In this book, the author describes his climbing adventures prior to his solo mountaineering days. He began with mountains in Ecuador guided by American Alpine Institute, culminating in a climb of the highest peak in the country, Chimborazo (20,564 feet), in 1989. Because of its height and its proximity to the Equator, it is the highest mountain on Earth when measured from sea level and closest to the Sun when measured from the Earth's core. The next year, he went to Bolivia with the same company and climbed peaks there, the most notable, Illimani (21,122 feet). In 1991, he journeyed to Argentina to attempt the highest mountain in the Andes, Aconcagua (22,841 feet), by the difficult Polish Glacier Direct route, once more with AAI. After that expedition, he felt he had the skills to try things on his own, and he tells of certain of those climbs in his, "Clawing for the Stars. A Solo Climber in the Highest Andes".

INTRODUCED BY ADAM WEYMOUTH, award-winning author of The Kings of Yukon 'A wonderful book -- and a highly original contribution to the literature of travel' PAUL THEROUX 'The Mississippi. Mighty, muddy, dangerous, rebellious and yet a strong, fathering kind of river. The river captured my imagination when I was young and has never let go.' Mississippi Solo tells the story of one man's voyage by canoe down the Mississippi River from its source in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico - a longtime dream, and a journey of over 2,000 miles through the heart of America. Paddling into the Southern states - going from 'where there ain't no black folks to where they still don't like us much' - Eddy is confronted by the legacy of slavery and modern racism, including an incident with a pair of shotgun-toting bigots. There are also the dangers of passing barges, wild dogs roaming the wooded shore, and navigating a waterway that grows vaster, and more hazardous, every day. But Eddy also encounters immense human kindness, friendship and hospitality, as well as coming to know the majestic power - and the awesome dangers - of the river itself. Mississippi Solo is an unforgettable American adventure.

"It is not what you know, but who you know that counts." This old cliche is as true today as it was when it was first uttered. According to a recent survey conducted by Drake Beam Morin, Inc. (a large outplacement organization), networking fills 70 percent of professional positions. Networking for a job is the best way to tap into the unpublished job market. NETLIVING 101, Networking Life's Journey reaches beyond the job market into all aspects of life from the womb to the tomb. Hence the word networking is replaced by my newly coined word netliving . There is currently no book, as indicated by reviewing Books in Print ,that shows people how to take advantage of networking techniques used in job hunting to enhance other facets of their lives. NETLIVING 101, Networking Life's Journey fills that gap by providing all the tools and information readers need to establish networks and have more enjoyable and successful lives. One of the reasons for choosing the title NETLIVING 101, Networking Life's Journey was because, to the best of my knowledge, no college or university offers a course as part of a curriculum on the subject. In earlier, simpler times when most of the world's population lived in small villages where everyone knew their neighbor, there was no need to build networks for they were already in place. The local church or pub was usually the hub of the network. With the complexity of today's society it has become necessary to make a concerted effort to establish support networks in order to be successful and happy. In this self-help book, ideas, examples and suggestions for netliving are developed through short vignettes based on the lives of real people. Names and places will be changed to protect the innocent. NETLIVING 101, Networking Life's Journey is written using the concept known as faction. Essentially, faction refers to the inclusion of certain details which, although they may not have occurred exactly as described in point of fact, give the reader a clear image of the scene in his or her imagination. Rather than telling the reader what netliving is all about, this book demonstrates through the words and actions of the characters. Chapter One introduces the two key characters that appear throughout the book. Roberta and Richard are used alternately, from chapter to chapter, to provide different perspectives. The fabric of friendships is woven through the stages of life and applied to various life experiences from overcoming the fear of public speaking to preparing for retirement. Netliving 101, Networking Life's Journey is designed for individuals who are career oriented, sophisticated, and thoughtful. Most people are concerned about their future and are taking steps to afford themselves successful, happy and prosperous "mature years."

Due North is a collection of travel observations, reflections, and snapshots across colors, cultures, and continents by award-winning travel writer and photographer Lola Akinmade Åkerström. EXCERPT: I know what's coming. I'd gone through this drill dozens of times. As many times as each of those vibrant and colorful visas in my little green book, my Nigerian passport. Even before the immigration officer pulls me aside, I instinctively pull myself aside. He glosses over my visa. A visa I've spent hundreds of dollars acquiring. He finds his government's issued permission, but curiosity gets the better of him. He thumbs through the rest, looking through the two green passports stapled together because the visas had outnumbered the pages. "Why all these visas?" he asks. This scene was repeated in airport after airport across several continents. The more visa stamps in my passport, the more my motives for travel were deeply questioned. Why was I traveling?

The Ride written by Stanley Israel and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-13 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Written by an avid bicyclist, this book tells the story of a man who celebrated his 59th birthday by bicycling alone from Berkeley, California to New Jersey. Whether a bicycle racer, commuter, tourist or occasional rider, young or old, the author’s adventures while seeing the American countryside and meetings with interesting folk on the way will appeal to anyone who has ever pedaled a kiddy-car, tricycle or bicycle. The author learned many things, one of which is not to dive into Lake Tahoe, the story of the Winnemucca people, the location of the largest potato patch in the world and how to bicycle safely across the 120-miles of salt flats between Wendover, Nevada and Salt Lake City, Utah. His ride took him through the town through which “The Old Mill Stream” of song passes and Ottumwa, Iowa, the home town of Radar O’Reilly of Mash fame. The route crossed all the major North-South rivers and the high passes of the Rocky Mountains. If you have ever pedaled a two-wheeler, you will enjoy this book.

Solo written by Jenny Tough and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

'Jenny Tough writes with the same talent, imagination, and sheer courage that she displays in her athletic endeavours. This book will broaden the horizons of all who venture between its covers.' - Emily Chappell, author of Where There's a Will 'I love that SOLO is part-self help and part adventure story. Jenny shows us all that the journey to self-belief comes with just as many ups and downs as the mountains she traverses and that, with a little trust in ourselves (and a few good cups of coffee) the next seemingly insurmountable pass is never beyond our reach.' - Anna McNuff, author of Bedtime Adventure Stories for Grown Ups Jenny Tough is an endurance athlete who's best known for running and cycling in some of world's most challenging events - achieving accolades that are an inspiration to outdoor adventurers everywhere. But SOLO tells the story of a much more personal project: Jenny's quest to come to terms with feelings and emotions that were holding her back. Like runners at any level, she knew already that running made her feel better, and like so many of us, she knew that completing goals independently was empowering, too. So she set herself an audacious objective: to run - solo, unsupported, on her own - across mountain ranges on six continents, starting with one of the most remote locations on Earth in Kyrgystan. SOLO chronicles Jenny's journey every step of the way across the Tien Shan (Asia), the High Atlas (Africa), the Bolivian Andes (South America), the Southern Alps (Oceania), the Canadian Rockies (North America) and the Transylvanian Alps (Europe), as she learns lessons in self-esteem, resilience, bravery and so much more. What Jenny's story tells us most of all is that setting out to do things solo - whether the ambitious or the everyday - can be invigorating, encouraging and joyful. And her call to action to find strength, confidence and self-belief in everything we do will inspire and motivate.

Escape Route written by John Parker and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

What is an escape route? An escape route is essential if you want to stay scot-free and not end up in prison or worse. This is a story about myself and the many tight spots I have got myself into and how I managed to escape scot-free. Indeed I am a Scot and know the origin and meaning of the expression. So I have always known to make sure that I had an escape route to prevent me from ending up in the quicksand. In the course of this book, I intend to give you my outlook on life, how I've spent it and my opinions on many subjects. The vast majority of this book is true and the few exaggerations I have included for a laugh, you will be able to spot, but there are very few. I will not be caring if I offend anyone nor will I be politically correct in any way. If you are easily offended, don't read it. I was born in the sixties, so my sense of humour came into being in the seventies when things weren't quite so politically correct as they are now. Those were the days when Warren Mitchell's character Alf Garnett was the biggest comedy star on the television, so the sense of humour in this book will not be to everyone's taste. But if you enjoy a good laugh . . . read on.
