We all know what happened in the Viet Nam War, either from living during it, serving there, or reading about it. We all know it was a defeat for our forces, and a waste of many young lives and much money. But do we ever stop to think that there are thousands of old vets who are unsatisfied about how the war was mishandled and have been fighting it for forty odd years in their minds? What if all these old men got together and decided to do something about it? What if they traded in their rocking chairs for the discomfort of the jungle once again and attempted to right old wrongs? In this book you meet Bill and his friends and follow them on their late in life adventure. You meet the sultry Grace who steals Bill's heart one moonlit night in Bangkok, and leaves Bill with a choice. The woman of a lifetime, or misadventures in the jungle? Can the old soldier have both? Can he and his friends accomplish their long dreamed of goals, or will things go wrong and everything go bad?

This book is autobiography, "GOING TO SEE THE ELEPHANT." It tells about my brothers'' and my experiences, as young boys, living on the farm in Idaho. The turmoil, we experienced living in an Alcoholic- dysfunctional family. It explains about my working experiences in Idaho Falls, Idaho, after we moved from the farm, during the last two years of the Second World War. It describes the circumstance that prompted our divorced Father to go to Alaska. The book includes our experiences when we drove to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada with our intent of taking a ship to Haines, Alaska. The primary part of this book is about the experiences we had, during the time, when our Father and us three boys drove the Alcan Highway also known as The Alaska-Canadian Highway in 1946. It explains the problems that our Father encountered in getting permission from the Canadian government, in Edmonton, Alberta for us to drive the Alcan Highway. This was the first year that civilians could drive the Alcan Highway since it''s completion in 1942. The highway was in the same condition as when it was originally constructed by the American and Canadian Soldiers. This book depicts the experiences we had when we first arrive in Anchorage, Alaska, and how we survived the extreme cold weather in Anchorage, and about our living in a crude state of existence in our Quanset Hut, which had no indoor water, plumbing, or electricity. Our only source for heat and cooking was a wood-burning stove. As for having shelter in the Quonset hut, we might as well have been living in an Igloo.

"The phrase ’seeing the elephant’ symbolized for ’49 gold rushers the exotic, the mythical, the once-in-a-lifetime adventure, unequaled anywhere else but in the journey to the promised land of fortune: California. Most western myths . . . generally depict an exclusively male gold rush. Levy’s book debunks that myth. Here a variety of women travel, work, and write their way across the pages of western migrant history."-Choice "One of the best and most comprehensive accounts of gold rush life to date"ˆ–San Francisco Chronicle

Young Izzie wishes he could join the Union Army with his brothers, Ario and Cal. He wonders what it would be like to "see the elephant"—soldier talk for going into battle for the first time. But it seems the closest Izzie will ever get to battle is visiting wounded soldiers at a Washington, D.C., hospital, where his aunt works as an Army nurse. When Izzie meets a wounded Rebel soldier who will soon be sent to prison, he realizes that the war may not be as simple as he once believed, and "seeing the elephant" takes on a whole new meaning. Based on family history, Pat Hughes's beautifully crafted story is complemented by Ken Stark's exceptional watercolor paintings. Seeing the Elephant is a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.
