdoor fanatics, not to mention ambitious amateur chefs in the comfort of their own kitchens, too. In addition to the 136 most important edible plants, over 300 species are listed in this book and depicted in more than 360 Leica-quality color images. Moreover, the plants’ botanical characteristics are described to avoid any mix-ups with inedible (or poisonous) relatives. Where, how and when to collect the plants is explained and presented in a table to make them easier to find in nature and this eBook. Extensive information on the ingredients and the nutritional and homeopathic effects of each plant complement over 600 stomach-filling recipes (emergency rations) for hungry outdoor enthusiasts, while ambitious amateur chefs will find more than one hundred sometimes age-old gourmet recipes to try out at home ('Meals with history'). And as the book also includes amusing anecdotes and stories about the myths and folklore behind every single plant, the 600-page eBook also makes for a fascinating read in its own right.

Reflecting the profound changes in international society in the past decade and the challenges that all Powers’ diplomacy and statecraft face, whether opposing or encouraging these changes, this fully revised and updated edition provides a unique multifaceted assessment by experts of the new international order. Built around the thesis that Great Power rivalry dominated after the end of the Cold War, it examines how this multi-polarity has become more extreme. The Handbook assesses the diplomacy and statecraft of individual powers in seven key sections: • The Context of Diplomacy • The Great Powers • Middle Powers • Developing Powers • International Organisations and Military Alliances • The International Economy • Issues of Conflict and Co-operation It shows how diplomacy and statecraft have transformed on issues such as the evolving "America First" strategy; the strengthening of the People’s Republic of China; the growth of non-state actors in foreign policy; the unravelling of international arms control agreements; the aggressive nature of Russian foreign policy; and the emergence of major armed conflicts and the rise of terrorism and armed insurgencies around the world. It will be of interest to government and non-governmental actors, established scholars and students in the fields of international relations, history, and military studies.

Beautiful, secluded anchorages, picturesque canals, bustling marinas, dramatic cities - all await those considering a Baltic cruise. The nine countries bordering the Baltic Sea offer an immense variety of cruising grounds, people and cultures. There are thousands of harbours and innumerable anchorages, and it would take an entire bookshelf, to cover them all in detail. The information contained in this book has therefore been chosen for its value both at the planning stages - preparing the yacht, choosing the most suitable route, timing and communications etc - and again on arrival, when a general overview of each individual country is followed by specific harbour information. Where detailed cruising information is readily available - effectively Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland - only selected harbours are covered, chosen, with a few exceptions, as fulfilling certain key needs. Where cruising information is more limited - Poland, Kaliningrad, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia - many smaller harbours are also featured in detail. In addition to comprehensive suggestions for further reading (and sources in each country from which they may be ordered) more than 200 websites are listed, again chosen for their relevance both at the planning stages and en route. Details of internet access points are included for most major harbours. This 4th edition (2017) has been produced by a team from the Royal Cruising Club and contains substantial changes. Apart from the routine updating of the text and plans - many newly drawn for this edition - and the addition of new photos, there are also some major changes. In particular coverage of Finland has been reorganized, and reflecting the fast pace of change since the last edition, the Baltic States and Poland sections have been improved significantly.
